DEBATE OF THE DAY:
Be it Resolved: President Trump’s mental state is fair game for the media
President Trump’s recent twitter feed has renewed speculation over his mental and cognitive ability. Calling himself “so great looking and smart, a true Stable Genius!”, POTUS embarked on a series of 280-character rants directed at the fake news media, China, Mexico, Facebook, democratic candidates, and even members of his own party. Recently he has been delivering speeches in erratic tones, interrupting himself mid-sentence, abruptly changing topics with non-sequiturs, and failing to properly articulate words like ‘Origins’ (pronounced by him as ‘oranges’). He referred to Apple CEO Tim Cook as ‘Tim Apple’, called Paradise, California “Pleasure”, failed to recognize Rudy Giuliani sitting across from him, and three times forgot that his father was born in the U.S.
Trump’s critics believe he is exhibiting signs of early dementia, pointing to a group of U.S. psychiatrists who argue that his slurred speech, repetition of words, and erratic behaviour as proof of his deteriorating mental state. During a recent public speech, Trump reached under his podium and grabbed a glass with both hands, keeping them on the glass the entire time he drank, a sign of degenerating motor skills. These psychiatrists also point out that dementia is a genetic disease, and Trump’s father suffered from Alzheimer’s for the last 6 years of his life. Many want the U.S. President to undergo rigorous testing to determine whether he is in fact suffering from mental deterioration.
Trump’s supporters are aghast at this accusation. They say these are baseless armchair observations, made without adequate evidence or proper evaluation, and motivated by a self-serving desire to discredit Trump and his political agenda. A diagnosis such as this requires a through and nonpartisan examination. And just because Trump speaks and acts in a way that is not palatable to his critics does not make him mentally unfit to serve.
One Issue. Two Sides. You Decide.
PRO:
"If you compare [Trump’s] verbal productions to the way he used to speak in the 80s…he spoke in polished paragraphs. Now he can’t even complete a sentence. He has a lot of trouble with word-finding. He even makes up words. He has trouble completing a sentence without veering off into an irrelevancy. All of this is a sign of cognitive decline”

CON:
"We can raise an index of suspicion, make back-seat observations of someone’s behavior to express our concerns and even speculate as to whether illness may be the underlying cause. But those observations, coming from physicians — even psychiatrists like myself — are merely public opinion."
