A huzavona feltehetően azon ment, hogy ennek az avar-heftalita keverék népességnek az uralkodója felvette a kagáni címet, márpedig azt a türk kagán kizárólagosan magának vindikálta. Ezért a türkök igyekeztek az avarokat befeketíteni a bizánci udvar előtt. Az álavar történet így a türköktől származhat, és az avarok diszkreditációját szolgálta.

Walter Pohl: "Scholars have come up with various interpretations of this story, trying to detect the ťtrue identityŤ of the Avars behind its narrative: the Avars were in fact Juan-Juan, Hephthalites, Ogurs or possibly other peoples. But Theophylact’s account is more complex than that. Probably, the story is derived from the enemies of the Avars, the Turks, who threatened the annihilate the Avars under their hooves and on one occasion strongly reproached the Byzantines for having concluded a treaty with the Avars."
