Thought I'd share this with the Touched Family
If you’ve ever drifted through the misty, analog landscapes of *Boards of Canada*, you’ll know the feeling — that strange sense of memory that isn’t quite your own. For me, that same soul-stirring resonance has always led hand in hand to *Christ.*, whose music captures that ghost-in-the-tape-reel magic with an emotional gravity all its own.
From the very first compilations to his haunting remix for me, and that unforgettable Touched Live 2 set in Hastings... his presence has always felt quietly monumental.
So today, as a little thank-you and a big nod to where we came from, I’m sharing a link to his album. If you know, you know. If you don’t — consider this your invitation to tumble down the rabbit hole.
Shortly after I completed Transitory in honor of Árni mid-January, I felt compelled to do something for Lee, given his challenges at that time. I imagined the dream of finally moving to Ireland seemed a long way off in late January. So, Taibhreamh is firmly planted in a dream space. It’s amorphous and flowing through pleasant and slightly dark territory throughout the hour plus duration. In keeping with Lee’s now new home, I turned to Irish Gaelic for the title. This album is dedicated to Lee and all the innumerable hours of music he’s shared both personally and from others over the years. Now more than ever, we need this music to keep us sane in an increasingly crazy world.
"To mark its 25th anniversary, Sketch Proposals, the pioneering debut album from Ensemble (Olivier Alary), has been reissued as a free digital release via FatCat Records.
Originally released in 2000 on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label, the newly remastered edition is now available on the FatCat Webstore, Bandcamp and is streaming across all major streaming platforms.
First created in a North London flat in the late '90s, Sketch Proposals introduced Alary’s ambitious hybrid of IDM, shoegaze, and experimental pop—a singular sound that would soon lead to collaborations with Björk, Nick Knight, and a prolific film scoring career.
“That first record, rough as it was, ended up changing everything for me,” says Alary. “Looking back, I think that DIY spirit and the willingness to explore without a roadmap were exactly what made it work.”
“It’s a joy to celebrate this release 25 years on,” adds FatCat co-founder Alex Knight. “Olivier’s music arrived at a time of real experimentation and cross-pollination. Sketch Proposals still feels adventurous and emotionally resonant today.”
Alary’s roots in architecture and electroacoustic composition shaped a self-taught, intuitive approach to sound design. Created with a minimal setup—just a PC, a Yamaha DX11, a Korg MS-20, a Pro-One, and a guitar—the album captures a sense of discovery and momentum that defined the turn-of-the-century underground.
“London between 1997 and 2000 was such an exciting time,” Alary recalls. “The club and IDM scenes were thriving. We were imagining what pop could become—fractured, emotional, and forward-looking.”
Following the album’s original release on Rephlex, Alary was invited by Björk to collaborate on her albums Vespertine and Medúlla, contributing remixes and co-writing the track "Desired Constellation".
The 2025 digital reissue invites new and longtime listeners alike to revisit a landmark release that helped shape the sonic landscape of the early 2000s—and launched one of experimental music’s most quietly influential careers."
"Good morning, Europe! The store is open for today only. Everything is “pay what you can” and the store will come down before midnight Irish time, so don’t wait ;) I will see you soon with new music. Thanks, Donnacha.
Forest of Endless Sky is an 8-track sonic journey where earthbound rhythms meet celestial atmospheres. Each track weaves elements of the natural world with the infinite vastness of space—grounded yet weightless, organic yet otherworldly. From the whisper of trees to the hum of distant stars, this album explores the harmony between the grounded and the galactic, inviting listeners into a realm where forests stretch into the cosmos and gravity gives way to dreams.
Dutch maestro Kettel (Reimer Eising) is back on Analogical Force with Inmate Shuffle, his first full EP for the label since 2017’s Alacasa (AF008). This release features five tracks straight from the heart of Reimer’s universe, serving as a heartfelt reaffirmation of his unique identity. Kettel’s artistry is a testament to staying true to oneself. Artists like Reimer are not bound by fleeting trends or rigid genres; instead, he carves his own paths, constantly reinventing his sound with honesty and passion. This is why his material is reviewed again and again and serves as a clear reference for many.
