The Stolen and Perverted Writings of Homer & Ovid: of Plato & Cicero. which all Men ought to contemn: are set up by artifice against the Sublime of the Bible. but when the New Age is at leisure to Pronounce; all will be set right: & those Grand Works of the more ancient & consciously & professedly Inspired Men, will hold their proper rank, & the Daughters of Memory shall become the Daughters of Inspiration. Shakspeare & Milton were both curbd by the general malady & infection from the silly Greek & Latin slaves of the Sword.
Rouze up O Young Men of the New Age! set your foreheads against the ignorant Hirelings! Suffer not the fash [i] onable Fools to depress your powers by the prices they pretend to give for contemptible works or the expensive advertizing boasts that they make of such works; believe Christ & his Apostles that there is a Class of Men whose whole delight is in Destroying. both her parents were flawed; that both of them, in the months and weeks before her mother’s suicide in 1963, were suffering in a similar, if not precisely the same, kind of hell.
Now, with the arrival of volume two, she rides to the rescue once again, having decided that the 14 letters her mother wrote to her psychiatrist, Dr Ruth Beuscher, between 1960 and 1963 should be included in its pages after all (these letters, the existence of which she did not know until 2016, were controversially put up for sale by a book dealer in the US last year; as a result, several newspapers were able to quote from them; they’re now in the possession of Plath’s alma mater, Smith College, Massachusetts). As she notes in her foreword to the book, ultimately she could not bear the idea that this correspondence, however raw and private, would remain buried in a library, for all that such an option was in her power. The thought that the sensationalist phrases reported out of context by the press would go unchallenged in the public memory left her feeling “suffocated” – for which reason she found herself ringing Faber, her mother’s publisher, at the very last moment (“there was just time”, she writes, relievedly).
These letters don’t make volume two, which covers the period from Plath’s marriage until her death, worth your time in its entirety. Running to more than 1,000 pages, it comes with all the same problems as its predecessor. The vast majority of the letters are again to Aurelia Schober Plath, are concerned mostly with homemaking (after a period spent living and working in the US and London, Plath and Hughes moved to Devon, where she gave birth to her second child, Nicholas) and are written in her brightest, most determined voice – the one that brooks no argument, that allows for no hint of a shadow. Again, the editors, Peter K Steinberg and Karen V Kukil, identify every letter according to which institution holds it, rather than by where it was written, which makes life laborious for the reader. But Frieda was right: the letters to Beuscher are extraordinary, throwing vital light on Plath’s mental state in the period after she discovered Hughes’s affair with Assia Wevill.

At the fag end of this at once elegiac and emetic memoir, Christopher Howse observes: “Obviously a painter like Francis Bacon would not have painted as he did if he had not fallen into Soho.” But I wonder if this is really obvious at all? Bacon was the standout celebrity of London’s little Bohemia, not only in the 80s, but the 50s, 60s and 70s as well – his was also a burgeoning international celebrity, such that in the years since his death he’s come to be recognised as the pre-eminent figurative painter of the second half of the 20th century. That it should have been this tight grid of streets – the area pretty much contained by Wardour Street to the west, Charing Cross Road to the east, Oxford Street to the north and Shaftesbury Avenue to the south – that engendered such genius would seem as preposterous as the assertion that it was the Bateau-Lavoir alone that inspired Picasso’s cubism.
But then all bohemian milieus are really the creation of their minor not their major figures – the big beasts cruise through, ships in the night, en route for more exalted destinations, leaving bobbing in their wake parasitic poetasters, ready to cash in. It would be unfair, perhaps, to class Howse as one such: his sensitive, well-drawn book does a good job of conveying a particular place at a particular time, without either undue reverence or the anachronisms that dog hindsight. In particular, Howse is flinty-eyed about what principally animated Soho’s high spirits during the 80s (and the previous three decades for that matter): alcohol.
