Uefa president gets in a sweat over women's game
reszlet:
Attempts by Uefa to explain that Mr Johansson had merely been trying to suggest that top women players take the David Beckham route to sponsorship and super-stardom were apparently too late to save the Uefa president from a metaphorical yellow card. The remarks prompted a dismayed reaction from his fellow countrywomen, who are among the world's leading players and were knocked out by Norway in the semi-finals this week.
"I get really fed up with this sort of thing," Swedish international Frida Ostberg told Reuters. "In a superficial world, it is what is on the surface that sells but we should be interesting for what we do on the pitch." Her fellow international, Kristin Bengtsson, added: "We're not here to be nice-looking, we're here to play football."
With other women players joining in the criticism of the Uefa president, it seemed that, whether the weather on Sunday was rainy or not, the sweatiest figure in football might be male, elderly and in a blazer.
Ah, if only Mr Johansson had listened to the Arsenal girls' old marching song: "We are the Arsenal girls/ We don't put our hair in curls/ We don't smoke and we don't drink/ (At least that's what our parents think)."
