Todorov completes Ł750,000 Portsmouth switch

Wednesday 20th March 2002

Bulgaria forward Svetoslav Todorov has joined Portsmouth from West Ham United in a Ł750,000 deal.

Todorov has struggled to break into the Hammers first-team in the face of competition from Frederic Kanoute, Paolo di Canio, Jermaine Defoe and Paul Kitson.

However, Redknapp believes the former Litex striker will be a success at Fratton Park. "He is a very good player, a goalscorer with good technique and a good touch," he told the club web-site.

"He is a Premiership player in my opinion and should do well in the first division. He will complement (Peter) Crouch well.

"He holds the ball up with good touches and is a good finisher. You don't play for your country as often as he has if you are not a good player. He is still young and great value for the money."

The 22-year-old joined West Ham in January 2001, but only made a handful of appearances, scoring two goals, against Spurs in last season's FA Cup and Middlesbrough in the Premiership.

He has signed a three-year deal at Fratton Park.

ANALYSIS Berger stand divides Czech fans

Wednesday 20th March 2002

Czech Republic coach Karel Bruckner is putting a brave face on Patrik Berger's decision to quit the national side.

But the loss of the Liverpool midfielder and Tomas Repka - two of the 'silver generation' who reached the final of Euro 96 - has led to intense debate about the state of the Czech game in pivnice up and down the land.

"I'm only interested in players who want to be in the national side," stated Bruckner upon hearing of Berger's retirement.

The Liverpool star had pointed to the appointment of Bruckner as one of the reasons for his decision, although he did leave the door ajar to a possible international comeback.

"Patrik hasn't spoken to me, I only know about this through the press," Bruckner lamented

But the coach was not in any mood to be grateful for Berger's hint that he may change his mind. "I am not going to wait for a phone call from Liverpool," he fumed.

According to Bruckner, Berger originally asked to be left out until the summer so he could get over his injury problems. "We had an agreement, he was the one who initiated it," the former Under-21 coach declared.

The Czech FA's decision to overlook Berger's old coach at Slavia Prague, Jozef Jarabinsky, was cited as he announced his retirement. He also echoed Repka in criticising the current leadership of the football federation.

There is no doubt Bruckner had the right credentials to replace Jozef Chovanec following the Czechs' failure to qualify for the World Cup. But the public perception remains that Jarabinsky was cold-shouldered.

The conspiracy theory goes that Jarabinsky was too much of his own man for the liking of those who run Czech football.

Bruckner was a safer option, even though the federation had spoken of making a fresh start and the 62-year-old coach was part of Chovanec's coaching team.

Berger claimed the FA's top brass were "not the men for the job", prompting Repka to vouch support. Both speak nostalgically about the old atmosphere in the national side and the support they felt from former supremo Frantisek Chvalovsky.

It is even suggested that Chvalovsky, who is awaiting trial for fraud, could be behind the players' self-induced exile and his beleaguered predecessor, Jan Obst, has announced he will be contacting Repka through lawyers to find out who has been casting aspersions about him.

The rumour is that Obst and general secretary Petr Fousek pulled strings to prevent Lennart Johanssen visiting Chvalovsky during the Uefa president's visit to Prague last year.

Another controversial figure in the new set-up is Sparta Prague chairman Vlastimil Kostal, whose new function does not even have a job title.

The businessman was placed in charge of Sparta when German publishing giants Vltava Labe Presse bought the club three years ago. And he now has great influence at the football federation.

His responsibilities extend to direct contact with the dressing-room and it is there that Berger claims matters have taken a dive. "What Patrik Berger said is far removed from reality," Kostal retorted.

The Sparta boss went on: "Repka announced that he was quitting the national team at a time when he knew he was facing suspension for several matches. Berger announced it now, even though his fitness problems meant we weren't counting on him anyway."

While some fans share the view that it is the football federation's fault, others have not spared Berger derision and there is no indication that Vladimir Smicer, Pavel Srnicek, Karel Poborsky or any other surviving members of the Euro 96 squad will follow him into exile.

The man caught in the crossfire is Bruckner and further aggravation will surely follow if his team does not perform.

Winning last month's Tournament of Four in Cyprus was a good start, but the game in Wales next week will be crucial for Bruckner if he wants to start the road to Portugal on the right footing.

