Tennis Channel to Air Andre Agassi Retrospective Sept. 8 Tuesday, September 4, 2007
Tennis Channel will celebrate the one-year anniversary of Andre Agassi’s 2006 US Open retirement with a look at the tennis legend’s adventurous life and 21-year career. Agassi: Between the Lines will premiere Saturday, Sept. 8, at 10 p.m. ET, following that day’s US Open women’s final and one day prior to the men’s championship.
The retrospective follows a month of Tennis Channel Saturdays that have been devoted to the tennis star, with a classic Agassi match each Saturday night from Aug. 11 to the documentary’s premiere.
Through original interviews with the two-time US Open champion, combined with playing footage and photographs from his most memorable matches, the one-hour documentary will look at Agassi’s start as junior-circuit golden boy through his days as the “image is everything guy” to the player he is today.
“Our goal was to create the most authentic biography of Andre that’s ever been done,” says Laura Hockridge, executive producer for Tennis Channel. “We wanted this to be different than other sports retrospectives, to go well beyond just his career.”
Highlights of the program include observations from both Agassi and long-time rival Pete Sampras on their career-defining matches throughout the 1990s; a riveting play-by-play of his 1999 French Open victory while nursing a shoulder injury and simultaneously dealing with divorce; and a look into what he humorously calls his “borderline stalking” courtship of his wife, tennis superstar Steffi Graf.
The documentary also has comments from competitor and contemporary Jim Courier, Hall of Fame commentator John McEnroe, tennis expert Bud Collins, coach Brad Gilbert, trainer Gil Reyes, tennis academy founder Nick Bollettieri, commentator Mary Carillo, Sports Illustrated’s Gary Smith, and agent and friend Perry Rogers, among others.
In all, Agassi won eight Grand Slam singles championships, and is the only player in tennis’ Open Era to have won every Grand Slam singles title, the Tennis Masters Cup, Davis Cup and an Olympic gold medal
FRANCE'S Fabrice Santoro equaled Andre Agassi's all-time Grand Slam record for total events played, making his 61st appearance in a first-round US Open victory today (AEST).
Santoro, a 34-year-old veteran ranked 43rd in the world, matched the mark set by eight-time Gand Slam champion Agassi at last year's US Open, the American legend's emotional farewell tournament.
Santoro opened with a 6-1 6-7 (8-10) 6-2 6-1 victory over Spain's Albert Montanes, to book a second-round date with American James Blake, the No.6 seed, who defeated compatriot Michael Russell 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
While he gets points for determination, Santoro has not tasted Grand Slam success. His only trip beyond the fourth round came when he reached the quarter-finals of last year's Australian Open.
Santoro, playing in his 37th consecutive Grand Slam since missing Wimbledon in 1998, has been beaten in the first-round 24 times, the second-round (20), the third-round (12) times and the fourth-round (three). Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman, who will face Britain's Andy Murray in the second-round of his 56th Slam appearance, is Santoro's nearest rival among active players.
Bjorkman, 35, is one start shy of sharing third on the all-time list with Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Michael Chang and Wayne Ferreira.
