At the Mapei team hotel police seized the medical files belonging to Stefano
Garzelli, the 2000 winner who was thrown out of this year's race after testing positive for a masking agent after the Giro's second stage.
SAECO's Gilberto Simoni meawnhile was prevented from competing by his team after a pre-race positive test for cocaine, and Mercatone Uno's rider Roberto Sgambelluri also failed a pre-race test for Nesp, a synthetic version of the red-blood-cell-boosting drug EPO.
Panaria's Faat Zakirov was another to test positive for NESP.
