Ajax – RKC will not enter in the books like on of the agreeable matches ever played in the Arena. The ingredients for a nice match weren’t also not available. A half fulled Arena, a cold Thursdayevening and a „new“ pitch where the players couldn’t play on without falling on it. The circumstances were getting worser when also Chris Chivu just before the first half ended, has to leaved because of an injurie. This didn’t also increase the attractive of the match.
The peoples may have expect more of this „subtopmatch“: The fourth place on the ranking was the target for both sides. But the expectations weren’t maked real because it was a disorderly match what also happened because of the bad pitch. The players felt one after one because there wasn’t grip on the 23st pitch in the Arena.
It look like it was become despite the problems an easy evening for Ajax. Just before the ten minutes ended scored „daddy“ Machlas his first goal. Machlas was balancing on the brim of offside when he got the ball of the feet of Wamberto. The Greek hold his head cool and pushed the ball with control in the goal.
Ajax couldn’t manage the job in an early way and must seen even how RKC attackers missed chanches. Rick Hoogendorp and Yuri Cornelisse run op against time after time on the good keeping Grim and also one time on Tim de Cler. The finally man of the match took the ball of the goalline.
This all happened in the first half. On the end of this first half was there a scary moment in the match for Ajax. Chivu turned his knee in a bad way and has to leave the pitch stumbled Tom Sier has to replace him and so Tim de Cler moved to the heart of the defence. Siers performance was good but with the result that Ajax didn’t have a „real“ defender in the dug out anymore.
In the second half is the job done early for the team from Waalwijk. Again a good attack of Ajax. The ball was going by the stops of De Cler en Bergdolmo to the endstation Nikos Machlas.
The Greek hasn’t delay like an obstacle and shoot the ball from the turn and so he passes Van Dijk.
Adriaanse could sit down on an easier way in his dug out and he saw how Ajax finish the match. Not with beautifal combinationwork because the game was still shabby without radiation. Machlas was the man with the biggest chances by a header and a ball against the post. Ajax was needing inspiration and Adriaanse maked that happened by an double change.
Van der Meyde and Arveladze could demonstrate their arttricks and Wamberto and Witschge has to leave the pitch. Witschge took this to literally and was going with a dissappointing feeling to the dressingroom. With this action he violated the rule of Adriaanse which is telling that changed players obliged have to go to the dug out to see the rest of the match. The midfielder has also reasons to be disappointed because his come back after 2 months of a knee injurie wasn’t so great.
The changes weren’t disappointed their manager. Van der Meyde slalomed like he was Alberto Tomba in his best days through the defence of RKC Waalwijk and so he gives Shota Arveladze a good chance to score. The Georgian takes this opportunity with both hands and he curved the ball with a lot of feelings in the rightcorner. These beautifal goal was shrill contrast with the performance that Ajax showed. But Ajax and everybody have to be just happy with a 3-0 victory on a good team.
Sunday is it again footballtime in the Arena. Then comes Heerenveen on visite. Adriaanse has difficult choises refer to his line-up. Could the possible loss of Chivu take care and will Rafaël van der Vaart get the preference of Witschge? Sunday we will get the answers.
Next match: Ajax-SC Heerenveen (December 03).
Line-up:
AFC Ajax :
Grim; Bergdolmo, Pasanen, Chivu (30. Sier), De Cler; Winter, Galasek, Witschge (63. Van der Meyde); Van der Gun, Machlas, Wamberto (63. Arveladze).
RKC :
Van Dijk; Lamey (82. Peppinck), Nascimento, Van den Berg, Kalezic; Gudjohnsson, Petrovic, De Graef
(66. Human); Cornelisse
, Hoogendorp, Van Dinteren (73. Lanckohr).
And again Ajax has won itself three points in an away match! In Breda NAC was beaten 0-3, in a far from impressing match. The almost 16.000 on the stands saw that Pasanen scored two goals, in the extra-time Arveladze scored Ajax' third goal. We think it's illustrative that two corners and a defender plus a very late goal from a real striker made Ajax win.
