Lynyrd Skynyrd at 30
Lynyrd Skynyrd has endured, despite all odds, through death and disaster, as the signature rock group of America's working people. It is no accident that any popular contemporary band that uses electric guitars owes a huge debt to Skynyrd, a debt almost always freely acknowledged. Musicians as diverse as Kid Rock, Metallica and Travis Tritt pledge allegiance to the Skynyrd sound, and a new wave of hard rocking youngsters values Lynyrd Skynyrd above all else.
Skynyrd's ability to constantly rekindle its creative fires following tragedy is a testament to the indomitable spirit that has surrounded the band since its inception, and has largely defined Lynyrd Skynyrd over the years. The legendary singer/songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and vocalist Cassie Gaines died in the infamous 1977 plane crash that ended the band's initial run. Guitarist Allen Collins survived the plane crash only to suffer paralysis and, eventually, death in a tragic car accident. And most recently the band lost bassist Leon Wilkeson, who died during the making of Vicious Cycle. Yet once again Lynyrd Skynyrd found the determination to continue working as well as a way to perpetuate its greatness, and Vicious Cycle may well be the greatest Skynyrd album since the band's classic lineup.
"It's been a long time comin'," philosophized Ronnie's younger brother, Johnny Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd's latest offering. Having taken over the duty of lead vocalist in 1987, Johnny has grown into the role of fronting the band so well that Lynyrd Skynyrd has truly become the central part of his identity.
"We've hit on a combination of old style Skynyrd, with new style Skynyrd, with commercial Skynyrd," Johnny said with a laugh. "We've got that hard rockin' country thing going full blast on this one."
Lynyrd Skynyrd has always been an arsenal of determination, articulation, personality and, above all else, guitar prowess. With Gary Rossington, one of the greatest guitarists in rock history, Lynyrd Skynyrd's stellar guitar lineup also features Blackfoot's Rickey Medlocke and the Outlaws' Hughie Thomasson. Keyboardist Billy Powell contributes melodic touches that add a stark beauty to the band's sound. Drummer Michael Cartellone gives the rhythm section a thunderous kick.
Though Leon Wilkeson’s passing in July 2001 of natural causes was tragic and untimely, it is one element that furthers the meaning of the album’s title. Wilkeson was known for his huge sound and the outlandish collection of hats he wore on stage. “Mad Hatter" is the band's tribute to its fallen member.
"That's about brother Leon," singer Johnny Van Zant explained. "God broke the mold when he built him. He survived the plane crash and we always used to kid him, called him the Mad Hatter and the Cat in the Hat because he had nine lives."
Wilkeson had recorded a couple of tracks, “Lucky Man” and The Way,” for the album before he passed, and Skynyrd fans had heard him play the latter and “Funked Up” in live performance.
"We've done “Funked Up” and “The Way” live and they both got a great response," Johnny noted. "The people really loved “The Way.” They were coming up to us and saying they can't wait to hear it on record. The eerie thing is that the song talks about passing on to the other side and how things are so screwed up in general and it was the last song Leon played on.”
The band completed Vicious Cycle with a former bandmate of Thomasson's from the Outlaws, Ean Evans, on bass.
"Ean's a trouper," said Johnny. "He and Leon were good friends. Leon had a few problems toward the end and Ean would fill in for him when he couldn't make the gigs. Ean's one of us. He's from Mississippi. He's a talented guy and a great person. God bless Leon, he's gone now but he would have wanted us to keep going and we will."
Having come full circle through all the hardships -- death, illness, departure, disagreements, exhaustion -- that Lynyrd Skynyrd knows so well, they channeled their life experiences into powerful and emotive songs for this aptly named album. "Life's Lessons" offers pointed advice about self-assuredness and hindsight. "...You think you know it all/but you're heading for a fall/to make it back again/you'll have to crawl....when we look back and see what we've done will we be proud or ashamed....is this another life's lesson too late?" sings Johnny on the song.