If Bacon – a non-stop champagne tippler – was its presiding deity, standing a few feet from the bar of the Colony Room Club, above a crap trattoria on Dean Street, then Soho’s postwar prophet was indubitably Jeffrey Bernard, who succeeded Julian MacLaren-Ross as its best known chronicler. Bernard’s favoured hangout was the Coach and Horses on the corner of Romilly and Greek streets, which at that time was presided over by the self-styled “Soho’s Rudest Landlord”, Norman Balon. I never hung out much in the Coach – as it was known to Bernard, and its other regulars – or in the French, round the corner, where Gaston Bachelard’s waxed moustaches wavered over the bar like some signpost to a hipper future; but I knew the Colony Room Club well in the late 1970s and early 80s (giving me a little seniority over Howse), and can testify to the – for the most part – accuracy of his depiction of its crapulent denizens. Bernard, besides penning his celebrated Low Life columns for the Spectator, was also a career alcoholic – and it’s this, a sort of existential commitment to the ruination of chronic drinking, that marked out the Soho of this era.
There are still one or two illegal after-hours drinking clubs operating in the locale – remarkably, there also remain a few of the so-called “walk-ups”, brothels that occupy the upper storeys of the elegant Georgian houses that characterise the quarter. Meanwhile, the street-low-life component of Soho has been on the rise, such that the legendary “front line” for hard drug dealing has been resurrected around Shaftesbury Avenue and its environs. But for the most part, this Stygian cockpit is under assault – not from the guardians of morality, but the property developers who are the true arbiters of our age. Shiny developments on Archer Street and around the new Crossrail station at Tottenham Court Road seem to me to be silvery spikes hammered into Soho’s vampiric heart.
This Stygian cockpit is under assault – from the property developers who are the true arbiters of our age
Howse regrets the crowds of youngsters in from the ’burbs, who filled up the pubs and clubs towards the end of his nominated decade – but neglects to mention it was the Blair government’s liberalisation of the licensing laws that made this possible, together with its obvious sequel: the superannuation of the afternoon and after-hours drinking clubs that had supplied its 60% proof lifeblood. He also, as I’ve noted, wishes to make a case for the Soho of these years as a crucible of creativity, and steps aside from his anecdotes about this or that pisshead to provide little disquisitions on painters and poets, who, with Bacon being the obvious exception, are mostly unknown to the wider world. Howse mentions the Groucho Club – which opened right next door to the Colony Room in 1985 – scarcely at all, remarking only that while Bernard et al despised the Groucho for its association with the worlds of “meejah” and advertising, they nonetheless availed themselves of its superior facilities and tolerant staff. Of that self-appointed Queen of Soho Julie Burchill we hear nothing – and that’s altogether a relief, because along with her contrarian, cocaine-fuelled grandstanding would have come the whole wider world of the 1990s, with Britpop, the Young British Artists and the final extinction of anything with any more than a pretence to be avant garde.
It was and is the micro-locales of Soho that preoccupy Howse – so much so that for two set-piece anecdotes of his era, he supplies diagrams of the interiors of the Coach and Horses and the Colony Room Club, so that those unfamiliar with the establishments can imaginatively place themselves at the centre of the action. He gives us the blow-by-blow of a raid conducted against Bernard for running an illegal horse racing book in the first establishment, and the constabulary attending the latter because its proprietor, Ian Board, had allegedly smashed up a customer’s mobile phone.
While only too happy to laud him as an enemy of these ghastly gadgets almost avant la lettre, I must state for the record that Board was a nasty piece of work, with a vicious tongue and little of the wit Howse ascribes to him, unless you consider peppering your discourse with “cunt” in all its possible variations – nounal, adjectival, verbal, conjunctive – to be hilarious. His predecessor at the Colony was Muriel Belcher, the original Queen of Soho, but while Board also aspired(on grounds of sexuality, at least) to the same title, the truth was that like most chronic alcoholics he was an embittered and resentful creep. He was a pander and a pimp as well. Howse seems to have been blinded – perhaps by his spiritual inclinations – to the truly dark side of Soho. I was privy to major drug deals that were set up in the Colony, as well as other genuinely criminal enterprises, rather than merely farcical ones.
Howse ponders whether the Bohemian mores of Soho inspired any real social changes, and suggests that it was in their contempt for money, vested privilege and worldly recognition that its devotees distinguished themselves. I have my doubts: he allocates a considerable portion of the book to the Private Eye crowd, who memorably lunched at the Coach; and while the journal may have an honourable tradition when it comes to speaking truth to power, at a social level it has mostly comprised a sniggering in‑crowd of ex-public schoolboy establishmentarians. No, if Soho was notable for anything during these years, it was that the former haven of out gay men – and a few women – was losing its singularity. While around the corner in Old Compton Street things grew gayer and gayer, with same-sex couples walking proudly hand-in-hand and gay-friendly businesses opening, inside the Colony Room Club things grew greyer and grimmer, as the dwindling handful of old Polari speakers, like some lost Amazonian tribe, faced their miserable extinction.
