VERON IS THE NEW VIEIRA: Stam
Manchester United may have been unable to lure Arsenal star Patrick Vieira to Old Trafford this summer, but defender Jaap Stam claims the champions' new signing Juan Sebastian Veron is every bit as good as the brilliant Frenchman.
Arsenal's French World Cup winner had been linked with United before the champions clinched the Ł24million signing of Veron from Lazio, which will be completed tomorrow after a medical at Old Trafford. But United's defensive kingpin reckons Veron can rival Vieira as the countdown for next season's title race gets underway.
Stam said: ``Veron is great news for United. He is a wonderful player who is rightly regarded as one of the best players in the world. He has so much to his game, he is a great passer of the ball, a strong runner and he gets his share of goals. He is equally good at attacking as defending. I have always been impressed with him.''
Stam added: ``I would say he plays in a similar style to Arsenal's Patrick Vieira. Veron's arrival will certainly increase competition for places in midfield. I don't know what the boss has in mind because we already have the best midfield in Europe with Keane, Scholes, Becks, Giggs, Butt and the rest of the lads. I suppose Veron will just make the best better."
NEVILLE VOWS TO GIVE FERGIE A HAPPY ENDING
Manchester United defender Gary Neville is promising Sir Alex Ferguson an 'extra special send-off' for his last season as Old Trafford boss as he prepares to break the British transfer record for the second time this summer.
Argentinian star Juan Sebastian Veron flies into Manchester tomorrow for a medical and to complete his Ł24million transfer from Lazio. The midfield ace is expected to be unveiled to the world's media on Thursday. Veron's arrival means that Fergie has now spent Ł44million on new faces, following the arrival of Dutch striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy for Ł19million from PSV Eindhoven in May.

And England defender Gary Neville underlined the determination of the United squad to give their boss a great send off, saying: ''We want a special season this time around and I think we could well have one. We've just got to make sure we remain level-headed and think about playing this season and forget about what has happened in the past, because last season was a disappointment as far as the European Cup was concerned and a big wake-up call for us.
''The manager said at the end of last season that the squad would remain together, with the addition of one or two new faces, which is happening. I'm delighted that we have all stuck together.''
VERON TO TEAM UP WITH TOP MAN BECKS
Manchester United are expected to unveil Juan Veron tomorrow when the Argentine international will complete his British record Ł23.5million transfer from Lazio. Veron will form a potentially lethal midfield partnership with captain Roy Keane and England skipper David Beckham who has been named the club's Player of the Year.
Veron will be following in the footsteps of his famous father when he takes his first stride onto the Old Trafford pitch - Juan Ramon played there for Estudiantes in the 1968 World Club Championship.
His move from Lazio is expected to be tied up following a club medical tomorrow and United are preparing to stage a press conference on Thursday.
Beckham, meanwhile, has been voted United's player of the year, finishing ahead of goalkeeper Fabien Barthez with Teddy Sheringham third.
The poll run by United's official website attracted more than 93,000 votes with Beckham netting 25 per cent - 4 per cent more than Sheringham who left the club a few weeks ago to return to Tottenham. Roy Keane was fourth and Ryan Giggs fifth.

I say: Here are a couple of points which you should be aware of Ferguson:
1). Patrick Vieira is a contracted Arsenal player. What he wants to do with his career is really none of your business, and any discussions that take place between the club and the player remain their business (not yours) despite what is reported in the press.
2). Vieira has not actually been quoted as saying he wants to play for Manchester United, therefore either you are making assumptions based upon your over-inflated sense of self-importance, or you have been speaking to the player or his representatives illegally.
3). Arsenal are protective of Sol Campbell because as of Tuesday July 3rd. he is also a contracted Arsenal player.

United have released Teddy Sheringham this summer, but Ferguson says no-one will be following him out of the door.
Ferguson said: "Selling players to balance the books has never been mentioned.
"When we have sold, we have done so because we have thought it might be time a player took a new challenge, or we had a good offer, or we were worried about him not being happy at being left out of certain games.