While Dubio (2025), his recent full-length album inspired by the soundtrack of the acclaimed puzzle game of the same name, explored cinematic and conceptual landscapes, Inmate Shuffle takes us back to the playful, melodic, and rhythmically rich territory that first captivated his devoted audience. Five tracks, five parties. Inmate Shuffle will resonate in your head for a long time.
1994 second album by the trio of Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns, unavailable on vinyl and CD since original release. A concept album with accompanying text for each track by James Woodbourne, it also includes additional production by Portishead and Mr Scruff. Remastered from the original tapes by Matt Colton, contains “Theme” for the first time on the 2LP edition.
By the time this record came out towards the end of ‘94, The Sabres Of Paradise had evolved from a production trio into a fully fledged band, embarking on live tours and augmented for the stage by additional members such as Rich Thair, from Warp labelmates Red Snapper, and Phil Mossman, later to join LCD Soundsystem. Tapped by Noel Gallagher to support Oasis at enormodomes, the group opted instead to play clubs, student unions, and infamously, a car park in Central London. Their tour adverts contained small print specifying a policy of “no jugglers, no fire eaters, no flutes and no hippies with lawyers”.
The studio sound had shifted radically as well, utilising samples (notably on the 1930s voodoo jazz inflected “Wilmot”), live instrumentation (the heavy twang guitar riff of “Tow Truck”) and a deep love of film scores audible throughout, from the block party funk of “Theme” to the noir-ish soundscapes of the title track. The sense of the album being a soundtrack itself is underpinned by the accompanying text for each track, rumoured to have been penned by Weatherall himself under a pseudonym, each text fragment joining up to form a suitably grimy, low-lit short story. The Guardian later summed up Haunted Dancehall as “techno’s first concept album”.
for those who celebrate drone day - a late night synth drone made with deckards dream, peak, steampipe and minitaur - expanding on the title track from Lake Fire:
“Hyldýpi´s music is inspired by his spiritual connection with nature & his admiration of the Krautrock scene developed in West Germany in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The outcome is a beautiful Aural landscape - musical space, evoking a sense of being. Umbreyting is his mantra for love and healing, united and more peaceful world. These songs are Hyldýpi´s prayers of hope.
Saloop a musical faffer who found the only way to get a tune finished was to set a time limit of 1-2 days or move on. The music on this album are the results. No idea what kind of noise he'll create next. It won't be what he had in mind when he started.
To Rococo Rot ‘The Amateur View (Expanded Edition 2025)’ Limited Edition Deluxe 2LP Out May 30th
(A very limited amount of copies available at cityslang.com will include a CD copy of the i-Sound DJ-Set @ The Cooler NYC, 1998)
The Amateur View is widely hailed as one of the definitive records of late ’90s analog electronica. Released in the U.S. via Mute Records, it was named one of UNCUT’s Albums of the Year in 1999 and perfectly captured the introspective, experimental mood of the era. The album’s influence was far-reaching—so much so that Saint Etienne enlisted To Rococo Rot for their 2000 album Sound of Water. At the time, To Rococo Rot were the band of the moment—jetting across the globe to play the most cutting-edge electronica festivals, including wild WARP events where none other than Aphex Twin spun support DJ sets, The trio was invited three times by John Peel to record radio sessions in the BBC studios between 1997 and 1999.
“The artists blend analog effects with warm, electronic drones and mechanic percussion for a sound that’s unmistakably digital, yet 100% human.” — 9.3 Pitchfork
“With electronic music growing ever duller and more detached, the analog optimism of Kreidler, To Rococo Rot and their peers ... feels like a warm blanket. It’s the soul of the new machine, as comforting as it is gorgeously strange.” — Rolling Stone US
“The Amateur View works subtle modulation to its advantage, moving from the dryly ironic to the maudlin with the twist of a knob.” — SPIN
