Protective Netting Information
WARNING! Despite enhanced spectator shielding measures, pucks still may fly into the spectator area. Serious injury can occur. Stay alert at all times including during warmup and after play stops. If struck, immediately ask an usher for directions to the medical station.
o Joe Louis Arena, like every building in the NHL, has added protective netting above the glass in each end of the rink.
Why do we need the netting?
Netting is common at hockey games virtually everywhere else in the world, and following the tragic accident in Columbus last spring, a lot of thought and research went into the league's decision to mandate netting for all 30 NHL arenas. While the analysis confirmed that NHL buildings are safe, the league felt taking this step was the appropriate response to such a tragedy and would make the spectator areas even safer. The league's objective was to reduce the possibility that a puck would enter the seating area during pregame warm-ups and games, and to attain that goal without unduly interfering with your enjoyment of the game.
Why is the netting black and not clear or white?
The league conducted extensive research to determine the type of netting that would maximize both protection and visibility. Test results and other factors led the league to conclude that black netting accomplishes both of these very important objectives because it absorbs light, rather than reflecting it, and causing possible distortion of your view. The league determined that the white netting refracted the light and drew your eye to the netting, as opposed to directing your focus through the netting and onto the players on the ice. The monofilament or clear netting also reflected light and is more difficult to work with because of its elasticity. The league concluded that black netting was optimal and the Club agreed.
Was the netting selected for TV reason and not for the fans who sit in the seats?
No. The consensus of all involved in the league's research was that the black netting was preferential both in-person and as broadcast on television.
What recourse do I have?
No discounts or refunds will be made available. The NHL has provided a contact to gather feedback from season ticket holders across the league by calling (212) 789-2710.
PUCKS ENTERING THE STANDS
Please be aware that a puck can be propelled into the spectator area with enough force to cause serious injury. Stay alert at all times in the seating area. If you are injured, please ask the nearest usher for help and directions to the medical station. Red Wings patrons assume all risk and danger incidental to the game of hockey-including specifically, but not exclusively, the danger of being injured by a puck or hockey stick-and agree that Joe Louis Arena, the league its affiliates and employees, the participating clubs, and their agents and players are not liable for injuries from such causes.

Jim Nill
Ass. General Mgr.
DRW Mgmt.Jim DevellanoKen HollandJim Nill

Jim Nill begins his sixth season
as assistant general manager and his 10th overall as a member of the Red Wings’ management team. Nill’s duties include directing Detroit’s amateur scouting and selections at the annual NHL Entry Draft. He also served as the general manager of the Adirondack Red Wings.

Nill continues to oversee the development of the Red Wings’ prospects that are currently assigned to Detroit’s new main affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, as well as those in the Canadian junior and European leagues. Two seasons ago (2001-02) Nill supervised Red Wing prospects assigned to Cincinnati (AHL).

Nill, 45, joined the Red Wings front office in the summer of 1994 following three seasons with the Ottawa Senators. He began his stint with Ottawa as an amateur scout and was promoted to the team’s pro scout after only two years.

Prior to Ottawa, Nill enjoyed a nine-year NHL career as a Right Winger with Boston, Vancouver, St. Louis, Winnipeg and Detroit. He spent his final 21/2 years in uniform with the Red Wings after being acquired from Winnipeg Jan. 10, 1988. His NHL career numbers totaled 58 goals, 87 assists and 854 PIM in 524 regular-season games. Nill later went to Adirondack as a player/coach, retiring as a player after the 1990-91 season.

A native of Hanna, AB, Nill played for Medicine Hat (WHL) in the junior ranks, one year at the University of Calgary and was a member of the Canadian National and Olympic teams in 1979-80. He was St. Louis’ fourth pick (89th overall, fifth round) in the 1978 Entry Draft.

Ken Holland - General Manager

Ken Holland
Ken Holland enters his sixth season as general manager and his 20th year with the Red Wings' organization. In his first two seasons as Detroit's general manager, Holland has quickly established himself as one of the most innovative and aggressive GMs in the National Hockey League.

