A neve: yotsuwari shinai. Lásd: "yotsuwari shinai (bamboo swords made with four slats)"

Tozando blog [1]:

"Taking the place of real swords, habiki swords, and wooden swords (bokuto), shinai were created to make direct contact during training possible and thus allow for a more practical, “real world” style of training. Initially, fukuro shinai, or yatsu-wari due to being split 8 times, were used beginning in the mid to late 1500’s. [...]

During the Edo period, with the advent and regular use of bogu became common, the stronger, harder, 4 slat shinai shinai used in modern kendo was also developed."

A wikis szócikk ilyeneket ír:

"Nakanishi-ha Ittō-ryū (中西派一刀流) was founded by Nakanishi Chuta Tanesada who studied under either the 5th or 6th generation headmaster of Ono-ha Ittō-ryū, before establishing his own style. His son revolutionized practice by implementing the use of shinai, a bamboo mock sword, in conjunction with bōgu, a protective armor. (Shinai were already used in Shinkage-ryū, Nen-ryū, and Tatsumi-ryū by this time.) Using the equipment to allow swordsmen to practice techniques freely and engage in sporting matches, foreshadowing the rise of modern kendo, led to the rapid popularity of the Nakanishi branch of Ittō-ryū."

Az apa 1801-ben halt meg.

"Thereafter, during the Horeki Era (1751-1764), Nakanishi Chuzo-kotake of Itto-ryu started a new training method using an iron Men (headgear) and Kendo-gu made of bamboo, which became prevalent among many schools in a short period of time. In the Kansei Era (1789-1801), inter-school competition became popular and Samurai traveled beyond their province in search of stronger opponents to improve their skills.

In the latter half of the Edo Era (beginning of the 19th Century), new types of equipment were produced such as the Yotsuwari Shinai (bamboo swords united by tetramerous bamboo). This new Shinai was more elastic and durable than the Fukuro Shinai (literally, bag-covered bamboo sword) which it replaced."
