WASHINGTON – US Sen. John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, had hoped to meet with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon during his visit to Washington, but Sharon declined, saying he did not have time.
Sharon, however, agreed to meet Kerry during his next trip to Washington, according to Israeli officials and Kerry campaign staff members.
Kerry on Wednesday blessed the agreements struck by US President George W. Bush and Sharon. Bush said after meeting Sharon that Palestinian refugees should return to a future state of Palestine, not Israel, and sanctioned the idea that Israel would retain control of some settlements as part of a final peace deal.
"I think that could be a positive step," Kerry was quoted by The Washington Post as saying. "What's important, obviously, is the security of the state of Israel, and that's what the prime minister and the president, I think, are trying to address."
Kerry was also quoted, in The New York Sun, as saying: "I've always felt that the right of return is contrary to the viability of a Jewish state, and that's what Israel is." (...)

Though President Bush's policy shift favoring large, lasting Israeli settlements in the West Bank will be felt most directly in the Middle East, it also could have political echoes this fall in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Cleveland and Miami.
The Bush campaign is hopeful that one indirect product of the president's strong backing of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will be to pull enough Jewish votes in battleground states to ensure his re-election.
The White House, of course, spoke of no political motive, and even some prominent Jewish Democrats applauded the president's announcement as good policy.
Several analysts said, however, that they were SKEPTICAL that the surprise announcement would have LASTING impact politically.
"A lot of these events are not transformative in terms of vote choice," said Terry Madonna, director of the Keystone Poll in Pennsylvania, one of the states expected to be the most heatedly contested in the presidential race.
"Even in this environment where we all agree there are a relatively small number of genuinely undecided voters in a highly polarized environment, a lot of events will push and pull on the undecideds, [until November]," Madonna said.

Few expect Bush to attract anything close to Reagan's level of support among Jews, but in what is expected to be an extremely close election, the swing of a few hundred or a few thousand votes in key states could be critical, and Jews who support Bush's policy on Israel could make the difference.

At the same time, in states such as Ohio and Michigan that have sizable Arab-American populations, Bush's policies could have the opposite effect, with the result a zero sum game in the presidential contest.
Ira Forman, executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council, said that Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's quick move to endorse the policy might also blunt any advantage for Bush. But Jews, like other voting groups, are not predominantly single-issue voters. "I am baffled as to what the net gain is [for Bush]," said pollster John Zogby.
While uncertain about the effect of Bush's decision on Jewish voters, Zogby said he was far more confident in predicting that Arab-Americans who had supported Bush in 2000 would reject him in 2004.
"This is a community that has really soured," Zogby said.

President Bush is on a roll in the Middle East . . . backward. His embrace of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's positions on settlements and Palestinian refugees has needlessly squandered U.S. leverage in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

But Bush ignores the fact that there can be powerful reasons not to say the obvious -- and that studied ambiguity is an important part of successful diplomacy. That's why six previous administrations had resisted taking the step Bush did Wednesday and endorsing one side's positions in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. They wanted to preserve America's ability to act as a mediator, in part because they believed that role best served the interests of America's ally, Israel.
Bush is not a man for diplomatic ambiguity. He famously prefers to see things in simpler, black-or-white terms. [Ez is igaz, de sajnos itt most ennél többről van szó. What makes Bush's abandonment of long-standing U.S. positions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict so unfortunate is that it was unnecessary. The Israelis have powerful security reasons for withdrawing unilaterally from Gaza and dismantling their settlements there. It's not a concession that the United States should have to buy by sacrificing its own negotiating leverage; it's something most Israelis want because it's in their country's interest. Sharon's problem is the settlers, and the faction within his own party that supports them. They're likely to oppose his withdrawal plan despite whatever goodies he brings home from Washington.
Bush's disdain for decades of diplomacy is costly for the United States. At a time when America needs allies in a real war in Iraq and against Islamic terrorists, Bush's polarizing style fends them off. Saddest of all, in his eagerness to help Israel, Bush may be undermining America's greatest gift to its friend and ally: the ability to help broker a deal with the Palestinians.

WASHINGTON - Responding to Arab outrage and European concern, President Bush on Friday defended Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to withdraw from Gaza and part of the West Bank.

In an exchange with reporters, Bush reiterated his support for Sharon's withdrawal plan but avoided repeating his earlier statement that ruled out the return of Palestinian refugees to Israel and supported Israel's retention of some Jewish population centers on the West Bank.
Those remarks caused Palestinian leaders to accuse Bush of siding with Israel and undermining any chance for negotiations, and raised eyebrows among the European allies, as well.
Bush stressed on Friday that all such issues "must still be negotiated between the parties."
"I look forward to the day when those discussions can begin so the Israeli occupation can be ended and a free and independent and peaceful Palestinian state can emerge," he said.
Blair, in his remarks, also welcomed Israel's proposed withdrawal and said the "road map" for peacemaking with the Palestinians, approved by the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia, remained "the ONLY REALISTIC course" to a settlement.
The prime minister said the so-called Quartet should meet as soon as possible to discuss how it could support the Palestinian Authority economically, politically and with security in its response to Sharon's overture.
Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen, hosting a meeting of European leaders in Ireland, also called for a high-level meeting of the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia.
European Officials there said they expected foreign ministers to meet in Berlin April 28.
But in Washington, a senior U.S. official said making arrangements was complicated and that no time or location had been chosen for a Quartet meeting.
Cowen said the road map did NOT envision Israel's ANNEXATION of five Jewish population concentrations on the West Bank, as Sharon proposed and Bush appeared to back.
He said whatever Israel offers or the United States recommends, any agreement will require Palestinian acceptance.

