JG: The First Goal Is The Key

John Gregory is looking for his players to be quick off the mark against NK Varteks and this morning conceded: “The first goal tonight will be absolutely vital.”
The Villa boss is looking for a repeat of Monday’s quickfire start at Southampton – a start that saw his side leading 2-0 after just 15 minutes.

Trailing 3-2 from last week’s disappointing first-leg, Villa must take the game to Varteks tonight and Gregory told www.avfc.co.uk: “The first goal is crucial, without any doubt, the first goal is crucial. It was like that against Southampton on Monday night.

“At 2-1 at half-time, the one thing we did say was: ‘If we score the next goal, the game’s finished.’ We had to wait until the 75th minute to get it, but we got it.

“It’s the same tonight. The first goal could decide the course of events for the rest of the night.

“If we score it, they’re on the back-foot, they get edgy and all the rest of it. They score it and psychologically there might be no coming back.”

Gregory continued: “Tonight, it’s about being positive. We know what we have to do and we’ve basically got a second chance to try and put right what we did wrong last Thursday.

“I just want a positive attitude from everybody and I know I’ll get it. I won’t need to say too much tonight. The boys are very aware. They were hurt last week.

“they’re very proud and they bounced back on Monday night in the way I was hoping for. Now I expect the same kid of response tonight.”

--------------------------------------------------Hassan Kachloul insists Villa have the firepower to get their Uefa Cup campaign back on track in Croatia tonight.

And he believes in-form striker Juan Pablo Angel could be just the man to sink NK Varteks on their home patch.

Angel was hugely impressive at Southampton on Monday night, adding a goal to his brace against Varteks last Thursday.

And Kachloul believes the Ł9.5million record-buy could continue that red-hot form in Croatia tonight, telling www.avfc.co.uk: “He’s in really good form and has been since the beginning of the season.

“There’s also Darius if he’s fit, Dion Dublin had a good game on Monday before he was sent-off, while Bosko Balaban is desperate for a chance.”

He continued: “We’ve got the players to make the difference at Villa. I know we can win this game and progress to the second round.

“Now it’s just up to us to show more pride in the game and make up for last week’s defeat against Varteks.”

--------------------------------------------------
Peter Schmeichel insists Villa can keep the Uefa Cup dream alive in Croatia tonight and told www.avfc.co.uk: “We have to take the game to Varteks and have a real go.”

But the vastly experienced keeper admits lessons must be quickly learned from the 3-2 first-leg defeat against the Croatian title-hopefuls.

Schmeichel believes Villa were given a harsh lesson in the realities of European competition and commented: “It can be difficult if you don’t have experience in Europe, to find your way of playing. I could see that last week. We were at times confused.

“When we were confused, we lost possession and once we lost possession, they just kept the ball. That’s where they are very good, they showed that. They punished us for every mistake we made and scored three goals out of three chances.”

European Cup winner Schmeichel added: “This is what we have to learn to play against. We don’t get that on a Saturday. In the Premiership, the pace is higher and it’s easier to put pressure on the ball.

“You can’t do that against players who put their foot on the ball and take the tempo out of it.. Varteks did very well to take the tempo out of the game.

“We’re not very good at playing at a slow tempo. We have to play quick, fast and furious, trying to score every time we get the ball. That’s just the way we’ve been brought up.”

Despite last week’s disappointment, Schmeichel refused to give up hope. And, drawing on his wealth of European experience, he added: “I’ve been through this with United before. We had similar problems. I remember us losing the first-leg against Galatasaray at home. Then there was Rotor Volgograd, 2-2 at home and other bad results.

“It was a very, very bad result for us and obviously not one we’re proud of. But it’s a two-legged game. We’re a goal down and this result obviously dictates how we’re going to approach the tonight's game.

“There’s no two ways about it, we’ve got to have a go and that’s how we’re going to go and play out here.”

Gregory's praise for Angel
26 Sep 2001

John Gregory has praised Ł9.5million striker Juan Pablo Angel insisting he was surprised he did not walk out on Aston Villa last season.

The Colombian international has at last started to find the form that persuaded Gergory to part with the club record fee, scoring three goals in the last two games, and he will spearhead Villa's bid to overhaul a 3-2 first leg deficit in the UEFA Cup tie against Varteks.

He had major problems to contend with on and off the field after his arrival from River Plate in January. His wife and son were both taken ill and on the pitch Angel found the net just once in his nine games last season.

And Gregory said: "I was surprised he did not pack up everything and say he had had enough. They were major, major problems and despite all that he still had a smile on his face. He is determined to be a success and he deserves a great deal of credit for still being in the country."

"There is still a lot to come from him. He has pride and hunger and desire to be a success like some of his pals who have come to Europe and played with some big clubs. He has shown he has not come here just for the money. He has come to be a major success. He is still a young man at 25 years old. He still has a big drive and you have to admire the way he is determined to prove himself."

Another impressive 3-1 win away from home, another controversial incident overshadowing Villa’s display.

The Sun focuses on the dismissal of Dion Dublin – almost forgetting that goals from George Boateng, JPA and Moustapha Hadji gave Villa three deserved points.

The same paper reports that David Ginola’s planned press conference has been put on-hold and reveals that Villa flop Sasa Curcic has been handed a trial by Barnsley.

The Star, Daily Mail, Express and Mirror also concentrate on the sending-off, while Hyder Jawad of the Birmingham Post writes: “This was a deserved victory, one that was memorable for three fine goals and a performance of determination.”

Of course….Villa won.