In his first year as GM, Holland guided the Wings through their second Stanley Cup championship in as many years. In his second season's trade deadline day (March 23, 1999), Holland solidified his respect throughout the league as he orchestrated one of the most amazing 24-hour periods in NHL history. When the dust had settled, Detroit had acquired Chris Chelios, Ulf Samuelsson, Wendel Clark and Bill Ranford. While the Wings' 1999 Stanley Cup run was not to be, Holland's moves were widely regarded as both sound and brilliant as he was applauded for providing Detroit with the best possible chance of winning again.

Just two seasons later, Holland pulled off another amazing flurry of free agent singings in the summer of 2001. It all started May 24, 2001 when Holland secured the first of four veteran players as he signed defenseman Fredrik Olausson fresh out of the Swiss Hockey League. At that time, Olausson had 14 seasons of NHL experience under his belt and was playing for Bern of Swiss league in 2000-01.

Holland would keep the Winged Wheel soundly rolling along August 22, 2001 by signing 600+ goal scorer Brett Hull to a two-year contract. As July 1, 2001 came about Holland would trade forward Slava Kozlov and a first round draft pick to the Buffalo Sabres for goaltender extrodinare Dominik Hasek. The very next day, Holland signed free agent forward Luc Robitaille to a two-year deal with a club option for a third season. These four high-profile players fit very well into the organization and tremendouly contributed all season to Detroit's overall success in the regular season as well as the 2002 playoffs.

Detroit's 11th GM in the club's 76th season has also worked diligently throughout his tenure to secure new contracts with many Red Wing players. Holland fully believes in keeping the continuity of the team intact to ensure future success of the franchise. Evidence of this is shown in his ability to sign Detroit veterans to new contracts such as he accomplished with Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Nicklas Lidstrom and Darren McCarty.

Holland's first priority immediately after the team's 2002 Stanley Cup celebration was to resign Dominik Hasek, Chris Chelios and Igor Larionov. Although Hasek was adamant about retirement, Holland wasted no time in signing Curtis Joseph to fill the void in the Detroit crease. He was also able to secure Chelios and Larionov for at least one more season.

In keeping the all important continuity of a successful veteran team, Holland quickly replaced the freshly retired Scotty Bowman with associate coach Dave Lewis who spent not only nine consecutive seasons as one of Bowman's associate coaches, but 15 seasons as an NHL defensman until he retired in November 1987 and was granted assistant coaching duties under Detroit head coach Jacques Demers.

Holland's role includes overseeing all aspects of hockey operations including all matters relating to player personnel, development, contract negotiations and player movements. Due to his numerous responsibilities as GM, Holland now plays a less prominent role at the NHL Entry Draft, after being the main point person during his seven years as amateur scouting director. In that capacity, he can be credited with selecting some of Detroit's best young talent, including Vyacheslav Kozlov, Darren McCarty, Chris Osgood and Martin Lapointe, along with several other top prospects.

Holland, 47, was elevated to his present position on July 18, 1997. Prior to that time, he handled several different front-office duties for the club over a 15-year period. Holland began his off-ice career in 1985 following a professional career as a goaltender, primarily in the American Hockey League. His first position was a western Canada scout followed by five years as amateur scouting director and three years as assistant general manager.

A native of Vernon, BC, Holland played in the junior ranks for Medicine Hat (WHL) in 1974-75. He was Toronto's 13th pick (188th overall) in the 1975 draft, but never saw action with the Maple Leafs. Holland twice signed with NHL teams as a free agent - in 1980 with Hartford and 1983 with Detroit. He spent most of his pro career with AHL clubs in Binghamton, Springfield and Adirondack. He made his NHL debut with one game in 1980-81 with Hartford followed by three games in a Detroit Red Wings uniform in 1983-84. In February of 1998, Holland was inducted to the Binghamton Hall of Fame.

Ken and his wife Cindi have four children - Brad, Julie, Rachel and Greg - and reside in suburban Detroit. He is also an avid golfer.

