In his first season scored the winning goal in the European Cup final against
future club Milan. Seemed destined to follow in the footsteps of other great
Dutch strikers such as Cruijff, Van Basten and Bergkamp before personal
problems threatened his career. Faced a manslaughter charge after running
over an art critic while showing off his new sports car. Kluivert escaped with
hours of community service and a driving ban.

Hounded out of Holland by unforgiving supporters with chants of 'Kluivert,
Kluivert can we cross the road' he joined Milan. Kluivert made a dream
debut, scoring a spectacular goal in a high profile pre-season friendly victory
over Juventus but his Milan career quickly went downhill. Faced with rape
charges (he was to be acquitted) and low on confidence Kluivert left after a
disastrous campaign to link up with former Ajax mentor Luis Van Gaal,
now at Barcelona.

Kluivert was an instant success at Barcelona, winning the championship
in his first season and formed a great partnership with Brazilian superstar
Rivaldo.

Kluivert's international career has been equally traumatic. He missed the
majority of Holland's 1996 European Championship campaign with injury
although scored a brilliant consolation goal against England. He made a
forgettable debut in the 1998 World Cup, earning himself a red card for
elbowing Belgian captain Lorenzo Staelens. Kluivert scored a late equaliser
in Holland's semi-final clash with Brazil, having missed a glut of earlier
chances. Holland were defeated on penalties. Two years later he finished
joint top scorer in Euro 2000 largely thanks to a hat-trick in Holland's 6-1
victory over Yugoslavia but missed a penalty in the semi-final defeat
against Italy.

Kluivert has spectacular technique, tremendous pace and great vision but
despite his height is weak in the air, easily disposed and while capable of
scoring phenomenal goals misses too many easy chances. Could be really
special if he added a bit of muscle.
