Dear hinemoa,
> You mention that non-finite verb forms are rare within complement IPs. How would you then say sentences like: 'John wanted to be happy.' and 'John wanted her to be happy.'? Would you use finite or infinitival constructions?
We use mostly finite construction with imperative mood. In Hungarian usually imperative mood is used when Western languages apply conjunctive. The usage of imperative mood is based on the concept that sentence ‘John wanted to be happy’ is treated as a kind of reported speech in Hungarian: (E.1) ‘John wanted [to be happy]’ < ‘John wanted {= said what he wanted}: “Let me be happy!”’. That is: (H.1a) ‘János azt akarfa, hogy [boldog legyen].’ < ‘János akarta {= mondta, hogy mit akar}: „Legyek boldog”’.
(E.2) ‘John wanted her [to be happy]’ < ‘John wanted {= said to her what he wanted}: “Be happy!”’. That is: (H.2a) ‘János azt akarta, hogy [a nő boldog legyen].’ < ‘János akarta {= mondta a nőnek, hogy mit akar}: „Legyél boldog”’.
(N.B. There’s no gender distinction in Hungarian, therefore pronoun she is rendered as a nő ‘the woman’. Imperative mood has full paradigm in Hungarian, however it doesn’t express tense.)
Note that sentence (H.1a) can be rendered by infinitive construction, though. (H.1b) János [boldog] akar [lenni] ‘John wanted [to be happy]’. But verb akar ‘want’ acts here like a modal auxiliary, i.e. desiderative auxiliary: the subject of the clausal complement can be only PRO. To render (E.2) with an infinitive construction, you have to exchange verb to be with e.g. to make and use construction (E.1): (H.2b) János [boldoggá] akarta [tenni a nőt] ‘John wanted [to make her happy]’ (N.B. Second complement of verb tesz ‘make’ takes the translative case, cf. boldog|gá.) |