Wings Jim Devellano - Senior V.P. / Alternate Governor
Jim Devellano
Senior V.P.

Jim Devellano
Entering his 20th season with the Detroit Red Wings, Jim Devellano continues to be a driving force behind Detroit’s success as well as a strong influence in the evolution and improvement of the National Hockey League. Devellano can be credited with carefully building Detroit’s back-to-back 1997 and 1998 Stanley Cup Championship teams through 16 years of successful draft selections, savvy trades and aggressive free agent acquisitions. He choreographed the Red Wings steady rise from one of the NHL’s weakest teams into the powerful club that has reached the Stanley Cup Finals three of the last seven years and lifted the coveted Cup in triumph two times, giving Devellano his fourth and fifth Stanley Cup rings (three with New York Islanders, two with Detroit).
Devellano was the first individual hired by owners Mike and Marian Ilitch after purchasing the Red Wings in June of 1982. He was the team’s general manager for eight seasons before ascending to his current position of senior vice-president July 13, 1990. An excellent judge of talent throughout his 34 years in the NHL, Devellano believes that building a solid foundation begins with a capable scouting staff and strong Entry Draft selections. Evidence of the wisdom in this plan can be seen in Devellano’s first draft as Red Wings general manager when he tabbed Steve Yzerman in the 1983 Entry Draft to be the cornerstone of the franchise.
Devellano was one of the first NHL general managers to assemble a strong European scouting staff back in 1984. A progressive move that has produced several Red Wing standouts including Russians Sergei Fedorov, Slava Kozlov and Vladimir Konstantinov. Europeans such as Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom were discovered by Devellano’s Swedish scouting staff.
Through the course of Devellano’s tenure with the Red Wings, Detroit has participated in six conference finals (1987, ’88, ’95, ’96, ’97, ’98) and three Stanley Cup Finals (1995, ’97, ’98), collected two President’s Trophies (1995, ’96), three regular-season Western Conference championships (1994, ’95, ’96) and eight division championships (1988, ’89, ’92, ’94, ’95, ’96, ’99, ‘01).
Devellano is the proud owner of 11 Championship Rings. His impressive collection includes: Five Stanley Cup Rings (N.Y. Islanders 1980, 1981, 1982 and Detroit 1997 and 1998), Three Calder Cup Champions Rings in the American Hockey League all with Adirondack (1986, 1989 and 1992), Two Adams Cup Championship Rings in the Central Hockey League (Fort Worth 1978 and Indianapolis 1982), and One Riley Cup Championship Ring in the East Coast Hockey League (Toledo 1994).
Devellano’s lengthy tenure as head of hockey operations for the Red Wings is second only to the 35 years served by the late Jack Adams, the legendary G.M. credited with building the Red Wing dynasty of the 1950’s. In addition to his duties as senior vice-president, Devellano serves as the team’s alternate on the NHL’s Board of Governors.
He has been instrumental in many historical decisions in the National Hockey League, including bringing the Entry Draft to the United States for the very first time on June 13, 1987 at Joe Louis Arena. Most recently, it was at Devellano’s suggestion that the NHL instituted a new overtime format for the 1999-2000 season that includes skating four aside as well as one point for each team following a regulation tie and an additional point if a team is victorious in overtime.
Having served as a teacher and mentor to numerous front office personnel over the years, Devellano’s influence has reached several NHL clubs. Currently there are three NHL general managers who have succeeded under Devellano’s tutelage — Detroit General Manager Ken Holland, Darcy Reiger of the Buffalo Sabres and Don Waddell of the Atlanta Thrashers.
Devellano, 58, did not play professional hockey, but rose through the ranks in various capacities in his native Toronto. Joining current Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman, he became a scout with the St. Louis Blues in 1967 when the NHL expanded from six to 12 teams. Also, it was Devellano’s strong recommendation to owner Mike Ilitch that led to Scotty Bowman’s hiring by the Wings.
Joining the New York Islanders as a scout when that club was founded in 1972, Devellano’s scouting skills helped build a team that won four consecutive Stanley Cup titles (1980-83). In 1979-80, he became general manager of the Islanders’ Indianapolis (CHL) farm club and was named Minor League Executive of the Year by The Hockey News. He returned to New York in 1981 as the Islanders’ assistant general manager.
Devellano sits on the Board of the National Institute for the Blind. Most recently, Mike Ilitch named Devellano Senior Vice-President of MLB’s Detroit Tigers. Devellano resides in Sarasota, Florida.

