The European Union
The European Union was established in 1992 when 12 countries* signed the Treaty of Maastricht.

In 1995 three other countries** joined the EU and on May 1, 2004 another 10 countries*** – including Hungary – also took up membership.

On 1 January 2007 Romania and Bulgaria also joined the EU.
