A: Yes, all the time. It's a natural reaction when we are afraid or angry. Then we'll bite hard. 'Coons also nip in play or in warning that we are getting angry.
Q: Should a raccoon be punished for biting?
A: Be careful how you do it! If you hit me, I'll assume it's an unprovoked attack and act accordingly. The best thing to do is to say "NO" sternly, and hope I want to be in your good graces.

A: Yes, but it's not easy. We can be taught that you want us to use a litter box, and we'll agree to do so most of the time. The exceptions are 'marking' during mating season and as an expression of anger over some slight (i.e., not being fed on time).

A: Yes, but we are willing to negotiate the issue. If you give us our own belongings from the time we are tiny and frequently replace them when we annihilate them, we'll generally agree to leave your things alone.

A: Humans misinterpret the signs of sexual maturation during mating season. For differing reasons, both sexes are prone to aggression during mating season. Once it is over, we return to being your loving pet until next year.

A: Not really. If your house can withstand the onslaught of an active two year old that can climb sheer walls, it's probably safe from me.

Q: Should there be multiple raccoons in a house?
A: Probably not. As an adult, I'm inclined to be a solitary animal, and I don't like to share.
Q: Do 'coons get fleas?
A: Yes. We get both cat and dog fleas, which are different. Use pyrethrins in a good program of life-cycle control just as for dogs or cats. Treat the house in preference to putting potentially dangerous chemicals directly on me!

A: In general, no, but we do tend to become obese if we are allowed. And those that are obese tend to have heart conditions that significantly shorten their lives.

Q: Do raccoons shed?
A: Not like a dog or a cat. Once a year in early spring the 'coon's coat "cracks". The dead hair of the winter coat comes out in clumps. In the wild, the den is lined with it to keep the newborns warm.

A: No, I'll groom my own coat, thank you - like a cat. Some of us may enjoy joining you in the bath, but most don't like getting water on their backs.

A: Mine or yours? The raccoon should be 6 to 8 weeks old and not yet weaned. If you do the weaning, it seems to create a firmer fond between the two.
Q:. Can an adult raccoon be turned into a pet?
A: Yes, but it's difficult. In the instances where I've known it to happen, the raccoon is more independent and less affectionate than one who 's been bottle fed from a baby.
Q: Should children and raccoons be raised together?
A: This is a personal decision. I've known of a family that raised 2 children and 3 raccoons, a squirrel, a cat and two dogs together successfully. You have to assume that at some point the children will be bitten by the pet raccoon. This probably precludes the children from entertaining friends in the home.
Q: How can I get a pet raccoon?
A: The first thing to do is to find out if it is legal in your state to have a pet raccoon. See my page about this. If the answer is yes, get a list of breeders from your state wildlife commission. Visit the breeders and pick the kit of your choice. Usually, the gentler, quieter babies make the best pets. Not all raccoons will make good pets! Avoid the fractious ones. Some states allow the importation of raccoons if your state does not have local breeders. Florida breeders may have raccoon kits year round; most other states only have kits in early spring. People usually put in their orders for a baby months in advance.
mosómedvét én is nagyon szeretnék tartani már pár éve, de sajnos nem adottak a körülmények egyenlőre - kertes ház híján...
Egyébként már találkoztam mosómedve gazdival, akinek meg is néztem a maciját.
Nagyon kíváncsi állatka - mint bármelyik szőrmók szerintem... A hátizsákomba egyből belemászott, mikor pedig meglátta hogy milyen finomságot vittem neki a lábamat sem kímélve felmászott rám...Mit mondjak jól belémmélyesztette a karmait, de hát nem rossz szándékkal tette, csak nagyon torkos.
De ez úgy általában jellemző rájuk. Az állatketben is mindig ott koldulnak a kőfal előtt, ha éppen nem a fatörzskben szundítanak vagy a fára másznak...
Egyébként más mosómaci tartóktól vett információim alapján tartható háziállatként, de persze sosem lesz belőle kutya... Önfejű, makacs állatka, megvan a maga akarata. És néha ok nélkül is harap. Verni épp ezért egyáltalán nem szabad - bár semmilyen állat verését nem pártolom amúgy sem - mert keresni fogja az alkalmat, hogy megbosszulja!