Match Report

Old Trafford literally was the Theatre of Dreams for wonderful, warrior-like West Ham as the Manchester United nightmare continued for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Jermain Defoe's 64th minute header gave Hammers a deserved first league win at the home of the champions since August 1986, while the Red Devils' sixth defeat of the season saw them slump down to ninth place, 11 points off leaders Liverpool and almost certainly out of the title race.

After securing that last-gasp draw against Aston Villa in midweek, West Ham had come into this tough test unchanged, while confident United made three switches from the side that had so comprehensively seen off Boavista in the Champions League.

Young defender John O'Shea plus Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Luke Chadwick came in for Laurent Blanc, eleven-goal Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Ł28million Juan Sebastien Veron following the Reds' 3-0 victory over the Portuguese champions.

Replicating Sir Alex Ferguson's 4-4-2 line-up, Glenn Roeder did tinker with his midfield as Trevor Sinclair and Don Hutchison took respective wide left and right berths, while the youthful flair of Joe Cole and Michael Carrick were asked to stand toe-to-toe against Roy Keane and Nicky Butt. And, like the entire West Ham side, they did not disappoint.

Certainly, the Hammers gave as good as they got during an opening first period that saw most of the activity taking place in the United half. Indeed, on 15 minutes Defoe came within a whisker of silencing Old Trafford as Fabien Barthez plucked Sebastien Schemmel's cross off his head and then the under-fire French 'keeper was forced to palm away Paolo Di Canio's low 25-yarder for the first corner of the game.

Butt's frustrated scyth on the fleeing Cole earned the midfielder the first of eight yellow cards dispatched by referee Durkin, before Dwight Yorke and Keane lashed angled shots into the side-netting and David James produced the first of several fine stops by acrobatically clawing Scholes' 20-yarder out from under his right-hand angle.

Midway through the half, another crude lunge on Defoe then brought bookings for O'Shea and the protesting Keane to the disgust of the restless home support, who then saw an unmarked Sinclair send an overhead kick sailing over.

With the hard working Hammers still high on confidence, Schemmel then drilled Cole's sliced shot across the face of goal, prior to being cautioned for tripping Chadwick, but as United finally started to threaten in the closing stages, James kept it goalless, by bravely plucking the ball off Yorke's studs prior to fisting out Scholes' screamer and holding Butt's ten-yard volley.

Emerging for the second half, a more urgent United looked a totally different proposition as the soaring Scholes soon glanced Solskjaer's corner across the face of goal before volleying into the side-netting from the edge of the box, and after surviving vociferous cries against him for handball, Hutchison was then yellow-carded for felling Scholes.

While substitute David Beckham waited to make a grand entrance, the slippery Solskjaer forced James to save his low six-yarder as the roof looked all set to cave in on a dogged Hammers defence coming increasingly under pressure.

But, incredibly, the Red tide was turned when the visitors' first real attack of the half saw them take the lead on 64 minutes as Cole played in the overlapping Di Canio whose deep, looping cross was nodded home at the far post by Defoe.

While the celebrations of the ecstatic east enders mirrored those of last January's epic FA Cup win, the United response saw Scholes booked for chopping Carrick, while Andy Cole replaced Butt and Mikael Silvestre's header forced James into yet another brilliant full-length save.

An unpunished body check on Di Canio brought a yellow card for the irate Italian and after Gary Neville joined him in the book for upending Defoe, the Hammers' goal-scoring hero was then replaced by Titi Camara for a predictably frantic final ten minutes that saw an invincible James repel everything that United - including rush-goalie Barthez - could throw at him as Hammers held on for a memorable victory.

Minute-by-minute:

6 - Butt's dangerous cross from the left is cleared well by Dailly.

9 - Joe Cole has a speculative 25-yard shot charged down by a defender.

14 - Schemmel whips in a cross from the right that is held by Barthez.

17 - Di Canio's fierce drive from the edge of the area is tipped round the post by Barthez.

18 - Butt booked for a foul on Cole.

21 - Silvestre turns Carrick in the area but fires his shot into the side-netting.

23 - Scholes collects the ball in space and unleashes a powerful drive that is destined for the top corner until James brilliantly tips it round the post.

25 - O'Shea booked for foul on Defoe.

25 - Keane booked for dissent.

29 - Di Canio's chip beats the offside trap and finds Sinclair in space but the midfielder hastily lashes a first-time volley over the bar.

35 - Cole finds Sinclair, whose shot is deflected wide for a corner.

36 - Cole's miscued shot falls kindly to Schemmel, whose fierce drive whistles just inches wide of the far post.