Gregory to appeal over Dublin dismissal
24 Sep 2001

Aston Villa boss John Gregory revealed he will appeal against the red card Dion Dublin picked up in the 3-1 win at Southampton.

Dublin was sent off after 57 minutes for tangling with Saints defender Tahar El Khalej as the teams waited for a free-kick to be taken - although television replays showed contact was minimal. After consulting with his assistants referee Stege Dunn showed produced the red card for Dublin, who stomred off the pitch, consoled by Gregory on the way.

Gregory said: "It was quite pathetic. There's been so much spoken about players diving and there was hardly any contact."He certainly didn't headbutt him. I hope the referee looks at it and rescinds the decision. I hope common sense prevails."

The Villa boss continued on Sky Sports: "We're a good bunch of lads who are a delight to manage and train. We don't get into trouble with refs and behave ourselves on the pitch - I'm very upset Dion got a red card."

Villa keeper Peter Schmeichel insists Dublin did not headbutt El Khalej. "I know Dion and he wouldn't do anything like that," the Dane said. "Seeing the guy rolling around on the floor - I knew it was play-acting straight away. The ref said to me he hadn't seen anything himself."

John Gregory reflected on a frustrating afternoon at Villa Park and conceded: “If we’ve got any aspirations of Champions League football, then we need to start winning games like this.”

Villa were unable to build on last week’s impressive success at Liverpool as Sunderland came for and left with a goalless draw.

Peter Reid’s men were certainly happy to defend from the off and Gregory told www.avfc.co.uk: “It was frustrating. After an excellent display last week, I was disappointed to witness a poor game. It was dull.

“You get games like that in the season and you have to get something from them. We had an opportunity to build on last week’s result and we blew it.”

The Villa boss continued: “I’m not too happy with the way things have gone today, but it might just be the kick up the backside we need. A victory such as we had last week should be followed up with another victory.

“This is a game we should have won and we didn’t. So all of us are not too pleased. I fully expected us to win this match today and that’s why I’m so disappointed.”

Villa 0-0 Sunderland

Villa failed to produce their Sunday-best on a frustrating afternoon at
Villa Park, as this fixture finished goalless for the second year in
succession.

John Gregory had hoped to see his side build on the stunning win at Anfield,
but it was not to be in a match of very few genuine chances.

Not surprisingly, the Villa boss kept faith with the starting 11 from that
triumph at Liverpool - Dion Dublin continuing alongside Darius Vassell
up-front.

The one surprise was perhaps the omission of Juan Pablo Angel from the
bench. Recent capture Bosko Balaban was named among the substitutes.

Villa's first opening came on four as Dublin brilliantly flicked Mellberg's
through ball into the path of Vassell, only to see his the England Under-21
striker foiled by McCartney.

A downpour just before kick-off made conditions slippery underfoot, with
several players losing their footing early on.

Vassell had no such problems on nine, latching onto Dublin's flick and
firing in a vicious left-foot shot that Macho did well to deflect wide for a
corner.

Dublin, obviously boosted by his goal at Anfield eight days ago was winning
a lot in the air against Sunderland centre-halves McCartney and Craddock.

Hendrie's clever turn after 14 minutes created Villa's next opening. He cut
infield from Wright's throw-in, but sent his 35-yard piledriver straight at
Macho in the Sunderland goal.

Niall Quinn had Sunderland's first half-chance on 19, sneaking in behind
Alpay, but he dragged his shot well wide from the edge of the box.

Alpay met Merson's corner on 24, but failed to get any real power into his
far-post header and Macho gathered comfortably.

The mid-period was notable only for the lack of real quality in the
final-third from either side, with the last ball all too often failing to
reach the intended target.

Vassell pounced on a defensive slip from Craddock on 40, but saw his shot
deflected just wide. Alpay's header from the subsequent corner went straight
to Macho.

Vassell's brilliant run down the left on 45, nut-megging Hass, also went
unrewarded. His cross was just too deep for Merson.

Seconds later, Quinn almost gave the visitors an undeserved lead, but saw
his header from an Arca corner brilliantly tipped over the bar by
Schmeichel.

Paul Merson almost broke the deadlock with the first real chance of the
second-half, but saw his brilliant half-volley from the edge of the box well
saved by Macho. Moments later, Michael Gray almost headed past his own
keeper under pressure from Vassell.

With Villa still struggling to make the breakthrough though, Merson made way
for Ginola on 55, as Gregory looked to the Frenchman for some magic.

Sunderland had a penalty appeal dismissed on 60 as Phillips claimed he had
been felled by Mellberg. Less than a minute later, Phillips headed
Sunderland's best chance so-far straight at Schmeichel.

Vassell shot just wide on 62 after a jinking run in from the left and it
appeared to be just a matter of time before we had the first goal of the
afternoon. Still the deadlock continued, prompting Gregory to introduce
Croatian hitman Balaban on 68.

Alpay's brilliantly timed challenge denied Phillips on 70, just as the
England striker was shaping-up to shoot from six-yards out.

Four minutes later Hendrie blazed just over the bar after cutting in from
the left and seconds after that the same man dragged a long-range effort
just wide.

Ginola worked his magic on 79, sprinting away down the left, leaving
defenders trailing in his wake, but the eventual shot was deflected tamely
wide for a corner.

With the seconds ticking away, Kachloul mis-cued his shot on 87, before
Vassell narrowly failed to make contact with Ginola's left-wing cross.

Phillips looked to have carved out an opening for himself a minute later as
he took the ball around Schmeichel. In doing so though, he was forced wide
and screwed a shot over the bar from an acute angle.

That was the last moment of note on a frustrating afternoon for both sides,
with a draw probably the fair result in the end
