FC Utrecht draw with RKC in Waalwijk

Last Saturday FC Utrecht got one point in the away match against RKC Waalwijk. Foeke Booy's squad managed to tie the score before half-time, but saw the home team nevertheless level the score in the second half: 2-2.

Also on this occasion FC Utrecht and RKC created a nerve-racking match with many hectic moments. This is what happened after fifteen minutes. David Di Tomasso assaulted RKC player Vasconcelos, after which referee Van der Hilst pointed at the penalty spot. Joost Terol stopped Rick Hoogendoorn's penalty kick, but on the second instance he did not stand a chance against the striker's header.

Both teams were not afraid to fight. Quite soon RKC had to do without Rustenburg, who dropped out with an injury. FC Utrecht had to continue without Alje Schut.

After an uphill battle of thirty minutes for FC Utrecht, Michael Mols could take advantage of a misunderstanding in the RKC defense seven minutes before half-time. Vermaelen kicked the ball back to Klompe, who had not counted on that. Mols captured the ball and passed by goalkeeper Khalid Sinouh. This meant the first goal for Mols since his return to FC Utrecht. And what is more, his fiftieth in the service of FC Utrecht.

Three minutes later again RKC lost the ball and Darl Douglas gave FC Utrecht a lead of 1-2 after a splendid individual action. He outplayed an RKC defender with his right leg and sent the ball with his left leg in the direction of the corner of the goal.

Right after half-time RKC started the chase after the equalizer and stepped up the pressure. FC Utrecht relapsed and restricted themselves to defending. In that phase there were not any marked chances for the home team. FC Utrecht simply kept upright and could have increased the lead even further via Tim Cornelisse half an hour before the final whistle. He could have decided the match, but the defender was stopped by Sinouh.

With the home matches ahead against FC Groningen and Heerenveen, FC Utrecht could have done a good deal. FC Utrecht was immediately faced with the consequences of the missed chance by Cornelisse. After a free kick by Robert Fuchs, the FC Utrecht defense failed to take notice of Vermaelen, who headed his team beside FC Utrecht again.

During the extra time Sander Keller almost brought FC Utrecht the victory after a good long shot. Only with an all-out effort did Sinouh manage to get his hand behind the ball.

Loss against ADO Den Haag in end phase

As it was last year, FC Utrecht underestimated the final 15 minutes against ADO Den Haag. With only 4 minutes to go in the Zuiderpark stadium and a 0 - 0 score so far, Joost Terol could not control the ball well after a free kick. Substitute Edson was the first man who reached the ball and he scored the only hit of the match. It looked like the hit by Dirk Kuyt the week before in the home match against Feyenoord.

FC Utrecht, still playing without Stefaan Tanghe, had a good opening phase. In the first minutes ADO Den Haag asked for a penalty kick twice. First David di Tommaso and then Joost Broerse had allegedly touched the ball by hand, but according to Van Hulten (referee), too, they did not do that on purpose.

The first possibility after fourteen minutes was for Darl Douglas, who could easily approach the goal after bad defending by ADO defender El-Akchaoui. However, he met with goalkeeper Dorus de Vries. This resulted in a corner that was badly defended as well. Schut got the ball and could take a swing on it.

After that promising opening phase, the home team came into the match more and more. ADO Den Haag became stronger, but they did not succeed in creating open chances. A dangerous attack via Cedric van der Gun was intercepted just in time by Alje Schut and a distant kick by Tommie van der Leegte just passed the goal of Joost Terol.

In the last fifteen minutes of the first half, FC Utrecht took the initiative more and more. A cross from the left wing by Di Tommaso reached Joost Broerse. The midfielder's kick, however, hit the crossbar. Schut, too, was nearly successful just before halftime.

ADO Den Haag played with more pressure in the second half. Both teams got chances and the best chance was for FC Utrecht in the 55th minute. Tim Cornelisse headed a cross by Rick Kruys just beyond the goal. After an absence of two months, Jean-Paul de Jong made his comeback in the 59th minute. He substituted Rick Kruys. De Jong played somewhat ill at ease. Hans van de Haar, again, substituted Michael Mols ten minutes before the end.

FC Utrecht did not score, but they seemed not to be taking a counter score for the fourth time in a match away. One point was absolutely possible. Nevertheless it went wrong just before time.

Because of that Booy talked about an unnecessary defeat. 'A draw would have been the right result. But then you have to play professionally in the end phase and that's what we failed to do. We have ourselves to blame. The free kick was unnecessary and after that a lot went wrong. It's a great pity, because with a draw we would have kept the fifth position'.

ADO coach Frans Adelaar, too, talked about a typical draw like match, in which his team got the maximum result nevertheless. 'Two teams that place great importance on power and passion met each other. Together with today's weather conditions this did not result in a good match', Adelaar said, who is having a good series with ADO. In his opinion it is typical for the opponents that nowadays they will settle for a draw in the Zuiderpark stadium.

