Trump, McConnell and the Republicans in the U.S. Senate are poised to make their biggest mistake in the 2020 election. They think that recklessly rushing a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court through the approval process will play well to their base.
They forget that their base has women in it. Women who can have an unplanned pregnancy. Support for choice in this country has grown. In some polls it’s at 60%. Among women it’s at 75%. Women and men on the Democratic side overwhelmingly want to keep abortion legal. And since Justice Ginsburg’s passing last night, EVERYONE has woken up. There may still be an “enthusiasm gap” when it comes to the former VP, but going back to the dark ages of back alley abortions? Well, the electorate is as charged as they’ve been since, um... all summer? Threaten us with overturning Roe v. Wade during the largest uprising in US history? During a once-in-a-century pandemic?Wrong move.
Make no mistake about it, though. This is war. And it must be fought like a war (minus the physical violence). The other side is already organized. They’re rallying the troops. They’ve got their Supreme Court nominee already identified. McConnell already has every Senator under his thumb in less than 12 hours. Me, I’m still typing this Facebook post.
We will not win unless we are willing to drop what we are doing and fight like hell and show this Republican Party that they need to stand down NOW — otherwise we will crush them. Ha. Listen to me! WE don’t crush them — THEY crush US! They are liars and hypocrites and enthusiastic misogynists and they win most every time. In this war of filling the Ginsburg seat, they have a simple, clear mission and one major goal: To force women to have babies. To lord over women’s reproductive organs. They believe they’ve just been handed a gift with the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They have tried unsuccessfully for 47 years to win back their control over women. They have been on a crusade and now the day has come where they may once again be able to dictate to all women what they can and cannot do with their ovaries. They mean business. And if we don’t mean business, then we might as well just let Orwell or Margaret Atwood write the rest of our story. Because America is over.
But no! I refuse to give in. Here’s what we must do beginning RIGHT NOW — literally in the next few minutes:
1. The next 72 hours of public opinion will determine who wins this war. The outcry must be massive and immediate and loud. Spontaneous protests and demonstrations must occur everywhere. Don’t wait for anyone to organize this! YOU MUST ORGANIZE IT! Call/text/write everyone you know right now. “Meet us tonight at the Federal Building/Courthouse/City Hall.” Drive to your local U.S. Senator’s office with homemade signs and start screaming bloody murder. Call the media. Do it again tomorrow. 1pm everyone! And if you live within a 3-hour drive of DC, go join the growing massive crowd there standing vigil outside the Supreme Court. This is OUR Court — it’s not the Men’s Court, it’s not the Republican Court, it’s not the Gun Owners Court — it’s OUR COURT. Back off, all of you, and then f*** off. We are the majority. The majority of this country is NOT Republican, the majority is NOT male, and 77% don’t own a goddamned gun. Your days of running OUR country are over. Here’s the promise we make to you just 45 days from getting our country back: When we’re in charge, you can keep your guns, you can keep your penises, and you can vote for Republicans to your heart's content in OUR non-gerrymandered, voter-protected country. Rule One: None of your grubby hands will ever be controlling any women’s bodies. Go find a new fetish or hobby.
2. If social media was ever meant to do anything worthwhile, this is its epic, historic moment. Today and tomorrow, post something every hour on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Tell others to do the same. Make this huge. Make every Republican scared shitless if they think they can get away with this. Let them feel the tsunami of the internet — 100 million of us rising up and ready to drown their pathetic careers.
3. Nancy Pelosi and the House Democratic leadership must block the Continuing Resolution next week that funds the government and just shut the whole damn thing down until Mitch McConnell pledges in writing to put no Supreme Court nominee in front of the Senate until after Inauguration Day.
4. Every one one of us must melt down the Senate switchboard every single day this week. Call your state’s two Senators (even now on the weekend - leave a voice message), then call the seven Republicans who are possibly “on the fence” (Collins, Murkowski, Romney, Grassley, Gardner, Roberts, Alexander) — and let them have it! 202-225-3121. This is crucial, even if your Senator is a Dem. 202-225-3121.
5. Senate Democratic leaders must grind Senate business to a screeching halt — using every single tactic in the book to stall, upend, block, bottle up, clog up and gum up the works so that no Republican business can get done. Chuck Schumer must lead the charge. If he is unwilling to immediately draw his virtual sword and go to war, then New Yorkers must publicly vow to primary him in 2022. We will no longer tolerate wimps, wusses or traitors in the Democratic Party. AOC started the purge — we will finish it.
6. Is it time for another Women’s March on DC? I’m assuming those in charge are cooking something up. I’m in if they are. You, too? More on that later.
So there - this is a start. We can do this. But we must act now. The majority of Americans are with us. Why not win for once?!
