Spacey Might Have to Battle X-Man for Bobby Darin Role

Bobby Darin was known for his brashness, which may explain why actors aren't shy about expressing their desire to play the '50s pop icon on the big screen. First Kevin Spacey boldly announced on "60 Minutes" that the coveted part was almost certainly his. Only
problem: Marin County director Barry Levinson, who has been trying to get this biopic made for six years, apparently wants a younger star, since Darin died at 37.

Now James Marsden -- newly empowered as an X-Man in this week's humongous box-office hit -- tells Movie Insider, "I have always wanted to approach Barry Levinson and say, `If you make this movie, I have to play the role.´ "

The 26-year-old Marsden has a lot to recommend him besides his age, which happens to match Darin's at his prime. A trained baritone, Marsden says he can alter his voice to sound just like the singer's renditions of "More" and "Mack the Knife" (including the finger snapping, we hope). "I really pride myself on my impersonation."

As a kid, he would put these songs on a loop and listen to them over and over. "I´m a big fan. I think Bobby bridged the gap between Sinatra and rock ´n´ roll."

Even Marsden's resemblance to Tom Cruise works in his favor. Sandra Dee, who was married to Darin, picked Cruise as her first choice for the movie. (Incidentally, she thinks Drew Barrymore would be a perfect Sandra Dee.)

When we told Marsden he may be too good-looking to play Darin, he said,
"Well, mess me up." His teenybopper fans undoubtedly would be
happy to oblige.
