Belgium Becomes a Victim of Its Own Bogus 'War Crimes' Law
"Holier-than-thou Belgium, whose phony "war crimes" law allows any Joe Blow to bring charges against a citizen of any nation, is getting a taste of its own medicine.
The obscure nationalist party New Flemish Alliance is seeking a life sentence for Foreign Minister Louis Michel for approving weapons sales to Nepal. Michel, who loudly denounced Operation Iraqi Freedom, is the first Belgian to face a complaint under the 1993 law.
"They are doing a disservice to those who have a real need of the law," complained Reed Brody, counsel with Human Rights Watch in New York.
Under the lax law, Belgians and even non-Belgians have accused everyone from President Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and Yasser Arafat.
"This is extremely irresponsible. It's completely crazy and irrational," Michel raged.
"It will ridicule Belgium on the world stage."
