Like the oil industry, Canada's natural gas industry is based primarily in the province of Alberta, which in recent years has accounted for nearly 70% of the country's natural gas output. Some analysts, however, forecast little growth potential for natural gas in Alberta, as well as for the entire Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). Consequently, some companies have shifted their focus to newer projects in British Columbia, Atlantic Canada and the Arctic, as well as to new sources, such as imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coalbed methane.

Alberta conventional natural gas production peaked in 2001: study

CALGARY (CP) - Conventional natural gas production in Alberta likely peaked three years ago and a yearly decline of about 2.5 per cent should be expected, the province's energy regulator said Thursday in its annual reserves report.
The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board said while a total of 12,000 gas wells were drilled in the province last year - a 46 per cent increase over 2002 drilling - production declined by two per cent. And while the expected record number of wells drilled this year should keep production flat, convention gas will begin declining in 2005 by about 2.5 per cent.

"New pools are smaller and new wells drilled today are exhibiting lower initial production rates and steeper decline rates," the report states.

Alberta földgáztermelése 2001-ben érte el a csúcsot,jelenleg évi 2,5%-os esésben van,remélik hogy a furásokba ölt pénzekkel sikerül az idei évre szinten tartani a termelést.