FC Utrecht defeated by Feyenoord

FC Utrecht, who played in stadium Galgenwaard, was defeated by Feyenoord last Sunday. The team from Rotterdam won with 0-2.

If FC Utrecht had won this match they would have had the same amount of points in the league. Unfortunately, Feyenoord was ready for battle and Utrecht was not able to score. 'It was a nice match', John van Loen said afterwards. 'We were able to give Feyenoord a hard time, but not hard enough'. Van Loen did the honours, while the suspended Foeke Booy was forced to watch the match from the press gallery.

Booy saw his team start the match very dynamically. Within the first five minutes FC Utrecht came dangerously near the Feyenoord goalkeeper Patrick Lodewijks. David di Tommaso was close to an early opening goal with a header as a result of a corner by Ricky Kruys. Saïdi saved on the goal line. Shortly afterwards Michael Mols failed to push the cross by Hans Somers into the goal.

Feyenoord, who had been very accurate in making goals in the last few weeks, cashed their first opportunity. Dirk Kuijt served the uncovered Romeo Castelen in the tenth minute and the striker lifted the ball skilfully over Joost Terol.

Ruud Gullit came to the conclusion with satisfaction that his team was able to remain standing up in the fysical fight in Galgenwaard. 'We knew that we had to survive the first twenty minutes, because FC Utrecht would give pressure right away, and so we did. From that point on we were playing increasingly better football'.

Darl Douglas caused some danger during the first half of the match with a nice individual action. He put some Feyenoord players aside, but his sizzler went straight over the goal. On the other side a free kick by Basto narrowly missed the goal via Kuijt. Just before half time Michael Mols skilfully passed the ball back to Somers. The sizzler by Somers, however, missed the right direction.

Early in the second half Feyenoord enlarged the lead. Twelve minutes after the break Terol could not control a header by Saïdi and Kuijt was already there to finish the job.

Only a fast concurring goal could bring the excitement back in the match. FC Utrecht tried to do so, but could not avert the second home defeat of this season. This was also the case because Lodewijks interfered a few times very well. The goalkeeper of Feyenoord turned away a shot by Douglas with his foot and reacted very alert on an effort by Hans van de Haar, who substituted Mols in the 75th minute.

Victory over Roosendaal

FC Utrecht managed to rake in an important away win at RBC Roosendaal. Substitute Dwight Tiendalli scored the only goal of the evening after halftime.

During a mediocre first half neither of the two teams could form a threat. The best chance for RBC resulted from a corner kick, which was headed over the goal by Donny de Groot. FC Utrecht, who saw Stefaan Tanghe drop out with an injury already after fifteen minutes, had to make do with a rocketing free kick by Alje Schut.

In that stage of the match, the encounter seemed to end in a confirmation of the statistics, said Foeke Booy after the match in retrospect of the first 45 minutes. After all RBC did not manage to score any goals in the last three matches in their own stadium, while FC Utrecht could also hardly net the ball. That is why it was Michael Mols' turn now to start in the forward line from the kickoff, at the expense of Hans van de Haar. But also Mols did not manage to score any goal.

In the second half FC Utrecht found the openings in the Roosendaal defense after a few changes on the midfield. The result was a series of well played out chances. After sixty minutes of playing time RBC could no longer escape from the pressure and the opening goal was imminent. First Darl Douglas had an excellent chance with a header. The corner kick which followed thereupon, was barely saved from the goal line by RBC player Ramon Luyten after a header by Alje Schut. In the next FC Utrecht strike goalkeeper Maikel Aerts could stop a kick by Tim Cornelisse with his foot. It all happened within a few minutes.

In the seventieth minute Dave van den Bergh once more managed to break through on the sideline. He spotted the uncovered Mols, but Mols could not reach the cross pass. Booy stepped in and substituted Mols by Van de Haar and Joost Broerse by Dwight Tiendalli. These subsititutions turned out all right. Again it was Van den Bergh who made the opening pass. Douglas first stumbled over the ball, but Tiendalli managed to net the ball into the RBC goal after all. 'That was a pretty nasty goal', said RBC trainer Jan van Dijk.

That lead was well-deserved, but FC Utrecht subesequently failed to increase their lead. That nearly proved fatal for Booy's team in the final seconds when RBC nearly managed to level the score. A shot by striker Elvis Hammond just went across the goal.

So FC Utrecht did some good business in Roosendaal with regard to the competition for the places for the second ranking teams. 'This is a match that you have to win and that is what we did', said Booy, who - with three points in the bag - was looking forward to the next confrontation with optimism. 'The home game against Feyenoord may well be a very interesting one'.