40 - Schemmel booked for a foul on Chadwick.

42 - Scholes shot is well parried by James and then cleared by Cole.

Added time: 2 minutes.

Half-time: Manchester United 0 West Ham 0.

Second half:

49 - Solskjaer's corner is headed just wide by Scholes from eight yards out.

51 - Di Canio's dangerous cross from the left is narrowly missed by Hutchison.

55 - Hutchison booked for a foul on Scholes.

59 - Substitute for Manchester United, Beckham replaces Chadwick.

59 - Beckham's cross is headed wide by Yorke.

60 - Di Canio releases Sinclair on the left but the England man's defence-splitting pass finds Defoe in an offside position.

64 - GOAL! Hammers take a deserved lead as excellent work by Cole finds Di Canio on the left.. The Italian cuts inside before delivering a deep cross that is met by Defoe, who powers his header past Barthez. Manchester United 0 West Ham 1.

65 - Scholes booked for foul on Carrick.

68 - Substitute for Manchester United, Andy Cole replaces Butt.

73 - James pulls off a superb save from Silvestre's close range header.

74 - From Beckham's cross, Solskjaer's header is again kept out by James.

76 - Di Canio booked for dissent.

81 - Substitute for Manchester United, Fortune replaces Yorke.

82 - Gary Neville booked for foul on Defoe.

83 - Substitute for West Ham, Camara replaces Defoe.

85 - Beckham's free-kick sails just wide of the far post.

89 - Silvestre's low cross is bravely held by James.

Added-time: 4 minutes.

Di Canio: Set the standard

Ipswich 2-3 West Ham
Hreidarsson 63
Holland 90 Di Canio 21
Kanoute 72
Defoe 90
FA Barclaycard Premiership

Goals from Paolo Di Canio, Freddie Kanoute and Jermain Defoe gave West Ham their first away win for eight months against Ipswich Town.

Once the Italian had given the visitors the half-time advantage, George Burley's men were given a brief glimmer of hope through Hermann Hreidarsson's equaliser, but it was the Icelander who inadvertently deflected Kanoute's strike past his own keeper.

Substitute Defoe sealed the victory in the final minute, before Matt Holland capped the afternoon's entertainment with a cracking, if ultimately futile, second for Ipswich in injury-time.

West Ham arrived at Portman Road having shipped 12 goals in their previous two Premiership away games, while their hosts, without a league win since August, gave a debut to Thomas Gaardsoe in the centre of their defence in the absence of John McGreal.

But there was little the Denmark Under-21 international or his colleagues could do as The Hammers went in front midway through the pening period with a goal that oozed quality.

The ball was worked in from the right flank via Michael Carrick, through Freddie Kanoute and and Don Hutchison. The latter's pass sprang di Canio into the box and the Italian finished sweetly across Sereni into the far corner.

Shaka Hislop seemed to draw inspiration from the return of David James to the bench as he produced two fine one-handed stops - one from Martijn Reuser's 25 yard free-kick and the other, equally impressive, as he recovered from slippage to scoop away Chris Makin's downward header.

Otherwise, as far as Glenn Roeder was concerned, the defence which had shipped 12 goals in their last two away games looked reassuringly solid, and the threat on the break was always there with both Hutchison and Kanoute sending free headers wide.

Ipswich threw on Sixto Peralta in the second period, but despite plenty of possession, the ball would not run for them in the final third - until just past the hour mark.

Mark Venus' free-kick from the left was palmed out by Hislop - and bounced off the thigh of Hreidarsson into the back of the net.

The Hammers countered and Michael Carrick rattled the goalframe from 25 yards before Sereni saved well from Kanoute, who had been played in by Nigel Winterburn. But the Frenchman was not to be denied.

With 20 minutes remaining, Hutchison's driving run from the center circle set up Kanoute eight yards out for the Hammers' second, and Defoe coolly tucked home the third as he raced clear through the middle.

Holland's late 30-yard strike was as sweet as you like, if ultimately pointless.

Three wins on the spin for West Ham; Pressure on Glenn Roeder? What pressure. No doubt he will happily advise Burley as he contemplates a record of just one win in eleven.

Kanouté sinks Saints

Gerry Cox at Upton Park
Sunday October 21, 2001
The Observer

Glenn Roeder will sleep easier this weekend than Stuart Gray, his opposite number, as Southampton's miserable run continued.
Freddie Kanouté scored with two second-half headers to ensure Roeder gets a stay of execution, and the pressured manager can point to his side's unbeaten home record with some pride, after wins over Newcastle and Southampton and a draw with Leeds. But Gray's position must be in some doubt now, with away supporters jeering him and calling for action from Rupert Lowe, the club's chairman.

