"The sixth-century Roman historian Zosimus claim that at this point Gerontius, non trusting the strenght of his own troops, formed an alliance with the Vandals, Alans, and Sueves, who were now pillaging southwestern France. In 409, Gerontius agreed to let these marauders cross the Pyrenees unopposed in return for their aid against Justus .. The Vandals, Alans, and Sueves were left to their devices. They could not return to Gaul, now swarming with Constantius's imperial troops, so they decided to settle in the Iberian Peninsula" (K.E. Carr: Vandals to Visigoths: rural settlement patterns in early medieval Spain; University of Michigan Press, 2002, 25–6.) |
