én is erre látok legtöbb esélyt!
aztán ahogy sok évvel ezelőtt mondta vissza fog térni a szülővárosába Bilbao-ba, ahol méltón befejezheti a pályafutását
örökre megszabadult a Laziótól
Gaizka Mendieta is now officially a Middlesbrough player after his loan deal from Lazio became a permanent move.
The Spanish star arrived on Teesside last term on a season-long loan, but he has now moved permanently by signing a five-year deal.
After his terrific year, which included helping Boro lift their first major trophy, rumours of a get-out clause and possible return to Spain were mooted - with the likes Athletic Bilbao and Seville mentioned as possible suitors.
However, Mendieta has now become a Middlesbrough player after his club Lazio finally paid off his move from Valencia.
Mendieta joined Lazio in 2001 for £28 million and the Italians have been struggling to pay his fee ever since.
They finally paid off the remaining £12 million in a deal which saw Stefano Fiore and Bernardo Corradi move to Estadio Mestalla this week - which meant Lazio were free to release Mendieta's registration to Middlesbrough.
The 30-year-old is now heading back to England and is ready to begin pre-season training with Boro on Monday.
Nekem se megy a letöltés. Pedig hogy imádtam még a Valenciás éveiben(most is szeretem...), a 2001es BL-döntő még most is előttem van...
Az UEFA-kupában hajrá Boro, aztán remélem a döntőben végre újra láthatom játszani, 11est lőni, örülni, győzni.
Midfielder Gaizka Mendieta insists Middlesbrough have every chance of qualifying for the Uefa Cup next term, be it through the Carling Cup or The Premiership.
The former Valencia star has made a huge impression at The Riverside since arriving from Lazio last August, and feels he has made a rapid transition to the English game.
The 29-year-old admits his time on Teesside has helped him recapture something like his best form as he has been able to rediscover regular first-team action.
"My adaptation to English football has been quite good. It's a different type of football because the theoretically weaker teams can level up games through their direct play and long balls," the Spaniard told El Mundo.
"However, if you try and play the ball, which is what we try at Boro, you can achieve great things.
"Boro is a team that is fighting to play in the Uefa Cup. I think we can manage it either through the league or the League Cup.
"I have never lost faith in myself as a player, and I have always had confidence in my possibilities.
"At Lazio I did not have the opportunities I needed as a player, but, from a sporting perspective, I am very happy with the spell I had at Barcelona."
Meanwhile, Mendieta admits he has not given up hope of forcing his way back into the Spanish national side, but insists that Boro remains his main focus.
"I have not forgotten about the Spain side, but in my current situation I realise that it is difficult for Inaki Saez to call me up," he continued.
"At the moment I prefer to concentrate on repaying the confidence Middlesbrough have put in me.
"I want to see out this year, and the next four that I have signed in my contract."
Middlesbrough have reiterated that Spanish star Gaizka Mendieta will not be leaving at the end of the season.
Mendieta is officially on loan from Italian giants Lazio, but Boro insist Mendieta agreed a five-year deal in the summer and his contract will just continue at the end of the season.
The 29-year-old has been in spectacular form since moving to The Riverside and he has been tipped to get his place in the Spanish squad back.
Mendieta's form has seen some suggest that he could be lured elsewhere - but Boro chief executive Keith Lamb insists the former Valencia man is staying put.
Boro also have Bolo Zenden and Danny Mills on loan, but their futures are unlikely to be resolved until the summer.
"There is no danger whatsoever of Gaizka Mendieta leaving Middlesbrough in the summer," chief executive Keith Lamb told the Sunday Sun.
"He has a four-year contract that starts at the end of this season.
"We have him for five years, including the first year on loan, and that should be good news for our fans.
"I will not comment on either the Bolo Zenden or Danny Mills situation, but it is different for Mendieta."
McClaren backs Mendi for Spain
Friday, 14 November 2003
Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren has backed star Gaizka Mendieta for a recall to the Spanish national side.
The emergence of youngsters like Joaquin, Xavi and Jose Antonio Reyes has seen Mendieta fall out of favour, with coach and fellow Basque Inaki Saez.
The former Valencia ace has not played for Spain for over 12 months, his last game being in November 2002.
Mendieta, who has over 40 caps to his name, has recaptured his form since moving to The Riverside from Lazio this summer and is now a firm fans' favourite.
"Mendi is getting better and better, he's been outstanding for us," said McClaren.
"He must be knocking on the door of the Spain squad.
"Some players settle in at a new club straight away, others take time.
"All the players we brought in recently have an interest in Euro 2004 and it gives them motivation to play well."
