TOKYO, Nov 25 (Reuters)(DS) - Real Madrid, in Tokyo for next
week's Intercontinental Cup clash with Boca Juniors, are
determined to continue Europe's domination of the annual
challenge, seeing the world's most expensive player Luis Figo
as key.
Club president Florentino Perez, claiming Real to be the
best supported team in the world with 80 million fans, said the
club would be pushing for their third world club victory in the
match on Tuesday.
"It means a lot to the club because by some estimates there
are 80 million Real Madird fans around the world, making us the
most universal club," Perez said late on Friday.
"We want to win the Intercontinental Cup for a third time
for all of them."
Real arrived in Japan in good heart following Wednesday's
2-0 victory over England's Leeds United in the first round of
second-phase games of the European Champions League at Elland
Road.
Real will meet South American champions Boca Juniors,
Argentina's most passionately supported club and the favourite
team of former star Diego Maradona.
The last South American team to win the annual clash
between the club champions of Europe and South America was
Argentina's Velez Sarsfield in 1994.
On Figo, who will play in the match, Perez said he was
delighted with the form of his world record $56.1 million
Portuguese midfielder.
Perez, who ousted previous president Lorenzo Sanz after
setting up Figo's transfer from Real's bitter rivals,
Barcelona, before the start of the season, said the 28-year-old
player was good business.
"He is one of the best players in the world and is good
business for Real Madrid, not just in sporting terms but also
for economic reasons," he said.
"In life nothing is too expensive, and I am sure that we
will win a lot of money with Figo in the team.
"He is a good professional, the best professional, and his
life in Barcelona is now forgotten because he is at the best
club in the world," Perez said.