The Wings Dave Lewis - Head Coach
Dave Lewis
Head Coach
DRW CoachesDave LewisBarry SmithJoe KocurJim Bedard
25th Head Coach in Wings 76 year history
Dave Lewis begins his first season as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, named to the position on July 17, 2002. Lewis replaces the legendary Scotty Bowman, becoming just the 25th head coach in the Red Wings' 76-year history.

Entering his 17th year with the Red Wings organization, (two as a player and 15 as a coach), Lewis has been a mainstay behind the bench holding the distinction of having worked with three different head coaches. He began in 1987 by working with Jacques Demers, followed by Bryan Murray and continuing with Scotty Bowman. Lewis' 15 years as an NHL defenseman prepared him for his coaching career as he has excelled both as a motivator and tactician behind the Red Wings' bench. His other duties include extensive video work used in scouting opponents.
Lewis, 49, joined the coaching staff immediately after retiring as a player Nov. 6, 1987, amid his 15th National Hockey League season. The 2001 -02 campaign will mark Dave's 15th consecutive year in the Detroit organization since signing as a free agent July 28, 1986. He has three Stanley Cup Championships in his career, 1997, 1998 and 2002, all with Detroit.

At the beginning of the 1998-99 season, Dave shared the head coaching responsibilities with Barry Smith through training camp and the first five regular-season games as Bowman recovered from off-season knee surgery. The Lewis/Smith combination produced 4-1-0 record (.800).
A native of Kindersley, SK, Lewis played junior hockey for Saskatoon (WHL) and was the New York Islanders' second pick (33rd overall) in the 1973 NHL Entry Draft (selected by current Red Wings Senior Vice-President Jim Devellano, the Islanders' chief scout at the time). Lewis jumped from the junior ranks straight to the NHL and never played in the minor leagues.

Dave's biggest milestone came in a Red Wings uniform when he played in his 1,000th regular-season game April 1, 1987 against Philadelphia at Joe Louis Arena. In all, he played 1,008 regular-season games with the Islanders, Los Angeles, New Jersey and Detroit. He recorded 36 goals, 187 assists and 953 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 91 playoff games with one goal, 20 assists and 143 penalty minutes.
Away from the rink, Dave is actively involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through his efforts over the past 11 years, the proceeds from the Dave Lewis Detroit Red Wings Fantasy Camp games and celebrity auctions have raised over $100,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In addition, Lewis often hosts children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation at Red Wing practices throughout the season. Two summers ago summer Lewis arranged a trip to Russia for 28 campers and their spouses for a seven-day fantasy hockey camp and historical tour.
In his spare time, Lewis enjoys the camaraderie of golf and working with the four horses his family owns.

Dave and wife Brenda live in suburban Detroit and have a son, Ryan, and a daughter, Meagan.

DENVER (AP) -- Boos and debris rained down on the ice. This wasn't the ending Colorado's fans wanted in a matchup of the NHL's two best teams and biggest rivals.

Brett Hull scored 57 seconds into overtime after two Colorado players were hit with penalties at the end of regulation, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Avalanche on Thursday night.

Detroit had a two-man advantage to start overtime after Steve Konowalchuk and Adam Foote were called for four-minute high-sticking penalties with 1.6 seconds left. Although NHL overtimes are played four-on-four, in this case the Red Wings were given a five-on-three edge to begin the period.

The crowd booed throughout the overtime and started throwing bottles and cups on the ice after Hull's hard shot from the top of the right circle went in over David Aebischer's right shoulder.