WASHINGTON - The Sept. 11 inquiry has pieced together a picture of the post-Sept. 11 terrorist — adaptable, agile, lacking the command structure of al-Qaida in its heyday but LETHAL ENOUGH to attack the United States with POISON, a DIRTY BOMB or a multitude of other means.
In place of the cohesive network that Osama bin Laden built, diverse organizations inspired and in some cases aided by al-Qaida ARE PLOTTING attacks, federal officials said. Such groups are operating mostly autonomously while sharing technology of mass death, they said.
Officials have made clear that al-Qaida, despite the loss of some of its high-ranking members, is not a spent force. "CATASTROPHIC attacks on the scale of September 11 REMAIN within al-Qaida's reach," CIA Director George Tenet testified to the commission investigating the 2001 attacks.
U.S. intelligence services are focusing on the Summer Olympics in Greece as a one prime terrorism worry. Also major concerns are the PRESINDENTAL nominating CONVENTIONS THIS SUMMER in Boston and New York.
In commission hearings, government witnesses described an ARRAY of like-minded groups able to hatch their own plots and reach beyond their own territory. Another tier consists of smaller organizations abroad devoted to local mayhem that may target U.S. interests.
"These far-flung groups increasingly set the agenda, and are redefining the threat we face," Tenet said. "They are not all creatures of bin Laden, and so their fate is not tied to his. They have autonomous leadership, they pick their own targets, and they plan their own attacks."
John Brennan, director of the federal Terrorist Threat Integration Center, added: "More attacks ARE in the planning stages, and U.S. lives and property are being ACTIVELY targeted by al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations that have death and destruction as their principle goals."
The commission's next public hearings are in mid-May. It will hear privately from President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, though the date has not been disclosed.
In testimony, commissioners were told of:
_100,000 names and aliases in a worldwide terrorist database.
_Intelligence suggesting more than 100 al-Qaida-trained extremists are in Europe.
_A heightened risk of POISON attacks, coupled with the danger that groups other than bin Laden's network will put their heads together and FIND SOPHISTICATED ways to deliver such a weapon.
_The dissemination among terrorist groups of assembly instructions for a CHEMICAL weapon using common materials that could cause mass casualties in a crowded area.
_Terrorist documents containing accurate information on how a RADIOLOGICAL DIRTY BOMB might be used.
Tenet, in the first of two appearances, said that "for the growing number of jihadists interested in attacking the United States, a SPECTACULAR attack on the U.S. homeland is the brass ring that many strive for, with or without encouragement by al-Qaida's central leadership."
The government has identified a variety of Sunni extremist groups as beneficiaries of links to Sept. 11 mastermind bin Laden's organization. Among them: the al-Zarqawi network, the Ansar al-Islam in Iraq, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, Jemaah Islamiyah in Southeast Asia and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.
Smaller, local groups include the Salifiya Jihadia in Morocco, said to be responsible for the suicide bombings in Casablanca in May that killed 45 people.
Groups such as these operate without the full multinational network of training, financing, communication and other logistics that al-Qaida could supply its cells, officials said. Their relative isolation can also make them harder to run down.

Én meg azt gondolom, hogy mer. A sarokbaszorított vad mindig támad, akkor is, ha maga is belepusztul. Márpedig a rendfenntartó pénzforrás eccerűen kiapadt, s a status quo-t fenntartani már csak erőszakkal lehet.
Félek, hogy a Saron-terv Bush általi támogatása és esetleges megvalósulása miatt az eddigieknél még szörnyűbb és akár minket is veszélyeztető világterror várható.
Egyszerűen nem értem, hogy Bush - akiről azt is írják, hogy valójában inkább arab érdekeltségű körök embere - hogy mer ekkorát kockáztatni újbóli megválasztása érdekében? Vagy azt hiszi, hogy egy emiatt nyilvánvalóan sokkal motiváltabb újabb Amerika elleni borzalmas terrortámadás (ami lehet vegyi, biológiai is) az ő malmára hajtja a vizet?
De Saront se értem. Azt hiszi, hogy ilyenekkel jobban megússza a pert? Vagy hogy mint a Magna Izrael megteremtője kerül be a történelemkönyvbe?
S aztán, vagy e helyett, hogy mi lesz az izraeliekkel, az nem számít?
