Debreceni reptér:

The airbase of the city of Debrecen ( Hungary) was one of the largest Soviet bomber bases in the state. It housed one complete regiment of tactical bombers and an independent EW helicopter squadron. After the wall came down in 1989, the Soviets left the base on 18 May 1990. The base is no longer used as a military installation, now the owner of the establishment is the city, and it serves as a regional international commercial airfield, the site for general aviation, charter flights, sport aviation, agricultural and rescue flights.

The history of Debrecen airbase is older, than the Soviet presence. The first part of the airfield was built in 1930-1931 for general aviation and transport purpose. However, the suppressed assigment was the support of the hidden Hungarian air force during the period of the constriction of the Trianon peace contract of 1920. After the abort of this restrictions, in 1939, the airfield became the home for the 6. reconnaissance and 3. tactical bomber squadrons of the Hungarian air force. These Hungarian units from the Debrecen airbase were going to mission to the eastern front (in Ukraine) of the II. WW.

When the Russian army occupied Debrecen, front-bomber units had used the airfield between 1945 and 1946. In the 1946-1955 period, Debrecen was the first stop for the planes in the support of Russian expedition power in Austria, the Li-2 transporters (Russian licence-copy of DC-3/C-47) landed and started in Debrecen. In the 1946-1974 period, the planes of the Hungarian airlines (MALÉV) also used the Soviet airbase with Li-2 and Il-14 transporters.

In 1952-53, the airbase retrieved its original duty, the Soviet 727. Guards bomber regiment, one of the regiments of the 171. bomber division (171. BAD) was stationed at the airbase, with its Il-28 bombers, Il-28R reconnaissance and Il-28UB training aircrafts. These planes were in use until 1982, only the IL-28R was replaced by Yak-28R in 1968. In 1968, the unit had 33 Il-28 and 9 Yak-28R. In 1980, the greatest reconstruction of the airbase ended, and the recently used runway 05/23 (2500m x 40 m) was opened, instead of the old 2500m x 60/90m runway. (The building of the old runway started even in 1942 by the Hungarian air force, and was lengthened by the occupiing German and Russian troops.)

In the 1976-1990 period AFB Debrecen given home for a standalone helicopter reconnasaince wing with MI-8PPA and (in any sources) MI24RH and K helicopters.

After the 1980 reconstruction of the airbase,i 1982, the old Il-28s of the 727. Guards Bomber regiment were replaced by SU-24M aircrafts. In 1988, the Sukhoy regiment was replaced by the 88. fighter-bomber regiment, using MiG-27D and MiG-23UB planes. This unit left Debrecen in 1990.