But most miserably extinguished of all was the putatively straight (and really rather misogynistic, as Howse concedes) Bernard. Tiring of the endless physical depredations of his chosen lifestyle, which included by this stage kidney dialysis and an amputated leg, he effectively killed himself in 1997: inviting friends to a “party” that began when he forwent treatment, and ended with his death. Howse refused to attend, presumably because as a Catholic convert he couldn’t morally sanction an act of felo de se. It’s a strange coda to a book about bohemia, and I can’t help but see in Howse’s privileging of transcendent morality over personal amity a warped allegory of Soho’s own slow extinction by impersonal market forces.

Marlowe megdörzsölte a homlokát. Amikor a kutyák beugrottak a kocsiba, összeszorult a szíve. Amikor a zsákmánnyal közeledik a kocsihoz, izgatott farokcsóválással várják. Megszagoltatja velük a szatyrokat. A tegnapi gyúrástól fáradt, strandra kellene menni. Marlowe jó tanítványaként megverte a net-sakkot, schubert és a melankolia azonban nem engedi strandra.
Schubert: 6. Sinfonie D 589 ∙ hr-Sinfonieorchester ∙ Antonello Manacorda
James takes an interesting approach to his subject: he’s not trying to persuade us of the truth of this religion or that, or to unpack some complexities of dogma, or to interpret religious stories for the new 20th century. The book is about what the title says: religious experience – what it feels like to be converted, or to lose one’s faith, or to be in a state of mystical ecstasy, or of existential doubt. James’s examples are drawn from the testimonies of believers and unbelievers alike, and the question of whether there is a God, and whether Jesus Christ is his son, and so forth, is of little interest to James’s main enquiry: only the effects of believing it matter here. For example, we may doubt that the Virgin Mary actually, in fact, physically appeared to Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes (we may doubt that there ever was a Virgin Mary in the first place) but the vision, or whatever it was, was clearly profoundly meaningful to Bernadette, and her account of it was meaningful to many others, and it certainly had an effect on her and the life she led.
Trying to understand superstition rationally is like trying to pick up something made of wood by using a magnet
And of course she’s not alone. Countless thousands of thoughtful and intelligent people have had experiences of a kind that they call religious. James paid them the compliment of taking these experiences seriously, and produced a classic of psychological insight. But could there be a Varieties of Magical Experience? Could the mental universe that produced witch bottles and sigil, and grimoires, and the whole idea of magic itself, be rich enough to sustain an examination of that sort?
The universe of magic is a large place. It contains phenomena ranging from simple good luck charms to complicated systems of belief and practice such as astrology and alchemy, and it comes to us from prehistory, and from every part of the world, and it still flourishes today. The variety of ideas and objects it contains is almost limitless; the one thing they have in common is that rationalism would scoff at all of them as absurd, outdated, meaningless superstitions that aren’t worth wasting time on.
But rationalism doesn’t make the magical universe go away. Possibly because I earn my living as a writer of fiction, and possibly because it’s just the sensible thing to do, I like to pay attention to everything I come across, including things that evoke the uncanny or the mysterious. Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto (I am human, I consider nothing human alien to me). My attitude to magical things is very much like that attributed to the great physicist Niels Bohr. Asked about the horseshoe that used to hang over the door to his laboratory, he’s claimed to have said that he didn’t believe it worked but he’d been told that it worked whether he believed in it or not. When it comes to belief in lucky charms, or rings engraved with the names of angels, or talismans with magic squares, it’s impossible to defend it and absurd to attack it on rational grounds because it’s not the kind of material on which reason operates. Reason is the wrong tool. Trying to understand superstition rationally is like trying to pick up something made of wood by using a magnet.
