PRAGUE (CP) -- Petr Nedved wants to play for the Czech Republic in the world hockey tournament later this month in Finland but the International Ice Hockey Federation says he's not eligible.
The Czechs are appealing.
Nedved played for Canada in the 1994 Olympics. Until 1996, IIHF rules stated a player who skated for one country at the world championship could not skate for another at any subsequent world event. There was no mention of the Olympics. In 1996, the rule was amended to ban switching countries altogether.
The appeal will be based on the fact that in 1994 Nedved had no reason to believe that by playing for Canada at the Winter Games he'd close the door to ever playing again for his homeland at the world tournament.
"We don't want to make a cause celebre but we feel 100 per cent that we're right," said Czech coach Slavomir Lener. "Petr wants to play."
