Beach Boys member Mike Love has filed a lawsuit against former band mate Brian Wilson over Smile--the famously unfinished Beach Boys opus that Wilson completed and released on his own last year to much acclaim, and at Love's expense.
The suit, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, alleges that the promotional blitz by Wilson "shamelessly misappropriated Mike Love's songs, likeness, and the Beach Boys trademark, as well as the Smile album itself," per court papers obtained by City News Service.
Love, who cowrote and sang lead on many early Beach Boys classics, alleges that the publicity campaign for Wilson's solo Smile negatively affected sales of Beach Boys albums. Particularly aggrieving Love was Wilson's decision to give away more than 2.6 million copies of a Beach Boys' compilation disc in an edition of Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper.
Love's suit seeks damages amounting to "millions of dollars in illicit profits," claiming the campaign diluted the Beach Boys' brand name, and addition $1 million-plus for international advertising "designed to correct the effects of its unfair competition and infringing uses." Other defendants include the Mail on Sunday and Sanctuary Records Group.

Pedig a Surf's Up-ot érdemes meghallgatni, elég jó lemez.
A Smile-t volt szerencsém élőben meghallgatni Frankfurtban tavaly márciusban, utána hosszú ideig egekbe magasztaltam a lemezt, csak mostanában jöttem rá, hogy inkább szélhámos blöff, mintsem hatalmas remekmű. (Ellentétben a Smile helyett annak idején kiadott Smiley Smile-lal, ami kb. a 67-es év legjobb pszichedelikus lemeze, ilyen minimál sztondult szoba-pszichedélia.)
GV box setben egyetértek, szerintem a legjobb dobozos válogatás ever (jó, mondjuk holtversenyben a Velvet Underground Peel Slowly And See-jével), külcsin és belbecs tekintetében egyaránt.
Wilson kalandos élettörténetét többen is megirták, többek között ő maga is (Wouldn't it be nice a könyv cime, 1991-ben jelent meg), a kiadása után Wilsont beperelte a teljes Beach Boys, sőt, még az anyja is, hitelrontás cimén. A neten is van elég sok cikk a témáról, most hirtelen ezt találtam.
Ha nem szívatsz, akkor töredelmesen bevallom, hogy a Surf's Up lemez kb. 1 éve figyel a polcon: használtan vettem, de még nem jutott el a lejátszóig, sajnos. (Kb. 50 másik társával együtt, visszataszítóan túlfogyasztok, na mindegy.)
A Smile-t is csak egyszer bírtam meghallgatni, befogadni pedig nullaszor, mert úgy látszik, nem voltam olyan állapotban, hogy felfogtam volna Van Dyke Parks szövegeit... De hát ez a lemez nyilván minden szempontból UFO. Először elveszett a Bermuda-háromszögben, aztán valahogyan előkerült onnan.
Valaki megírta már egyébként Wilson összeroppanásának és (viszonylagos) felépülésének hiteles történetét? Mert esetleg annak fényében felfogható lenne a Smile.
Úgyhogy jelen pillanatban mindkét lemez kívül esik a tudatomon, sajnos.
Belül esik viszont - többek között - a Pet Sounds, illetve a 2003-as (+/- 1 év?) Brian Wilson Presents... lemez. Ez utóbbitól lehidalok, konkrétan. Különösen érdekes Wilson hangját hallani: hatvanegynéhány évesen is lényegében elénekli azt, amire húsz évesen képes volt. Miközben továbbra sem teljesen beszámítható, az nyilvánvaló. A karácsonyi dalaira kíváncsi vagyok.
A másik, amit mostanában hallgatok, az a Good Vibrations Box Set. Azokat a lemezeket élmény már kézbe fogni is.
érdekes kis lista. az elejével még egyet is tudok érteni. a never mind the bollocksot és a queen is dead-et viszont sztem nem lehet eléggé túlértékelni.
Szia Peppers, te is kedveled Brian Wilson zenéjét? Ez nagyszerű, már ketten vagyunk. Szerinted a Heroes & Villains vagy a Surf's Up a jobb szám? Én mostanában ezen gondolkozom elég sokat, nem tudok dűlőre jutni. Egyébként a BBC 6 Music hallgatói megszavazták minden idők 10 leg-overratedebb lemezét, és a Pet Sounds lett a nyolcadik. Nem értek egyet, a Smile sokkal overratedebb, nagyképű és önfényező lemez, erre jöttem rá a napokban. És még egy érdekes hir, okt. 18-án jelenik meg Wilson új lemeze, amin karácsonyi dalokat ad majd elő, valaki szólhatna már neki, hogy már nem 1961-et irunk.
Nana, nem olyan egyszerű topikot törölni az indexen, majd meglátod. Bár stílusos lenne, ha már egy ilyen "self-destructive" tendenciáiról" ismert muzsikus szerepel a címben...

Atyaisten, mi ez a hirtelen érdeklődés, még a végén ciki lesz a Beach Boys :-/ numero7.com és usacd.hu címekről meg lehet rendelni az összes cd-t ilyen two-fer formában, szóval két lemez van egy cd-n, és nem is olyan drágák.
végigolvastam az egész hűbelebanc fórumot, 2 délutánom ráment :)) mostanában kattantam rá a beach boysra, most épp a Smile megy. sajna nem nagyon találok tőlük albumokat, a régieket különösen nehéz beszerezni, így maradnak a válogatások.
The legendary BRIAN WILSON brought a taste of the Californian sunshine to the GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL today (June 26) with a set full of BEACH BOYS classics in front of a massive crowd of sweltering devotees.
People were spotted surfing across the front of the stage as the singer, making his first appearance at Worthy Farm, blasted through hit after hit, delighting festivalgoers enjoying the beautiful weather.
Wilson told the crowd: 'We brought the Californian sunshine' and later even managed to get the crowd to sing the nursery rhyme 'Row Row Row Your Boat'.
Among the hits inciting mass hysteria were 'California Girls', 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' and a monumental 'Good Vibrations', which had virtually the entire crowd singing along.
One fan, Michael Clewley, told NME.COM: 'That's the show of the weekend and certainly one of the greatest ever Glastonbury performances.'

3 nappal ezelőtt volt Wilson 63. születésnapja, akkor kiment a fejemből, így most utólag kívánok neki a több tízezres magyarországi rajongótábor nevében boldog születésnapot, az isten éltesse még legalább 4-5 hónapig. És a jeles alkalomból beteszek ide két nagyon atom képet is, ezeket most találtam, eddig nem is tudtam, hogy ezek a képek léteznek
Amúgy ünnepélyesen fölavattak valami emlékművet Hawthorne-ban (California állam), azon a helyen ahol régen a Wilson család háza volt (és ahol most egy autópálya van)
