A "LÉTEZÉS" létezésének a bizonyítékai? Avagy a metafizika, filozófia és logika általi "élve-boncolása". Tudomány-e a metafizika? Filozófia-e a metafizika? Értelmes egyáltalán a metafizika? A metafizika handzsázás lenne? Értelmetlen és logikusan meg nem határozott fogalmak körül? A kutya kergeti a saját farkát?

Avagy a létező, vagy nem létező baziliszkusz kergeti a saját farkát?

Alan Sokal, a New York-i Egyetem elméleti fizika professzora, 1994 végén beküldött egy áltanulmányt a Social Text címû kulturális folyóiratnak. A cikk a fizika és a matematika különbözô aktuális témáit tekinti át, és rejtett gúnnyal olyan kulturális, filozófiai és politikai tanulságokat von le, amelyekről feltételezi, hogy tetszenének a tudományt támadó divatos posztmodern filozófiai áramlatok követőinek, köztük a folyóirat szerkesztőinek.

A Social Text szerkesztői nem vették észre, hogy Sokal cikke beugratás, és megjelentették a lap 1996-os tavaszi-nyári számában. A tréfát később maga Sokal fedte fel a Lingua Francában, egy másik lapban megjelentetett cikkében. Ebben elmagyarázza, hogy Social Text-beli írása "bőségesen meg van tüzdelve mindenféle képtelenséggel", és véleménye szerint csak azért fogadták el, mert az értelmetlen szöveg jól hangzik, és megfelel a szerkesztôk ideológiai prekoncepcióinak.

Nos álláspontom szerint a metafizika sem más mint posztmodern filozófia. Azaz értelmetlen szöveg, amelyet egyesek értelmesnek próbálnak beállítani. De nem az.

 

Evidence of the existence of "EXISTENCE"? Or the "living-dissection" of metaphysics, philosophy and logic. Is metaphysics a science? Is metaphysics a philosophy? Does metaphysics make sense at all? Would metaphysics be sleight of hand? Around meaningless and logically undefined concepts? Is the dog chasing its own tail?

Or is the existing or non-existent basilisk chasing its own tail?

At the end of 1994, Alan Sokal, a professor of theoretical physics at New York University, submitted a general study to the cultural journal Social Text. The article reviews various current topics in physics and mathematics and, with hidden sarcasm, draws cultural, philosophical and political lessons that it assumes would appeal to the followers of fashionable postmodern philosophical currents that attack science, including the journal's editors.

The editors of Social Text did not notice that Sokal's article was a hack and published it in the spring-summer 1996 issue of the paper. The joke was later revealed by Sokal himself in an article published in Lingua Franca, another newspaper. In it, he explains that his writing in Social Text is "plentifully riddled with all kinds of impossibility" and that, in his opinion, it was only accepted because the nonsensical text sounded good and corresponded to the ideological preconceptions of the editors.

Well, from my point of view, metaphysics is nothing more than postmodern philosophy. That is, a meaningless text that some people try to make meaningful. But it isn't.
