PSV Eindhoven are the mystery team attempting to thrash out a deal with Santos for their highly-rated defender Alex.
A host of major European names have been linked with the Samba star, which has forced Santos to come out and deny talking to the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea.
Santos have stressed over the last fortnight that they expect a deal to be concluded in the near future, and the club have confirmed PSV have tabled an attractive offer after media reports suggested the Dutch outfit were the team in the frame.
"We received an official proposal at the start of the year," said Santos president Marcelo Teixeira. "It is good and we are studying it, but nothing is sealed."
It is being suggested that Alex has jetted into Eindhoven to undergo a medical and thrash out personal terms on a reported two-year deal.
PSV have confirmed they are looking to strengthen their side with the capture of the 21-year-old Brazilian.
"I cannot decline we are busy with him," PSV technical manager Frank Arnesen told VI.nl. "But we haven't reached an agreement yet."
Guus Hiddink is one of the most respected coaches in the game and Alex could well be attracted by the prospect of learning from the wily Dutchman before taking his game to the next level in the future.
Robben still hopeful of move

PSV Eindhoven starlet Arjen Robben is not happy that his transfer to Manchester United is no closer to being completed, but he is still hopeful a deal can be done.
His father and agent Hans confirmed earlier on Tuesday that the move had stalled, with the two clubs unable to agree a fee for the Dutch international.
The Dutch champions are believed to be looking for a fee close to €15 million for their young forward, but United are only thought to have offered somewhere between €7 and €10 million.
Robben is still hopeful his dream move will be completed, saying: "It could be I stay here.
"But in the world of football everything is possible and it could happen very quickly.
"What today is coming to end, can go through tomorrow.
"It can still go in any direction. But at the moment PSV and Manchester United haven't agreed anything.
"Of course I don't like that the deal hasn't been completed and I could jump up and down, but that will not help.
"I haven't got anything in my own hands. The clubs have to agree first, then I come back in the picture.
"It would be fantastic if I could play for Manchester, but at the moment I just have to wait.
"For now I have to focus on the football."
Robben travelled to United's training complex last month and it seemed a move was imminent, but PSV's demands could stop the deal in its tracks.
PSV president Harry van Raaij admits that he can understand Robben's disappointment.
"Of course Arjen will be disappointed," said van Raaij.
"He had already visited Manchester United and I had agreed a deal in principle with Peter Kenyon for him to join them in the summer.
"What I don't understand is the reason why their approach changed so much because when the offer came in it was about half of what we had spoken about.
"Given the difference between the two offers I do not see any way Arjen will join them in time for next season.
"Everything changed, I read in the newspapers that there are some problems at the club.
"Maybe that was part of it or maybe it's because Peter Kenyon left and David Gill came in, but I don't know for sure.
"I have dealt with Manchester United over the transfers of Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy but the way they have handled this is very different to the way they have done it in the past.
"At least there is no question mark over Arjen's talent and I'm sure other great clubs will be in for him as well."
The futures of PSV Eindhoven chairman Harry van Raaij and manager Guus Hiddink are in serious doubt.
Van Raaij offered Hiddink a three-year contract to become the club's technical director.
However, the club's board of directors have refused to sanction the move and now there is major doubt over the futures of the pair.
"I have reached a three-year agreement about the contract with the chairman, but the board of directors have put some extra demands to me," Hiddink revealed.
"I cannot meet those demands, I cannot agree with them."
Van Raaij added: "This is a very bad moment for PSV."
Hiddink has been linked with a return to South Korea - whom he coached at the 2002 World Cup - and speculation is now rife he could be ready to take up the challenge of leading them to the 2006 finals.
Mateja Kezman claims he will consider moving to a 'lesser' team before attempting to join one of Europe's elite clubs.
Kezman revealed recently that he is looking to leave PSV Eindhoven in the summer, comments which are sure to have alerted long-term suitors Barcelona, Manchester United and a clutch of other European sides.
Despite proving himself a regular scorer at the highest level, the Serbo-Montenegrin feels he may be better served by joining a lesser club before making the jump to a major stage.
"Maybe I have to go to a smaller club in Europe, to make a new step to secure a deal at a top European team such as Manchester United or Barcelona," Kezman told Algemeen Dagblad.
Kezman's claim may well lead to some confused looks at the Philips Stadion, as the Dutch club feel they are in the second tier of teams in Europe behind the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona.
And, Kezman may find it difficult to resist an offer from the Barcelonas of this world if they come calling in the summer.
Despite making confusing comments about his future, Kezman is adamant that he will leave PSV in the summer.
"I have done all I can at PSV," he continued. "Top goalscorer, titles, Player of the Year. It's time for a new challenge.
"If I stay it will be difficult for me to keep motivated."
Kezman ready for summer move
Friday, 30 January 2004
Mateja Kezman has admitted his wage demands will prompt PSV Eindhoven to offload him in the summer.
The Serbo-Montenegrin is one of the most vaunted strikers in Europe, having shown a penchant for scoring vital goals both in Europe and De Eredivisie.
Kezman is key to PSV manager Guus Hiddink's plans for pipping Ajax to the Eredivisie title this term, but it would appear he has little chance of retaining his services after the summer.
The striker's contract runs until 2005 and he has failed to give consideration to offers put to him by PSV's paymasters.
With the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona and a clutch of Italian sides all monitoring his progress, PSV may decide to cash in on his services in the summer.
"PSV can no longer afford me," Kezman told Eindhovens Dagblad. "The wage that I am demanding is beyond them.
"The wage I want is some way from what they are paying me at the moment.
"All this tells me it is best for everyone if I leave PSV this summer."
