Rugby Union: Laporte Facing Irb Charge
Published: 6/11/2007

Bernard Laporte faces being reported to the IRB after allegedly threatening referee Stuart Dickinson after France's 42-11 defeat to New Zealand.

France coach Bernard Laporte could face suspension if found guilty of misconduct after an alleged verbal spat with Australian referee Stuart Dickinson last week.

International Rugby Board (IRB) referees' chief Paddy O'Brien told reporters in Wellington that Dickinson's report into the incident in a hotel foyer had been received and would be assessed by the IRB and the French federation.

Laporte allegedly confronted Dickinson, telling him that the French team would boycott any matches he was put in charge of at this year's World Cup, before adding, "You do this tomorrow and you will be finished". Under the IRB's code of conduct, players and officials can face stiff penalties if they are found to have threatened, abused or intimidated referees or touch judges, whether the incident happens on or off the field.

Laporte apologises to Dickinson

French rugby coach Bernard Laporte has written to Australian referee Stuart Dickinson apologising for his verbal attack in a Wellington hotel foyer last month, The Dominion Post newspaper reported today.

Dickinson said Laporte had written to him -- in French -- after the incident on the eve of France's second test against the All Blacks in Wellington on June 9. Dickinson laughed the incident off "I've had the letter partly translated, and he has apologised, which is fine."