On the flip side, not only does the band express the uncertainty of the cards life may deal a person, but also Lynyrd Skynyrd addresses free will in "Hell or Heaven.” Johnny noted, “You can choose your own hell, or heaven on earth. That hell could be drugs or it could be being married to the wrong woman or whatever. If you lay with dogs you're gonna get fleas."
From "Sweet Home Alabama" to "Saturday Night Special," Skynyrd always has been known for tackling controversial subjects head on, and the fierce "Dead Man Walking" is squarely in that tradition.
"We just love that groove," said Johnny. "It's old Skynyrd with new heavy guitars. Gary is just ripping on that one. It's about somebody doing a kid wrong, the parents finding out and avenging it with vigilante justice. It's hard to say you wouldn't do the same thing if you were in their place."
Similarly, "Jake" tells a story of a father's white-hot anger after catching his daughter and her beau in the throes of passion. The couple runs, but the angered, gun-waiving father catches up to the couple and fires the gun. Indeed someone dies, but it is the father, not Jake.
Another hot point addressed on Vicious Cycle is the brewing hostility between the U.S. and the Middle East: "Got our heads stuck in something overseas/Standin' ass deep in hypocrisy," read the lyrics on "The Way."
Not only focusing on tragedy and controversy, Lynyrd Skynyrd also draws on their blue collar roots for musical inspiration. They've always been known as one of the hardest working bands in history, having exploded onto the scene in the 1970’s and playing approximately 300 dates each year. Lynyrd Skynyrd doesn't know how to take it easy -- through any and all lumps life has offered Lynyrd Skynyrd, they have not given up or even slowed down.
Few bands have made as spectacular an entrance as did Skynyrd in 1973, and aside from their music, another distinguishing factor was Skynyrd's audience. While virtually all of the band's contemporaries were writing to a suburban people, Lynyrd Skynyrd fiercely promoted the values of its heritage, the values of America's workers. The band's hometown of Jacksonville truly was a blue collar town, and Ronnie, Donnie and Johnny Van Zant learned the value of hard work from family patriarch Lacy Van Zant. Ronnie was a master at articulating these values in Skynyrd's songs and Johnny has grown into the role so well that he's actually brought the group to another level. The new album is packed with working class anthems like "That's How I like It," "Pick'em Up," and "Sweet Mama."
"Our fans are country folks, they like the basics," Johnny explained. "They're not afraid of dirt, they know how to work with their hands. If you've got a good car and a good woman you can be happy. Life has gotten so complicated that a lot of people have lost sight of the fact that the simple things are the best things. We came from a basic family. Our father was a working man. Our mother was a housewife. We didn't live the high life. Sure, these days we buy our own cars, but we still live a basic life."
Johnny and Donnie collaborated on a powerful tribute to the family's roots with "Red, White & Blue," an unapologetic celebration of the American working class. "My hair's turning white, my neck's always been red, my collar's still blue," goes the chorus. In a wonderful nod to Merle Haggard that Ronnie would have loved, the boys pay tribute to their parents. "I've driven by the White House, but spent some time in jail/My momma cried, but still wouldn't pay my bail."
Skynyrd has always managed to balance its kickass party anthems with messages that offer solace against life's troubles and hope for a better future. "The Way" touches on an inspirational theme that ranks with one of the band's most enduring songs, "Free Bird."
Music has always carried Lynyrd Skynyrd through life's cycles, and the band aims for their album Vicious Cycle to reflect that and to do so for others as well.
"I hope we can help some people through their bad times with our music," said Johnny. "That's what music's all about anyway. Music has brought me through some really dark times in my life and I hope this record can bring some other people through their bad times."
1964
Ronnie Van Zant hits a line drive that strikes Bob Burns in the head, who was watching the game with Gary Rossington. Burns is knocked unconscious but the three became friends and have a common interest in music. They soon form a band along with Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom.
1970
The band starts rehearsing at Hell House.
