David Beckham missed a penalty as United crashed to a 3-1 defeat against hosts Bayern Munich in the Masters 2000 final at the Olympic Stadium.
Beckham had a chance to level the match after 51 minutes when the ref awarded the spot-kick after a foul on Quinton Fortune who burst through after a one-two with Dwight Yorke.
His tame shot was saved by Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn and Roy Keane missed with the follow-up.
The Germans took the lead on the stroke of half-time when they were awarded a penalty of their own for a foul by Mickael Silvestre on Roque Santa Cruz.
Mehmet Scholl stepped up to fire high past Fabien Barthez who would be beaten twice more on his United debut.
Alexander Zickler finished off the Reds with a double strike midway though the second half.
Fortune pulled one back for United with five minutes to go, but the 43,000 crowd at the Olympic Stadium were already celebrating their revenge by then.
