Beaten United put Van Gaal top of their list
Louis van Gaal emerged as favourite to take over at Manchester United on the night their championship bandwagon was brought to a halt by Liverpool.

As Sir Alex Ferguson saw Danny Murphy score the only goal at Old Trafford, Dutchman Van Gaal became the No.1 name at the top of the list of candidates to succeed him this summer.
Van Gaal leaves his job as coach of Holland today and United are so confident they will get their man that they hope to be in a position to make an official announcement within weeks.

Murphy's 85th-minute strike at the near post lifted Liverpool into third, just two points behind United. The midfielder also scored a spectacular winner when Liverpool won at Old Trafford last season.
Soccernet can reveal that United's plc board have now identified former Ajax, Barcelona and Holland coach Van Gaal as the man to succeed Ferguson.

The Dutchman has already indicated that he would love the job and, having learned that England coach Sven Goran Eriksson is not ready to walk out on a contract that runs until 2006, United turned their attention to Van Gaal.
Chief executive Peter Kenyon said last summer that Ferguson's successor must have a record of European success, the ability to develop young players and have good English.

While Van Gaal has been most recently in the news for parting company with Holland after failing to qualify for the World Cup, United are more impressed by a record going back more than a decade.
He first came to prominence with his team of home-grown players at Ajax, where nursed the likes of Patrick Kluivert through the club's youth system to claim the Champions League in 1995.

If appointed, Van Gaal will bring recently-sacked Ajax boss Co Adriaanse to Old Trafford as head of his youth set-up, a move United have already approved. Kenyon is well acquainted with Van Gaal, a fluent English speaker, through the links he formed with Ajax during his previous career at sportswear company Umbro.
Crucially, the Dutchman is also favoured by Ferguson, whom he impressed during their meetings through Europe's G14 organisation and United's games against Barcelona in Europe.

In his autobiography, Ferguson named Van Gaal as one the three coaches he respects most, along with Marcelo Lippi of Juventus and Bayern's Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Azért bízzunk benne, hogy nem ő lesz!
