Utrecht delighted with Viduka mark II
Tuesday 14th August 2001
Uefa Cup hopefuls FC Utrecht believe they may have struck gold with the signing of striker Mark Tsiorlas. "In Australia they already say that he is a second Mark Viduka of Leeds United," Utrecht director of football Han Berger said.
The youngster, who is in possession of an Australian as well as a Greek passport, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with an option on another three seasons.
"If he fulfills our expectations he could really be of great use," Berger told Utrecht's Nieuwsblad. "He is strong and he is very focused on scoring. If all goes well this could be a very good signing.”
The 18-year old forward had also impressed scout Ton van der Linden.
"He is the sort of player who you immediately realise has something extra," he said. "However, he will have to develop further of course. He's certainly a lad with potential."
Utrecht are not planning to throw Tsiorlas in at the deep end, as he is expected to be fielded with the reserves for the time being.
When he's ready for the first team he will have to compete with Igor Gluscevic and Dirk Kuijt, who scored 32 goals between them last season, for a spot in the starting line-up.
Utrecht, meanwhile, appear to be ready for the start of the new campaign after holding West Ham United to a scoreless draw last weekend.
The English side won on penalties, but manager Frans Adelaar still liked what he saw.
"It is a confidence boost for the new season," Adelaar said. "We play three away games at the start of the campaign against NAC, Sparta and Vitesse and this match provides us with some peace of mind.
"Against English clubs you always expect a gruelling game and when you see that we were able to take the game to them during the final stages, I can only be satisfied. We're are in good shape fitness-wise and we have no injuries, except for Tibor Dombi and Ruud Berger."
