PARIS (AP) -- An Air Liberte passenger
jet and a small cargo plane collided early
Thursday at Charles de Gaulle airport
north of Paris, killing one member of the
cargo crew and injuring another. There
were no injuries on the passenger plane.

The passenger plane was carrying about
150 Spanish soccer fans who had been
in the French capital for a Champions
League finals match between Valencia
and Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
Real Madrid won 3-0.

The collision occurred about 3 a.m.
(0100 GMT) on the northern runway of Charles de Gaulle airport, officials at a
special crisis section at the airport said Thursday. The cargo plane, a Short-330
twin motor belonging to the British company Steam-Line, was on its way to an
airport at Luton, England.

The cargo plane was badly damaged in the collision. The Air Liberte plane, a
McDonnell-Douglas MD-80, suffered slight damage to the left wing.

The passengers of the Air Liberte plane were taken to the main international
terminal at Charles de Gaulle airport, the world's eighth busiest. A plane was sent
to take the Spanish fans back home, where they were expected to arrive later
Thursday.

Officials at the special crisis section said that the accident may have been caused
by instrument problems. No details on what caused the collision were
immediately available.

Air Liberte -- formerly owned primarily by British Airways -- and two other
airline companies, AOM and Air Littoral, recently announced their intention to
form a new airline company to rival Air France. Air Liberte flies mainly in France
and to southern European destinations, including Spain.