FERGIE OFFERS ADVICE TO COACHING 'STUDENTS'
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been sharing his wisdom with some of the country's coaching talent in the first Uefa Pro Licence course to be held in England.Ferguson and AS Roma boss Fabio Capello were among the guest speakers for the three-day residential course in Leeds this weekend.
The event is being run by the Football Association under technical director Howard Wilkinson as part of his wide-reaching review of the coaching structure in England, and is the first event in a year-long process which will include distance learning modules, club visits, overseas trips and two further residential weekends.
Sammy Lee, recently elevated by national coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, is among the 12-strong party, which also includes Noel Blake, Terry Burton, Steve Cotterill, Mervyn Day, Dario Gradi, Stewart Houston, Chris Hughton, Dave Jones, Lawrie Sanchez, Alan Smith and Mick Wadsworth.
``This pilot course aims to improve the coaching and managing of elite teams in England,'' said Wilkinson. ``It's another building block in a series of proposals that began with the Charter for Quality and will be concluded by the opening of the National Football Centre in 2004. The course breaks new ground in its use of distance-learning modules via the Internet.
``Not only do we hope that it will make the students better coaches, it will also open up avenues outside England that were previously inaccessible. The FA has committed itself to only employing people who have the necessary formal qualifications, and the UEFA licences will play an increasingly important role in coaching in this country over the next couple of years.''

A 36 éves játékos mindössze kilenc mérkőzésen lépett pályára az előző idényben hátsérülése miatt és most a lábában is megsérült egy ín. „Megvitattam Bryan Robsonnal (a Middlesbrough korábbi főnöke), hogy játszhatnék-e még ebben a szezonban.” – mondta Pallister. „Sajnos a hátműtétem után egy ín is megsérült a lábamban ezért kénytelen voltam meghozni ezt a döntést. Szeretném megköszönni a szurkolóknak és az edzői karnak, hogy szorítottak értem.”
Pallister négy bajnoki címert nyert kilenc év alatt a Manchester Uniteddel és 22-szer szerepelt az angol válogatottban. „Bár ez egy szomorú nap számomra, mégis nagyon szerencsésnek érzem magam, hogy a legmagasabb szinten űzhettem a labdarúgást, és világklasszis játékosokkal szerepelhettem együtt.” – mondta. „Számos csodálatos emlékre tekinthetek vissza.”
Steve McClaren, aki júniusban Robsont váltotta a Boro menedzseri posztján is dicsérte Pallistert. „Gary fantasztikus karriert futott be és ő volt az egyik legjobb védő a Middlesbrough, a Manchester United és az angol válogatott történetében. Mindamellett Gary távozása lehetőséget nyújt számunkra néhány fiatal tehetség csapatba illesztésére. Az egész klub nevében szeretnék mindazért köszönetet mondani Gary-nek, amit a klubért tett és kívánom neki, hogy minden a legjobban sikerüljön neki, amit a jövőben tesz.”
Pallister 1984 novemberében került a Borohoz a Billingham Towntól néhány labdáért és egy készlet mezért cserébe. A hírnevét a Manchester Unitedben alapozta meg, miután 1989-ben 2.3 millió fontért a klubhoz igazolt. 1988 nyarán tért vissza a Borohoz, miután Sir Alex Ferguson megvásárolta a holland Jaap Stamot.

ARSENAL ARE HYPOCRITES OVER VIERA: Fergie
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stepped up his war of words with old adversary Arsene Wenger by accusing the Arsenal boss of hypocrisy in his refusal to let French star Patrick Vieira quit Highbury and join the champions.
Fergie feels Arsenal are displaying double standards as they claimed a player should be free to move to any club he chooses following Sol Campbell's controversial transfer to Highbury from neighbours Tottenham this week, yet they are refusing to let want-away Gunners star Vieira join rivals Manchester United.

FERGIE'S SUCCESSOR FACES 'THE GREATEST CHALLENGE'
It has been widely recognised that Sir Alex Ferguson's successor faces the toughest task in English football when the Manchester United boss retires at the end of next season, but Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni has gone a step further. He claims there is no bigger challenge anywhere in the world than taking over the Old Trafford managerial reins from the legendary Scot .
Trapattoni also reckons it could be hard for the new man to win the respect of the players, who have only played under Ferguson at United.
''Whoever comes next will need to be brave because the memories of Ferguson will be everywhere,'' he said. ''In football it's hard enough to follow a coach who has been a great champion, but it's even harder when the man has the steel and charisma that Ferguson has got.
''This will be one of the biggest challenges in football, maybe the biggest. The new manager will be getting some of the greatest players in the world, like Keane and Beckham, but they are players to whom Sir Alex Ferguson is Manchester United.
''Maybe they will have to appoint someone from outside of the English league. Whoever is making the decision has got a very tough job. They need to appoint a man of strength who can take up a huge challenge. Making that judgement is not a job I would like.''
At 62 Trapattoni, who is contracted to Italy until after the 2002 World Cup, is too old for the position. However the man who has coached Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Fiorentina claims he may work in England one day.
''I am the coach of Italy now, but who knows what will happen in the future? My contract runs out after the World Cup. I've coached Bayern Munich in Germany and I enjoyed that experience.I admire the passion of the English game very much and perhaps I could coach a club there one day.''
