Bemutatkozás: Why bedbugs don't bite everyone in the family: myths and reality The appearance of bedbugs in an apartment is often accompanied by a strange phenomenon: one person wakes up with red spots on their skin, while another sleeps nearby and notices no traces. This creates the illusion of selectivity. Many believe that the pests prefer a certain blood type or avoid smokers. In reality, the situation is more complex. To understand the causes and call professionals for treatment, study the information on the disinfection website, which describes professional pest control methods. Understanding bedbug biology will help you spot the problem early and avoid wasting time testing pseudoscientific theories. Hidden Response and Physiology Bedbugs bite everyone within their reach. The main reason for the myth of "invisible" bites lies in the individual human body's response. Bedbug saliva contains a complex cocktail of proteins, anesthetics, and anticoagulants. An anesthetic numbs the puncture site to prevent the victim from waking up, and an anticoagulant prevents blood clotting. The body reacts to these substances as if they were allergens. In 30-40% of people, the immune system does not mount a significant response to bedbug enzymes. In this case, the skin does not experience itching, swelling, or redness. The person is technically "bitten," but there are no outward signs of damage. Skin also plays a role in the visibility of bites. People with thin skin and closely spaced capillaries experience a faster and more pronounced reaction. Thick skin can conceal traces of microscopic punctures. With age, epidermal sensitivity often decreases, so older people are less likely to notice the presence of insects than children or adolescents with delicate skin. This creates a dangerous situation: the bedbug population grows because people fail to take measures to eradicate them, believing the house is uninhabited. Sensitivity threshold is also important. Some people wake up at the slightest movement on their skin, while others sleep deeply and don't feel the parasites moving. Bedbugs are nocturnal creatures, and their peak activity occurs between 3 and 7 a.m. If a person is sound asleep during this time, they may not notice the feeding process. The absence of itching the next morning only confirms the absence of an allergic reaction, not the absence of the insects themselves. Two people can sleep in the same bed, but one will be covered in blisters, while the other will be completely untouched. Factors that influence the visibility of bites: The state of the immune system and susceptibility to allergic reactions. The thickness of the epidermis and the depth of blood vessels. Taking antihistamines or anti-inflammatory medications, which suppress symptoms. The stage of the insect's development (larval bites are usually less painful and leave fewer marks). Biological mechanisms for finding prey Bed bugs find food not by the taste of blood, but by thermal radiation and carbon dioxide. Every human breath releases a burst of CO2 into the air, which serves as a beacon for the insects. The heavier a person is, the more carbon dioxide they emit and the more heat their body produces. This makes large adults more attractive targets from a technical standpoint. However, in the cramped confines of a city apartment, bed bugs spread to all available sleeping areas, focusing on the shortest distance to a feeding source. The common belief that bed bugs prefer blood types A or B and ignore those with A is not supported by scientific data. Experiments show that, when left to their own devices, bed bugs successfully feed on blood of any type. Blood type does not affect reproduction or population survival. The parasites value the presence of hemoglobin, not the antigens that determine blood type. Bed bugs are primitive predators whose goal is to quickly gorge themselves and return to shelter. They don't taste food or choose their prey based on dietary preferences. The location of the bed relative to the nest also creates the illusion of selectivity. Bedbugs try to nest as close as possible to the food source: in the seams of the mattress, behind the headboard, in the cracks of the baseboards. If one family member sleeps on the sofa under which the nest is located, they will be bitten first and most severely. The parasites are lazy and won't crawl to another room as long as there is a readily available source nearby. If the population is small, it can concentrate in only one area, making it seem as if they are "eating" only one person. Myths about the protective properties of odors and habits People often seek refuge in folk remedies and household habits. There is a myth that bedbugs don't bother smokers because of the smell of nicotine in their blood. In fact, the concentration of nicotine in plasma is too low to repel the insects. The smell of tobacco on the skin is also no barrier to a hungry parasite. The same applies to alcohol: drinking dilates blood vessels, which can actually make it easier for the insect to seek blood, rather than the opposite. Spices, garlic, or specific medications do not change the composition of sweat enough to act as a repellent to bedbugs. Another misconception concerns perfumes and hygiene products. Bedbugs are not deterred by the strong odors of deodorants, shampoos, or laundry detergent. Although some essential oils (lavender, wormwood, tea tree) can temporarily disorient the insects, they do not provide reliable protection. The parasite will overcome the unpleasant odor barrier if it is hungry. Using strong fragrances often harms the residents themselves, causing headaches, but does not solve the problem of an apartment infestation. What is really important to know about bedbug behavior: They can survive without food for up to several months, entering a state of suspended animation at low temperatures. Insects move through ventilation shafts, electrical outlets, and the exterior walls of a house, migrating from neighboring homes. Bedbugs do not live on humans, unlike lice; they only come to feed and immediately retreat to a shelter. A female bedbug lays up to five eggs daily, leading to exponential population growth. Home hygiene only indirectly affects the occurrence of bed bugs. Pests can infest a perfectly clean apartment by bringing in new furniture, luggage after a trip, or on guests' clothing. A tidy home helps detect traces of activity more quickly: black spots (feces) on bedding, empty chitinous shells after molting, or drops of blood on sheets. A clear, clutter-free home deprives insects of convenient breeding grounds, but does not guarantee their absence. Why it's important to act immediately If only one person in the family is bitten, this doesn't mean the problem will resolve itself. Ignoring the situation allows the insects to reproduce unchecked. Within 2-3 months, the number of insects will increase hundreds of times, and they will begin to explore new territories: armchairs, chairs, and clothes in closets. Constant attacks by parasites lead to psychological exhaustion, insomnia, and increased allergic reactions. In children, multiple bites can trigger iron deficiency anemia. Homemade control using household aerosols is often ineffective. Most store-bought products only act by contact--they kill only those bedbugs that come into contact with the liquid. Bedbug eggs are protected by a tough shell, which is unaffected by insecticides. Professional treatment involves the use of residual-action products and specialized equipment (cold or hot fog) that delivers the active ingredient into the deepest crevices. To check your apartment for bedbugs, try a simple test. Make your bed with white sheets and set your alarm for 4 a.m. Turn on the light abruptly and inspect the sheets. Even if you don't feel any bites, the presence of small insects or blood stains will confirm an infestation. Don't wait until bedbugs start biting everyone in the family--a lack of reaction in your partner is simply a quirk of their immune system, not a sign that the property is safe. Calling an exterminator promptly will save you money on new furniture, which often has to be thrown out in the event of a severe infestation.