Ajax was under heavy attack in the first 15 minutes of the duel. In those minutes NAC should have scored, but a fine-playing Fred Grim kept his goal clean. And that stayed the whole match the same. On the other side of the pitch Grim's collegue Babos had lots of problems. After 17 minutes Petri Pasanen scored out of a corner by Wamberto with his head a nice goal, 0-1. Babos was without a chance on this header.
After 50 minutes Ajax made the second goal. Again out of a corner. Babos could not get hold of the ball, stomped it back into the field and there was Petri Pasanen who kicked the ball hard and high behind the unlucky NAC-goalie, 0-2. The first half further brought Ajax only yellow cards from referee Bossen, for De Cler, Ikedia and Gálŕsek. At the NAC-side only Feher received the same card.
In the second half Ajax was continous the stronger team. But that didn't lead to goals at first. Although for example Cedric van der Gun should have scored when he was for a near-empty NAC-goal but Cedric shot the ball high over. Coach Co Adriaanse replaced his whole attack in the second half. Van der Gun came for Nikos Machlas, Ikedia had to go in favour of Andy van der Meyde and in the 75th minute Shota Arveladze came into the match for Wamberto, Shota had again a couple of minutes to show his possible class... And what a coincidence that it was Arveladze who scored the third Ajax-goal! In the extra time Shota scored the 0-3. By the way: an earlier Ajax-goal was blown away by Bossen because of off-side by the Georgian striker. So he had to do something good.
A reasonably easy away-victory of Ajax. And three points gained again, useful three points too when you consider the fact that NEC lost 1-3 against Feijenoord. Ajax is now on the fourth place in the KPN Eredivisie. With coming Sunday another awaymatch, now against FC Utrecht, on the schedule a real windfall.
Line-up:
AFC Ajax :
Grim; Bergdolmo, Pasanen, Chivu, De Cler

"With ten men towards defeat
FC Utrecht - AFC Ajax
2-1
KPN Eredivisie, Sunday November 26, 2000, 14:30 hrs, Stadion Nieuw Galgenwaard.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ajax has failed to keep up the good record of awaymatches, against FC Utrecht Ajax lost 2-1. With ten players. Fred Grim was sent off in the 18th minute by referee Luinge, because the Ajax keeper had taken down Gluscevic in the penalty box. A discutable decision of the referee, but luckily enough the given penalty was shot next to the post by Dave van de Bergh. Moreover Lobont replaced Grim as keeper, what was a blast to Shota Arveladze who had to leave the match so that Lobont could come in.
Surprisingly Ajax was even with ten players better than the hometeam, but could not score the oh so important goals. The attack was with Wamberto and van der Gun just too light against the robust FC Utrecht defenders. Who had, with Stijn Vreven, the dirtiest player in the Dutch Eredivisie in their midst. Vreven left the field after 90 minutes with just a yellow card, where the red card would have been more honest. Stijn thinks that a football field resembles a boxing ring.
And it was, of all people, Vreven who gave the pass from which Robbemond could score the 1-0 in the 35th minute. Lobont was without a chance. A dissapointment for the better playing Ajax. 1-0 was also the score at teabreak.
Co Adriaanse changed the team a bit during the break. Aron Winter was taken out in favour of Hersi, the striker of Ajax-2. And again a light weight, who couldn't do a thing against the Utrecht defenders. Fortunatly Petri Pasanen is in a very good form. The defender from Finland scored his third goal in two matches in the 57th minute. Again a header which brought the ball behind Wapenaar, 1-1.
Ajax, alas, couldn't make more goals, it was FC utrecht who sent Ajax home with a defeat. Again Vreven passed the ball towards Gluscevic, who had no mercy with Ajax or Lobont alone and shot the 2-1 in. A painfull defeat, it was a bit unnecessary. But on the other hand, playing with ten against eleven players is not easy. Luinge should have been consistent by sending Vreven off too. The referee has put a very big mark on this very nice match, with his sometimes strange decisions.
