Love at first sight for QPR and Paladini By Tony Francis Telegraph (Filed: 18/10/2004)
There are several ways of looking at Queens Park Rangers. When he was knee-high to a gobstopper, Bill Power got a tantalising view from the second-floor window of a council maisonette directly opposite the stadium. It's where he grew up. Rumour has it that mum and dad applied for a rent rebate when the Rs hit a bad patch. Bill is the chairman now. Made his money selling software to the military.
On Sunday morning, Ian Holloway, the manager, tried to put things into perspective from the saddle of a bay gelding as it cantered around the paddock. Very Clint Eastwood. Or should it be the Lone Ranger? The previous day's 1-0 triumph over West Ham made it seven straight wins. They'll be challenging Arsenal's record at this rate. And this for a team who couldn't trap a bag of cement at the start of the season.
Holloway rides to clear his mind, soothe his natural inclination to rant at the fourth official and work out how Rangers are supposed to keep it up with one of the smallest squads in the championship. You can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
Trying not to gloat in the company of Sir Trevor Brooking, QPR's majority shareholder contented himself with a post-match Shiraz and a couple of vol-au-vents. His name, Gianni Paladini, the ultimate poacher-turned-gamekeeper. From his base in Solihull he supervised, among others, the careers of Salvatore `Toto' Schillaci, Benito Carbone and Fabrizio Ravanelli. Then he got sick of being an agent, tired of the public opprobrium heaped on his breed. He thought about throwing in his lot with Birmingham City. When that backfired, Paladini and Ravanelli between them planned to take over Derby County. Another blank.
Queens Park Rangers happened by chance. Paladini professes no spiritual affinity or ancestral connection. It was love at first sight. "You don't have to know a woman for 40 years before you take her to bed." Very Italian. Or should it be Swedish? Most of his family were at Loftus Road for the big London confrontation. Daughter Katerina, son-in-law Kostas and grandson Gianluca, the club mascot. They thought Gianni was mad to invest Ł750,000 in a club with limited potential. It seemed an overreaction to the pensions crisis. Any port in a storm. Now they've revised their opinions. Matthew Rose's sublime first-half goal lifts Rangers into third place, a point behind the leaders, Wigan. With the club owning the freehold of the stadium too, Ł750,000 begins to look like a bargain.
But beware. Unravelling QPR's finances is akin to playing underwater chess blindfolded. When Paladini asked a few basic questions like: "Why did we borrow Ł10million?", he was told to go and play with the traffic. Apparently the old regime came out of administration with twice the debt they had going in. Against the odds, they achieved promotion with a defence built around a human lighthouse called Danny Shittu, bought from Charlton Athletic by a QPR fan and his two sons, can you believe? They paid Ł250,000 for a player Holloway now values in the Ł3 million category. If QPR were to sell him, let's hope the Winton family get their money back. In the meantime, Danny's been immortalised in song: Chim chimeny, Chim chimeny Chim, chim, cher-oo Who needs Sol Campbell When we've got Shittu?
Back at the Ponderosa, Holloway's tensions dissolved as he guided his mount over a series of small jumps. He was realistic: "We're playing with the accelerator on the floor. There's nothing in reserve. If the players carry on like this we've got to reward them or lose them. It's all about finances. Dunga is more important than me."
Oh yes, Carlos Dunga. I'd almost forgotten him. The former Brazil World Cup captain is in the mix as well. A pal of Paladini's and an international ambassador with a double brief: to spread the Brazilian gospel while recruiting youngsters for QPR's academy. This week he's in China, next week Japan. I'm sure it will all make sense one day.
Azt hiszem most enyém a League One.
QPR v West Ham H, 5 Sunderland v Millwall H, 5 Bristol City v Hull D, 3 Luton v Huddersfield H, 5 Boston United v Wycombe H, 5 Yeovil v Macclesfield H, 5
Nekem a kellemes meglepi a Queens Park,a csalódás a Wolves és a Kidderminster Harriers.
A Wolverhamptonról nem is tudom, mit mondjak,ma estére minden valószínűség szerint kieső helyre kerülünk a másodosztályban.Szégyen.Tegnap egyébként kihagytuk az 5. büntetőnket is az idényben. :-((

Valaki jelentkezik a League One-ra? Holnap legalább késő estig jó lenne ha összeállna a szelvény azokra gondolva, akik nem olvassák minden nap a fórumot. Így biztos lesz idejük szombatig. Vagy más vélemény?