The first half saw both teams looking nervous, disjointed and lacking confidence. Having suffered comprehensive defeats last week - Southampton at home to Arsenal, West Ham thrashed at Blackburn - you would not expect to see them buzzing with bright ideas, but only the most pessimistic would have predicted such a listless display.

Paul Jones was the busier keeper, tipping away two near-post shots from Kanouté and his compatriot Laurent Courtois in the early stages. Jones was caught out in the 13th minute when he charged out of his area ŕ la Barthez in an effort to dispossess Paolo Di Canio, but the West Ham striker ended up looking more foolish after taking the ball past the keeper and then shooting wide of the unguarded goal.

Trevor Sinclair, who was booed by home supporters after requesting a transfer last week, volleyed wide and Don Hutchison did the same soon afterwards.

Southampton did not offer much in response apart from a header by James Beattie that flew over the bar and another by defender Tahar El Khalej that was saved by Shaka Hislop following a corner.

West Ham were better after the break, playing with more purpose and urgency, especially through Sinclair on the right. But the breakthrough came from the other wing, following a quickly taken free-kick from Nigel Winterburn. The former Arsenal defender exchanged passes with Courtois before skipping past his marker and delivering an inswinging cross straight to the head of Kanouté, who powered the ball past Jones from close range.

The goal gave West Ham - and those supporters who had booed them from the field at half-time - renewed optimism, and Sinclair's low cross was almost directed into his own net by Claus Lundekvam.

When Gray decided to replace Marian Pahars with winger Stuart Ripley in the 75th minute, disgruntled Saints fans booed and chanted: 'You don't know what you're doing'.

Shortly afterwards, Kanouté scored again to put the result beyond doubt. Sinclair started the move, running in from the wing to force a save from Jones. The ball broke to Di Canio, whose shot hit the underside of the bar, but as it bounced out, Kanouté headed it into the back of the net, again from close range.

It was not a great performance from West Ham, but they are still unbeaten at home, have moved up to 15th in the table and are more likely to have the same manager this time next week than Southampton.

GLENN'S DELIGHT
20 Oct 2001 18:25

Hammers boss Glenn Roeder has expressed his delight at seeing his team bounce back from last week's humiliating defeat at Blackburn Rovers by securing a 2-0 victory over Southampton to maintain their unbeaten home record at Upton Park this season.
Glenn said afterwards: "I'm very pleased for the club and the players, and especially the supporters. They have been really good.

"We've now got to keep working hard, but we must also enjoy these victories.

"We had some good words 15 minutes before kick-off and I asked the lads to show some bottle - a good East End phrase!

"Even Tomas Repka knew what I was talking about, because football is a universal language.

"The first half wasn't much of a spectacle, it was a bit tense. There was an edginess but we still tried to play football.

"The previous two matches have been excruiating but it turned out okay today and now we have got to put in another quality performance against Chelsea on Wednesday."

Di Canio blasts 'weak' Hammers

Simon Burnton
Tuesday October 16, 2001
The Guardian

The aftershock from West Ham's 7-1 weekend mauling at the hands of Blackburn Rovers continued yesterday when Paolo di Canio used the club's official website to launch a swingeing attack on his team's performance.
The Italian has never been known for diplomacy, but even by his standards the holds were particularly unbarred. "You have to look at your face in the mirror and ask if you are a true professional, a true footballer, or the opposite," he said. "I don't want to blame my team-mates but there are players who didn't show their quality and commitment. This is not possible in the Premiership, especially at a glorious team like West Ham.

"The manager is intelligent and I think he will now be tougher with the players. Now we have the time to change, but if we carry on this way we will have a big, big problem. We have to commit 100% because only in this way can you get out from our position.

"I have played for 16 years at the top level and I run for 90 minutes," he continued. "Some players who haven't shown their quality yet play for 20 or 30 minutes. Either they are not ready for the Premiership or they don't have strong characters. In both cases we have to change. Only if we realise how shit we are can we improve.

"Maybe people will say I have to shut my mouth and play better and work hard, but even if I had scored three goals we would still have lost."

