Michael,

I have been traveling with coolers for packing gear for about 15
years now. There are different ways to approach it. Some guys
secure the lids with a long piano style hinge on the back and a
single or double clasp on the front. This is probably the most
secure way. I never did because it implies something of value inside
and I like to remain as anonymous and low key as possible while
traveling. Personally, here's what I do. If the cooler is new, the
first thing is to beat it up a little bit. Scratches and abrasions
probably help on the theft level. New and shiny implies value, old
and beat is less attractive.

To secure it I simply take two heavy weight (as heavy as you can
find!) luggage straps. I put one through both handles and across the
top and secure it. I take the second and run it all the way around
the case in the middle from front to back, looping it around the top
strap so they are intertwined dead center on the top. I then duct
tape the two together with multiple layers of tape in a x-fashion,
first from one side and the the other. Luggage handlers will pick it
up by the strap. If the two are together it relieves tension on the
handles by placing tension on the bottom of the cooler. Be sure to
duct tape loose ends to the strap so they are not available as grab
points. And check the security of it by trying your best to break
the tape. If you use good duct tape with the threads running through
it with a solid adhesive, it always works.

As crude as this is, I have never had it come apart. If you use
clothing, wetsuits, etc and pack everything tight enough so nothing
moves inside the case when you shake it, you are probably safe. In
hundreds of flights, I have never had a problem with theft or damaged
gear (knock on wood!).

Coolers are great for travel - blown foam protective walls, anonymity
and cheap to boot. I use either a 54 or 80 (or both) depending on
the gig.
