"Gerard Houllier today challenged Steven Gerrard to turn his Young Player of the Year accolade into a Player of the Year award in the future.
The Liverpool youngster has been nominated the country's best young player by his fellow professionals and he received his award from England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson at a gala awards ceremony in London on Sunday night.
Houllier is delighted to see Gerrard's performances recognised in such a way, but he insists there is still more to come from his young star.
He said: "The award was well deserved and reflects the work and effort he has put in. It rewards his talent, his commitment and his progress. It is also an award for the team.
"This is just the start for Steven. A Young Player of the Year award is a sign that he has a promising future. Now he has to make that future happen. I want him to keep improving and one day win the Player of the Year award.
"How far he goes in the game depends on him. He has to keep his focus and do what he has to do. He is a very talented player and I know he can deliver even more.""