The only player to avoid Di Canio's wrath was Tomas Repka, the Czech defender who was sent off in the second half. "Repka was the only good player on the pitch for us," he said. "The referee was happy to send him off."

The outburst will have done little to ease the mind of West Ham's under-fire manager Glenn Roeder, who yesterday also saw the manager of his first club, Leyton Orient, resign after a run of four consecutive defeats.

Tommy Taylor had been at Brisbane Road for five years, reaching two Third Division play-off finals in that time, but has decided to let someone else handle the pressure. "Obviously recent results have not gone well and I thought it was time to bring in a new manager," he said.

Taylor blamed his players' attitude for the slump. "A few of them can't hack it when things go wrong. I've said to them that if someone else does come in he'd ship most of them out because they're too young, too small or not giving 100%." The first team coach Paul Brush has been appointed caretaker.

Dundee have signed Crystal Palace's Chinese international defender Fan Zhiyi for a fee in the region of Ł300,000 following talks in China over the weekend. Zhiyi has not played for Palace since August because of his country's World Cup qualifiers, the last of which is scheduled for Friday.

EMBARRASSED GLENN BEGS FOR MORE TIME

Glenn Roeder has pleaded with the West Ham board to give him time to try and halt the Hammers' slide towards relegation after their 7-1 humiliation at Blackburn.

The Upton Park boss, only appointed as Harry Redknapp's successor in the summer, admitted he was "embarrassed" by the thumping, but believes he can still turn West Ham around, even though they have slipped to just one place off the bottom.

"I hope I'm given more time," he said. "Believe me whether it is me or ultimately somebody else they won't have a magic wand to turn it round straight away.

"The club has been on a losing run now not just for this season, but for most of last season as well and just survived. Being quite honest we have put ourselves in a very unhealthy position already and it's certainly going to need men to pick the thread up in the next couple of games.

"But I can if other people can. I hope he doesn't mind me saying it, but remember Stan Ternent and Burnley losing 6-0 at home to Manchester City? There was a massive question make over his future, but he survived and now he's doing a brilliant job at the club just up the road.

"I hope I'm given time, but like for any other manager that's other people's decisions."

Roeder was distraight by the result, which means West Ham have conceded 12 goals in their last two games, but he claimed now was not the time to shout and scream at his players.

He added: "Straight after the game is no time to try and sort out what happened out there when emotions are running high. Everybody who was involved, the players and myself, are obviously embarrassed by a defeat like this.

"And when you are as angry as you can possibly be, I don't think you can always make the correct judgement. Tomorrow behind closed doors we will sit down with the players and have a heart-to-heart and see where we go.

Souness: Praised Dunn

"Today and in the defeat at Everton there were individual mistakes which were not acceptable at this level and if we carry on defending in the way we did today then we are going to be in serious trouble this season."

Blackburn midfielder David Dunn reflected on his dynamic display in the 7-1 pasting of West Ham, and said he would welcome the opportunity to play for England.

Sven Goran Eriksson was at Ewood Park to see Dunn score Rovers' second and perform superbly throughout on the left-hand side of midfield.

And the 21-year-old said afterwards: "I've said before, I'm happy to keep playing for England Under-21s. But if I get an England call-up that will be a bonus for me.

"The main thing is we've got a good team spirit here - the older and younger pros get on really well and that goes a long way," he continued.

Dunn's manager Graeme Souness was delighted with his showing, but lamented the fact that Italian striker Ciccio Grabbi's hard-working display had not yielded a goal.

"David's got the potential to be a top player - as a number of our young players have," he said.

"I felt sorry for Ciccio - again he's worked very hard and laid on a couple of goals and played a part in our victory. But he's not got a goal and that's what strikers want to see - their name on the scoresheet."

Souness spared athought for Hammers counterpart Glenn Roeder, and pointed out that the visitors had not got the rub of the green at crucial moments.

"I feel sorry for West Ham - at 3-1 they had two headers and if one of them had gone in it could have been a very different game.

"Who's to say what the score would have been if they'd got one of those headers - but it was our day today. We've been threatening to score a lot of goals - and we took our chances today."

Sinclair asks for transfer

Monday October 8, 2001

Trevor Sinclair has today asked for a transfer from Premiership strugglers West Ham.
Sinclair, part of last weekend's England squad, claims he has been disenchanted with life at Upton Park for some time.

"I feel that given the club's current state of transition following the change in manager and the sale of several key players, my ambitions at this stage of my career are more likely to be fulfilled elsewhere", he said in a statement.

