Sony Ericsson WTA Tour veteran Jennifer Capriati, who won the event in 1991 and 1992, traveled to San Diego to honor Tournament Directors Raquel Giscafre (pictured) and Jane Stratton who are hosting the tournament in it's final year. Jennifer helped Raquel helped auction off a lifesize cardboard cutout of herself to benefit the nearby Scripps Polster Breast Care Center. The cutout was bought for $1,200 by Rancho Santa Fe’s Stacey Feinberg. When asked why she wanted “Jennifer” so much, Feinberg remarked: “I’m going to bring this with me to every tournament I play to intimidate our opponents.”
Jennifer Capriati, is scheduled to participate in Jim Berry Tennis Classic festivities on April 14th in Miami.
Held annually at Royal Palm Tennis Club in Pinecrest, the JBTC is free and open to the public and will feature the celebrity tennis exhibition, pro-am tennis tournament, sponsor clinic and the EWM Realtors Children's Activity Park with a rock climbing wall and moonwalk, followed by a luncheon and live auction.
Jennifer Capriati arrives at a party in Miami March 21, 2007. Capriati is in Miami for the Sony Ericsson Open WTA tennis tournament that starts on March 22.
"Floridában edzek, készülök a visszatérésre" - nyilatkozta a 30 éves játékos. Capriati pályafutása során három Grand Slam-viadalt nyert: 2001-ben és 2002-ben az Australian Openen győzött, míg 2001-ben a Roland Garroson bizonyult a legjobbnak.
Former world number one and two-time Australian Open winner Jennifer Capriati still plans a comeback despite being 30 and missing the last two years with a shoulder injury.
Capriati has been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic surgery in 2005 to repair a torn labrum in her right shoulder. But she was quoted on the WTA website as saying she is still training and is planning to play again.
"These days, if I'm not travelling to go see a doctor I'm just hanging out, trying to have some fun. I'm still in Florida, I still work out, I'm still trying to come back," she said. The American won the 2001 and 2002 Australian Open titles as well as the 2001 French Open. But injuries have kept her out since she withdrew from the Australian Open in 2005.
Capriati made history by becoming the youngest player to reach a WTA final aged 13 before drug and personal problems saw her retreat from the game. But she came back in style to win the Australian Open in 2001, defeating Martina Hingis, who herself made a successful comeback here last year after three years out of the game.
One of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's all-time greats, Jennifer Capriati, made an appearance Wednesday, January 10 at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show, showing her support for the Tour's title sponsor, Sony Ericsson, by partaking in a Q&A session, a one-hour autograph session and a raffle contest, as well as a Sony blog.
A bubbly Capriati also spoke to Variety on how she feels about Sony Ericsson's new place in women's professional tennis. "It's great to have a sponsor like Sony Ericsson," said the 30-year-old Floridian. "They're huge, they have all kinds of products, and they're fun. I have a W710i walkman phone, and I was using the K790i - it takes great pictures. I've gotten into all of that now. I text a lot too. I wish I could say I've been playing on the Tour since they took over; I haven't, but I will be."
Having made one of the great comebacks in tennis history in the early part of this decade, returning from adversity to capture two Australian Opens (2001, 2002), one French Open (2001) and reach the No.1 ranking, Capriati has been in injury-induced hiatus recently, missing 2005 and 2006 with right shoulder problems. It was a subject that the American addressed during her talk with Variety.
"These days, if I'm not travelling to go see a doctor I'm just hanging out, trying to have some fun. I'm still in Florida, I still work out, I'm still trying to come back."
