Ferguson: Beckham a World Cup doubt
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted David Beckham is a doubt for the World Cup.
The England captain suffered a broken bone in his foot during the Champions League quarter-final second leg win over Deportivo La Coruna at Old Trafford.
Ferguson said the player will be out of action for six to eight weeks, ruling him out of the remainder of United's Champions League and Premiership campaigns.
And - with England's World Cup opener against Sweden on June 2 - Beckham may miss the action in Japan and Korea.
Ferguson said: "He is doubtful for the World Cup - I think that's doubtful.
"He has a broken metatarsis bone in his foot. It's six to eight weeks and that's a blow for Manchester United."
Despite his initial frustration, Ferguson would not condemn Pedro Duscher's tackle.
The Scot added: "The game of football is about tackles and I think the player maybe had to go for it (the ball)."
Ferguson, who revealed he expects Beckham to be back at United's Carrington training ground on Thursday, added: "I've not spoken to him yet but I'm sure he's obviously disappointed."