By this time all the members have dropped out of Robert E. Lee High School. Before a gig at Jay's Forest Inn, Ronnie Van Zant introduces the band as Leonard Skinner, a high school gym teacher who tormented them for their long hair. They later change the spelling to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Roadie Billy Powell joins the band as keyboardist.
The band asks to be let out of their contract with Shade Tree Records.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD TO COMMENCE 'VICIOUS CYCLE' TOUR
GUITARIST GARY ROSSINGTON TAKING ADDITIONAL TIME OFF
AT HIS NEUROLOGIST'S REQUEST
LYNYRD SKYNYRD will now commence their "VICIOUS CYCLE" tour September 16 in Trenton, NJ after the band's founding lead guitarist GARY ROSSINGTON rests under doctor's orders.
ROSSINGTON--who underwent a successful open-heart surgery in late February--was originally advised to take some additional time off before returning to the road after it was discovered that he suffered a mild seizure. ROSSINGTON's neurologist will monitor him over the next five weeks as there is some artery blockage.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD, who were forced to cancel the remainder of their "Party of a Lifetime" co-headlining tour dates with Sammy Hagar, will cancel their own "VICIOUS CYCLE" tour dates through September 13 to accommodate ROSSINGTON's recovery.
For those fans wanting ticket refunds, please contact venue box offices for details. It is anticipated that LYNYRD SKYNYRD will make scheduled performances at a later date in these cities.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD FORCED TO CANCEL REMAINING CO-HEADLINE TOUR DATES WITH SAMMY HAGAR DUE TO MEDICAL CONDITION OF THE BAND'S GARY ROSSINGTON;
BAND ANTICIPATED TO COMMENCE THEIR OWN "VICIOUS CYCLE" TOUR AUGUST 23.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD have been forced to cancel the remainder of the "Party of a Lifetime" co-headline tour with Sammy Hagar due to the medical condition of the band's founding lead guitarist GARY ROSSINGTON. Sammy Hagar, with whom the band began touring July 19, will announce his confirmed tour plans through the remainder of August on Tuesday, August 5. Meanwhile, it's anticipated that LYNYRD SKYNYRD's own "Vicious Cycle Tour" will commence August 23 in Omaha, Nebraska.
Last week, ROSSINGTON--who underwent a successful open heart surgery in late February and was greenlighted to return to the road--was urged by his doctor to rest in order to combat medical fatigue. The group subsequently cancelled five concerts (from August 1 through August 6).
Upon further medical testing and analysis, Dr. Matthew W. Gwynn at Atlanta Neurology determined that ROSSINGTON suffered a mild seizure and he's now under the doctor's care. ROSSINGTON was released from the hospital yesterday and will need at least three weeks of house rest prior to touring.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD lead singer Johnny Van Zant states, "We're hopeful that Gary will have a speedy recovery and look forward to performing in the near future."
VAN ZANT goes on to say that "Lynyrd Skynyrd encourage all of the fans to head out and see Sammy carry the torch. Sammy's an excellent artist! Great music and hot babes. What more could you ask for?"
Lynyrd Synyrd returns to rock arena with Vicious Cycle
This summer LYNYRD SKYNYRD returns to the rock arena with VICIOUS CYCLE (out May 20).
VICIOUS CYCLE is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s first studio album in 4 years. According to Skynyrd singer Johnny Van Zant, the first singe, 'Red White and Blue’ is a shot at anybody that wants to be against the United States. KID ROCK lends his vocal chords to the album’s bonus track and LS staple 'Gimme Me Back My Bullets'.
SAMMY HAGAR is teaming up with LS for PARTY OF A LIFETIME Tour this summer. The two titans of rock are inviting local bands the chance to play the opening slot in their hometown.
Vicious Cycle - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Most people would not think of country music when they heard Lynyrd Skynyrd mentioned, but if you look a bit deeper you would see that they have had influence on many country stars with their blend of southern rock. While most of their songs on Vicious Cycle sound like rock and roll, you still hear a tinge of that down-home country feeling in either the music or lyrics.