"I have enjoyed my time at West Ham immensely and have established a wonderful relationship with the fans, to whom I am extremely grateful for their support.

"However, I think a fresh challenge as part of a new playing environment will help my performance level in this incredibly important season."

The former QPR winger has been linked with Sunderland, although news of his impending departure could alert Newcastle and Leeds.

Szóval GO HAMMERS!!!

JOE WOE - COURTOIS CONTENT
24 Sep 2001 15:16

Glenn Roeder will pick up the phone this week to give David Platt the bad news that Joe Cole will be missing from his England U21 squad to face Greece in a couple of weeks' time.
That will be the inevitable conclusion to be drawn as the club continue to search for a cure to Joe's niggly foot injury.
But it is not all bad news for Glenn, who admits the arrival of Laurent Courtois to the club has ensured he has a ready made replacement on the left while Joe is on the sidelines.
"Joe is having a few days off now and taking the weight off his foot that has been a problem for nine weeks," says Glenn.
"He had had five or six days away from the training ground and has rested his foot at home.
"Apparently he is feeling the same and it hasn't really improved; we will just have to wait and see.
"He is off to see another specialist later in the week to get another opinion.
"He will take the two scans with him to see if he sees something that we haven't, but we are pretty confident that what we have seen on the scans which is not showing anything untoward, and it will be the same.
"It is really a mystery that the pain hasn't come out of the foot.
"We are told that bone bruising can take a long time, though I don't think too much is known about it.
"But it is a pain he can't put up with, especially as it is on the right foot which he favours.
"It has disrupted his training to the detriment of when he plays for the team and I thought it was only right that I should bring him in, have a long chat with him, and take him out of the frame for the time being."
That will mean missing the Everton game and the subsequent international action.
The silver lining in the cloud for Glenn, however, is the 'coming of age' of Laurent Courtois following his full Premiership debut at the weekend.
"The way Laurent played certainly buys us a bit more time," admits Glenn.
"But I am keen to get get Joe Cole playing the way we know he can, because when he is at his best he is an exciting young player.
"I need to pick up the phone to David Platt earlier rather than later assuming Joe was more likely to be picked for the U21s than the seniors.
"I need to put him in the picture as early as I can that it is most unlikely that Joe will be available for the game against Greece."
Amongst the high profile signings of David James, Tomas Repka, and Don Hutchison, Laurent - and to a lesser extent Sebastien Schemmel, who had been on loan at the club anyway - slipped in to the club almost through the back door this summer.
But Sebastien's consistency and now Laurent's performance against Newcastle mean that the two Frenchmen are really starting to get noticed beyond Upton Park - and prove that Glenn knows a bargain.
"Everyone came out of the game with credit, and it easy to forget Laurent Courtois because he wasn't a high profile signing," he says.
"He came to us on a free transfer on the recommendation of Fredi Kanoute; I thought he had an outstanding debut and he really contributed to the win.
"I was delighted for him because he is a lovely boy, smashing to work with.
"I signed him, but I would certainly give the credit to Fredi for discovering him if you want, because I didn't know anything about him.
"Fredi came in and asked if he could train with us for a few weeks and gave me a video of him playing for Toulouse, which I liked.
"He earned his contract on the merit of his performances in the friendly games.
"I will have to ask Fredi if there are any more - perhaps he can be a talent spotter for us as well!
"The reason that he knew about Laurent was because they were both in the same youth team at Lyon, so I guess he used to knock a few crosses in off that left peg for Fredi to score.
"It is a gamble in respect of the fact we didn't have to lay out any transfer money but it was a gamble worth taking.
"I once signed a player for Ł10,000 - Kevin Phillips - and for that money it wasn't a gamble.
"All we have done is given Laurent an opportunity to play Premiership football; it is up to him to take that opportunity, and yesterday he went a small way to taking it.
"He certainly didn't let himself or us down, and on that performance I would say he could certainly hold his own in the Premiership."
The bigger signings are at an end for the time being, admits Glenn, who explains:
"We have made three significant buys after all, so there probably won't be any more of those at the moment.
"But it doesn't mean we stop looking at players, and drawing up lists in all positions, because at some stage we will want to strengthen the squad as well.
"Sometimes you have to look short term but we take the view now that we want to look more long term.
"And when you do that you are looking at the age of the players you are bringing in.
"But it doesn't mean that we won't look at the occasional short term player to make sure the squad keeps going and that we are doing OK."
