GARY Megson is keeping his fingers crossed Albion receive international clearance for Zoltan Gera in time for Saturday’s Premiership opener at Blackburn.

The £1.5million recruit from Ferencvaros was ineligible for the Baggies’ final pre-season friendly against Boavista, which finished goalless, as the Hungarian Football Federation have yet to fax through the necessary paperwork to the English FA.

“We’re still awaiting international clearance from Hungary to enable us to play Zoltan, although he’s got a little knock so we would have probably pulled him out of the Boavista game anyway,” said Megson.

“But I’m hopeful we’ll receive it in time for the Blackburn game. It shouldn’t take too long.”

Megson granted Albion’s most high-profile signing in years, Kanu, his non-competitive debut by introducing the former Arsenal striker as a half-time replacement for Geoff Horsfield.

And the Baggies manager was pleased with what he saw, claiming: “He showed some good touches.”

Megson experimented with a 3-5-2 formation for the first time this pre-season but is still keeping supporters guessing about which system – and personnel – he will start with at Ewood Park.

“We played with three at the back because it’s something we wanted to look at,” he said.

“But I’m tired of talking about systems. I believe you only defend in a system – you don’t attack in one.”

Megson added: “This was our final pre-season friendly but pre-season isn’t finished for us yet.

“Fitness wise I’m happy, but there are other things we need to do. For example, we haven’t worked on set pieces yet, which we will work on next week.

“In terms of who we start with at Blackburn, there are certain people who will definitely play and there are others who can still get themselves into the team.”

Megson revealed Albion are still working hard behind the scenes to add to their seven summer recruits and he is hopeful the club will see the fruits of their labour before the transfer window closes on August 31.

“We’re trying to bring more players in but it’s easier said than done,” he admitted.

“I know the positions I would like to try and strengthen and it’s something we are working on.”