The crackling heard in the beginning of "That's How I Like It" adds an old time feeling to the track with a distant bluesy sounding guitar that turns electric and loud. This song is an energetic declaration of what makes them proud - the site of an American flag - and what they truly like about life - loud music, fast cars, ice cold beer, old whiskey, and music turned "way up loud."
The whole band gets together to sing different lines of "Pick 'Em Up," which makes the listener feel like they are a group of old buddies sitting around jamming and playing their instruments together. John sings about having a good life because of Jim Beam and Rickey reminds him of another perk to being around - women. They are all free spirits and though their feet may never be totally on the ground, they will come back every once in awhile after they leave. "Don't miss me when I'm gone, because I'll be around," is what they all sing in the chorus.
"Dead Man Walkin'" is another song with a down home vibe in the beginning of the tune about how a wrong guy was accused and found guilty of murder. The innocent man was walking down the hall to his death because of a dirty lawman and a judge that said he was guilty. The lyrics asks the question of "If put in the same situation of someone hurting your woman, would you pull the trigger if you were standing in his shoes?" to which the reply is basically "of course." You have to do what to need to do sometimes is the message of the song.
"Red White & Blue" is being played on radio stations across the USA along with the great amount of other patriotic tunes out there today. Though they never have claimed to be the perfect gentlemen, they have always appreciated everything about America and have worked hard to be where they are, despite the fact that life was not easy. Their mama may have cried when they were in jail, but she never bailed them out because she knew they would have to learn their lesson in order to never make that mistake again. They prefer to have friends just like them instead of people that act fake and plastic. "My hair's turning white, my neck's always been red, my collar's still blue. We've always been here tryin' to sing the truth to you. Guess you could say we've always been red, white and blue" is how the chorus goes.
One of the only slower songs on the album, "Hell or Heaven" actually turns uptempo after a few lines. Mama always told him that you have a choice of how you want to live your life and you can either enjoy it or not. Look to the sky and the answer should be clear whether you want to live life for all it's worth or walk through fire all of the time. "Remember what mama said that day" and everything will be all right.
Kid Rock joins the group at the end of the album for a high octane rockin' re-make of "Gimme Back My Bullets." Whether you like Kid Rock or not, he fits in perfectly with Lynyrd Skynyrd as they all sing about seeing hard times but walking the straight and narrow now. They want their bullets back so they can put them where they belong and then they vow that they "Aint gonna see no more damage done." The song really gets the listener pumped up and is a perfect way to close "Vicious Cycle."
Lynyrd Skynyrd . . . 30 Years and Counting
Intro:
Why are they famous?
As one of the greatest country-rock bands to come out of the '70s, Lynyrd Skynyrd remain legendary thanks to all-time classics like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Freebird." Thirty years after the release of their debut album, Lynyrd Skynyrd is back with Vicious Cycle.
Quick Bio:
Lynyrd Skynyrd's tale is one of tragedy, turmoil and triumph. The band that became synonymous with Southern rock thanks to classic cuts like "Simple Man," "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Freebird" was all but decimated on October 20, 1977, when, while on tour to support Street Survivors, the band's plane crashed into a swamp, killing Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, back-up vocalist Cassie Gaines, and road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and seriously injuring the rest of the band members.
Initially, surviving member and guitarist Gary Rossington decided -- along with the other survivors -- to disband Lynyrd for good. But over the years, Gary has remained a vital pulse of the band, keeping the Skynyrd legacy alive and kicking.
Today, 30 years after their debut album changed the face of rock 'n' roll, we caught up with Gary to reminisce, mourn and celebrate the release of Vicious Cycle, like only good southern boys can...
Q: You guys released a 30-year anniversary album to commemorate, what else, but Lynyrd Skynyrd's 30th year in the business. How did that come to be?
