HISTORY MAKER

Everton’s teenage star Wayne Rooney made history on Wednesday night when he became the youngest player ever to feature in a senior international match for England.

At just 17-years and 145 days, he comfortably beats the record by some 111 days that was set in 1879 by James Prinsep when he turned out for the national side against Scotland at the Kensington Oval.

The Blues striker started the proceedings on the substitutes’ bench but was introduced after the break as Sven Goran Eriksson made wholesale changes in order to run the rule over the best young talent English football has to offer.

Rooney, was, of course, the focal point for the media and crowds attention and the boyhood Blue from Croxteth didn’t look out of place as he faced established internationals in the Australia set-up.

Chants of 'Rooney, Rooney' echoed around the packed stadium on numerous occasions and the England faithful seem to have taken quickly to a player who will undoubedtly feature in the squad for next round of Euro 2004 qualifying matches.

Despite the introduction of Rooney and England’s young guns in the second half, they could do little to reverse the damage the senior players had done in the opening 45 minutes.

Former Everton striker Francis Jeffers pulled one back for England after Australia had taken a 2-0 lead through through Popovic and Kewell. However, Brett Emerton sealed it for the Socceroos with a well-taken strike on 80 minutes.

Bill Kenwright made the short trip from London’s Theatreland to experience history in the making and Evertonfc.tv was also there to keeps tabs on England’s and EVERTON’S great new talent on his debut night.
