United line up Parma's Cannavaro for Ł28m

Sunday October 7, 2001
The Observer

Manchester United are planning to solve their defensive shortcomings by smashing another world transfer record, according to sources in Italy.
They are said to be preparing to make the Italian international Fabio Cannavaro, aged 28, the most expensive defender in world football by persuading him to move to Old Trafford from Parma for Ł28 million.

The move would run counter to chief executive Peter Kenyon's recent insistence that the club would not make more big-name signings this season, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed concern at his side's recent defensive frailty. After selling Jaap Stam to Lazio, Ferguson signed the former France captain, Laurent Blanc. But the move has failed to plug the defensive gaps and United have conceded nine goals in their past three away games.

Talks are understood to have taken place between United and Parma during the last week with a view to completing a transfer within the next few weeks. If a deal is done before Christmas, Cannavaro would be eligible to play in the second phase of the Champions League, starting on 20 November, even though he appeared in the summer qualifying competition with Parma.

Cannavaro became a cornerstone of Italy's national side after joining Parma in 1995. He stands only 5ft 8in but has won 49 caps since moving from his hometown club, Napoli. His strength is timing and his wonderful reading of the game.

He was a ballboy at Napoli during the Diego Maradona-inspired glory years in the late 1980s and he began his career there at 16. In 1995 he moved to Parma and won Uefa Cup and Italian Cup winners medals in 1998-99. A source close to Parma said: 'United are keen and the player has been flattered by their interest.'