Well, the record label owns the library we have... so they were going to release that. That is why we decided to hit the studio and come out with our own album, this way new generations can learn about Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Q: Amen... you mention new generations, what is the single greatest difference between, say, the generation that first caught Lynyrd Skynyrd and today's generation?
Well, the music industry has changed so much... there is so much more that comes in between music and the fans, that is why we wanted to do this album.
ż Quick fact ?
Before finally deciding on "Lynyrd Skynyrd," the band was originally known as "My Backyard." The name was later changed as a tribute to a school gym teacher named Leonard Skinner.
Q: You guys rank among one of the most influential bands in rock and southern music, but at the same time, you have endured some traumatic experiences. Do the tough times make it harder or does it give you the resolve to charge ahead?
Oh, it makes you want it more. I mean, for one reason or another, the good God has left me on this planet, surely I will not sit around and not do what I do naturally.
Q: Here is a question from a reader: if Ronnie, Steve and Cassie were to come back for one session, what is the one song you would have to play together?
"Simple Man" may be one, but then again, how could we leave out "Freebird" or "Sweet Home Alabama"?
Q: You've been around since the beginning and you've seen some of your bandmates die; did you ever intend on going solo or was it always a matter of keeping the Lynyrd Skynyrd name going?
Yeah, I could do stuff by myself, but Lynyrd Skynyrd touched many people and like I said, if we could get newer generations to find out about Lynyrd, then it cannot hurt.
Q: Who do you listen to among today's stars?
Man, I love Limp Bizkit, Johnny Lange, many people...
Q: Both are very talented. Another question we received from a reader: do you still feel any animosity toward Neil Young?
Oh no, that was more about musicians simply using music to stir the pot... It's funny you should ask because everyone asks, but between Harvest and everything else he has done, we're actually fans of his -- he's one of a kind.
Q: Indeed he is. Another question: what do you think about Drive-By Truckers and their album Southern Rock Opera?
Well, I know the band, but I cannot really say much about any particular tunes. There are a lot of legends about the history of Southern rock...
ż Quick fact ?
Keyboardist Billy Powell was the original Lynyrd Skynyrd member with the most musical training.
Q: Do you have a guilty conscience for having survived the place crash when the others did not?
No, I do not have a guilty conscience... I mean, we all go through our own ups and downs, but living my life with a guilty conscience would not make much of a difference -- not like they will come back, will they?
Q: I hate to ask this, but if you had to choose one song to play between "Sweet Home Alabama," "Simple Man" or "Freebird," what would it be? I know it's like asking a father which child he would keep...
Man, that is a tough one. Well, if we do not play "Alabama," our fans would kill us. "Freebird" is an anthem and "Simple Man" is a very nice song... so there, I can't answer!
Q: Thank you very much for your time Gary; keep on bringing the Lynyrd Skynyrd legend home!

Rendben.

HAGAR AND SKYNYRD BOOZE CRUISIN’
The Party Of A Lifetime Tour, with co-headliners Sammy Hagar and Lynyrd Skynyrd, might just be this summer’s booziest tour. It’s sponsored by two liquors. Skynyrd will be sponsored by Jim Beam bourbon, and Sammy Hagar will be sponsored by his own Cabo Wabo brand of tequila. A tequila-centered show, it turns out, is nothing new for Hagar, who gave us a typical setting for one of his performances. (Actuality #1) “I have twenty one cases of tequila that I furnish for the backstage party every single show, and four waitresses and two bartenders that furnish me and my fans during my performance, on stage. My stage is built where I got bleachers on the stage, right behind the band, right around us. And I have waitresses and bartenders, they mix Cabo Wabo margaritas all night long, and very weak ones for the fans, and very strong ones for the band.” Both acts on The Party Of A Lifetime Tour are releasing albums on May 20th, Skynyrd’s will be titled Vicious Cycle, and Hagar’s, a live release with his band The WaboRitas, is called Hallelujah. The tour kicks off on July 19th in Cadott, Wisconsin.