Most szombaton a jászberényi zoo-ban voltunk és két nőstény mosómedvét láttunk. Nagyon jól elszórakoztunk rajtuk, egymásnak kiabáltak mindenféle csúnyaságot, az egyik az akácfán, a másik a vízben ült. Most van az ivarzásuk és a gondozóhölgy szerint csak távolról tudják etetni őket, annyira fel vannak "izgulva".
Egyébként lehet tartani, de csak kertes házban ajánlott, mert nagy hely kell neki.
Ormányos medvét is lehet tartani, az is hasonló, Jberényben az is volt, egy egész falka.
Tősgyökeres mosómedvebuziként végre én is itt vagyok!
A mosómedve személyiség! Elég sajátos elképzelései vannak a létről!
Szerintem csak akkor szabad kölyköt venni, ha tényleg nagy hely van neki, fával, vízzel kövekkel. Viszont a szomszédban és a környéken ne nagyon legyenek baromfiak, mert azokat jóllakottan is lepusztítja, a vadászat kedvéért. És nincs még egy olyan szabadulóművész, mint ez az állat, hiába minden igyekezet... A zsebeket szigorúan zárva kell tartani, mert két mancs be és utána a fej, és nagyon mérges lesz, ha nem tetszik neked, hogy a zsebeidben elégíti ki a kíváncsiságát. Ragaszkodó jószág, amennyire én hallottam, szereti a gazdit.
Csak az a kérdés, hogy mennyire idomítható. Mert én nem szeretném szegény mosómacit ketrecbe zárni. Az lenne jó, hogy szabadon mászkálna ide-oda csak ne rágja meg a cuccokat :-)

Közeli rokona a macskaféléknek, tképpen ragadozó, de mindent felfal, imád turkászni a szeméttelepeken.
Könnyen megszelidül, az USA-ban sokan tartják háziállatként - bár hogy kimondottan házban-e, azt nem tudom, azt sem, hogy mennyire szobatiszta, vagy hogy jön ki más állatokkal.
Több, mint fél évszázada Európában is megtalálható vadon; először az NSZK-ba telepítettek be, de már megtalálható Francia- és Lengyelo.-ban, Ausztriában, sőt, Magyaro-on is láttak már Sopron közelében!
Piszok sokat tud aludni egyvégtében, a kedvence a madártojás.
Lakásban biztos nem tartható. Olvastam a www.gorke.hu-n, volt olyan, aki megpróbálta - 30 négyzetméteres lakrészt kapott a lakásból.. de mindent szétrámolt, csak éjszaka "élt", nappal csak aludt. És ráadásként, amikor ivarérett lett, megvadult és megtámadta többször is a gazdáját. Végül az Állatkert fogadta be. Szóval lakásban semmiféleképpen ne..
Nálunk volt az állatkereskedésben egy pár hetes mosómaci, cumisüvegből lett etetve, mert még szopós volt. Aztán nagyobb lett,megvették, és itt sétáltatták. Én is fel voltam háborodva ezen, amig meg nem ismertem a tulajt, azért vették meg, mert folyamatban volt a költözésük vidékre, ahol külön rezidenciát készitettek a macinak.
Szóval lakásban nem tartható ebben biztos vagyok, de ha megfelelő körülményeket biztositanak neki, akkor talán.
Itt lesz lehetősége minden kedves mosómedve tartónak és persze rajongónak, hogy megosszák tapasztalataikat a mosómaci tartás rejtelmeiről.
Sokan vannak akik el sem tudják képzelni, hogyan lehet tartani egy ilyen kis kedves állatkát, milyenek a mosómaci szokásai, mivel táplálkozik.
Én személy szerint (A topic nyitója) szeretnék tartani egy mosómacit, viszont előtte jól ki szeretném tanulni a mosómaci tartás módját, hogy jó legyen a macinak! :-)
Aztán ha van rá igény, akkor elindíthatok egy mosómedvés weboldalt, ami cikkek és portál formájában mutatja be ezeknek az állatkáknak az életét, a cikkekeket viszont a hozzáértő mosómaci tartók írnák és maradandóbbat alkotnánk mint egy fórum topic.
