Fourth Bali bomber jailed

A young Islamic militant has been jailed for 15 years by an Indonesian court for his role in last year's suicide bombings on the resort island of Bali.

The chief judge at the Denpasar district court said that Anif Solchanudin, a 24-year-old mobile telephone salesman, was "proven without doubt to have participated in acts of terrorism".

Solchanudin had admitted that he had been interested in becoming a suicide bomber, but denied any advance knowledge of the attacks.

The prosecution had accused him of receiving training to become a bomber.

Judge Daniel Palitin also told the court that the defendant was guilty of charges of possessing explosives. Solchanudin had been found with 29 bullets in his possession.

Prosecutors had sought a 10-year sentence.

Bystanders killed

Palitin said that Solchanudin's "crime is a crime against humanity" and his acts had caused particular suffering to the families of the 20 bystanders killed in the attacks on three busy restaurants on the palm-fringed island.

He also noted that Solchanudin had persisted with his wish to become a suicide bomber, even though death sentences were meted out to three Islamic militants involved in the 2002 bombings in Bali which left 202 people dead.

"This crime caused many victims and loss and the people of Bali are still suffering until now," the judge added.

Solchanudin is the fourth man to be sentenced over the attacks, which are thought to have been masterminded by Malaysian Islamic extremists Azahari Husin and Noordin Mohammad Top.

The other three received sentences ranging from eight to 18 years earlier this month.

An Indonesian court has sentenced a former teacher to eight years in prison for his role in last year's bombings on the resort island of Bali, which killed 20 people.

Judge Nyoman Gede Wirya, presiding over the state court in Denpasar, the Balinese capital, said Abdul Aziz, 30, was guilty of the primary charges of  "engaging or taking part in" an act of terrorism.

Aziz was found guilty of creating a website for Azahari Husin and Noordin Top, senior members of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI)who were both alleged to have masterminded the Bali attack. Husin was killed in a police raid in 2005.

Aziz was also convicted of harbouring Noordin, one of Asia's most wanted men who has eluded capture by Indonesian police several times and remains on the run.

Judge Wirya said Aziz - who also set up a website calling on Muslims to wage war against "infidels" - committed "a gross crime against humanity" through his actions.

Aziz's lawyer said he may appeal against the sentence.

The suicide blasts, which singled out three restaurants on the island popular with tourists last October, also wounded more than 150 people.

Victims' anger

Three other suspects accused in the 2005 bombings are charged with harbouring Noordin or making or transporting the explosives used in the attacks.

Their verdicts are expected in the next few days.

The Jemaah Islamiyah group has also been blamed for the 2002 Bali bombings in which 202 people, mainly tourists from Australia, were killed when two bombs exploded in the busy nightclub area of the island.

In June this year, the Indonesian authorities released Abu Bakr Bashir, a Muslim religious leader alleged to have founded the group, after serving two years in prison for conspiracy over the 2002 bomb plot.

The decision caused widespread anger among victims' families and the Australian government, which said his sentence had been too lenient.