I have plenty of superstitions, which are my own and no one else’s (I don’t believe that anyone else would feel more able to write a novel, for example, if they used the only kind of pen and paper that works for me) but one of the interesting things about Spellbound, the Ashmolean exhibition, is that it illustrates beliefs that many people in many places and during many centuries have held in common. Belief in witches, for one thing, is more or less worldwide. In Christian countries it reached a pitch of hysterical panic between the 15th and the late 18th centuries, at a time when tensions between Protestant and Catholic powers were at their highest, and when the medieval world of faith was being challenged by the new thinking of the Enlightenment. Among other things, it was a systematic exercise of cruelty and horror: during this period, writes Malcolm Gaskill in the exhibition catalogue, “there were around 10,000 trials for witchcraft in continental Europe, the British Isles and North American colonies”.
Unlike many human failings, this was not entirely the result of stupidity. Many intelligent people believed that witchcraft existed, and that it was right and proper to stamp it out by killing those who practised it. Nor is that cast of mind safely buried in the past. Until quite recently, people known to be intelligent have felt it was acceptable to put their names to arguments like this: “If we really thought that there were people going about who had sold themselves to the devil and received supernatural powers from him in return and were using these powers to kill their neighbours or drive them mad or bring bad weather – surely we would all agree that if anyone deserved the death penalty, then these filthy quislings did?” That was CS Lewis, in Mere Christianity, 1952.
Whether witches were “filthy quislings” or harmless village healers, they and those who believed in witchcraft and magic existed in a shared mental framework of hidden influences and meanings, of significances and correspondences, whether angelic, diabolic, or natural. Everything in the exhibition testifies to a near-universal belief in the existence of an invisible, imaginary world that could affect human life and be affected in turn by those who knew how to do it; and so do millions of other objects of similar kinds collected, exhibited, studied, or uncollected, unknown, lost, throughout the world and every period of history. As do legends, and ghost stories, and folk tales. If anything is a permanent fact of human nature, this is.
I find it endlessly fascinating, and I call that world “imaginary” not to disparage or belittle it. Imagination is one of our highest faculties, and wherever it appears, however it “bodies forth / The forms of things unknown” (Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream), I want to treat it with respect. At its most intense it becomes a kind of perception, as in William Blake’s notion of “Twofold Vision”, by which he means what we see when we look “not with but through the eye”: the state of mind in which we can “see a World in a Grain of Sand / And a Heaven in a Wild Flower”. Other poets describe something similar: in Wordsworth’s “Ode on Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood” he recalls a time “when meadow, grove, and stream, / The earth, and every common sight, / To me did seem / Apparelled in celestial light, / The glory and the freshness of a dream.” Thomas Traherne’s vision of “orient and immortal wheat” in the everyday corn comes from the same apprehension.
I’m relying on poetry to make this point because I think that poetry itself is a kind of enchantment. The effect that certain lines and images can have on us can’t be explained by translating them into simple modern English. The very form is part of the meaning, and the sound the poem makes works like a spell on our senses and not only on our minds. But it’s not just true of poetry. Everything that touches human life is surrounded by a penumbra of associations, memories, echoes and correspondences that extend far into the unknown. In this way of seeing things, the world is full of tenuous filaments of meaning, and the very worst way of trying to see these shadowy existences is to shine a light on them.
This shadow world – the state that Keats called “Negative Capability, that is when a man is capable of being in uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact & reason” – is where the imagination is at home, and so are ghosts and dreams and gods and devils and witches. There, possibilities are unlimited, and nothing is forbidden.
But we have to be clear about what our imagination is. What it isn’t is just a fanciful way of telling a story that isn’t true, or a pretty decoration that we apply to something else to make it attractive, and that isn’t fundamentally important itself. I have a high regard for the scientific writing of Richard Dawkins, but I think that sometimes he expresses a view of the imagination that I simply can’t agree with: “We don’t have to invent wildly implausible stories: we have the joy and excitement of real, scientific investigation and discovery to keep our imaginations in line.” (The Magic of Reality, 2011: my italics). If we have to keep our imaginations in line, it’s because we don’t trust them not to misbehave. What’s more, only scientific investigation can disclose what’s real.
On the contrary, I’d rather say that there are times when we have to keep our reason in line. I daresay that the state of Negative Capability, where imagination rules, is in fact where a good deal of scientific discovery begins. In the old expression, reason is a good servant but a bad master, and its powers are limited: no work of art was ever reasoned into existence, for example. David Hume was right: reason is (and should be) the slave of the passions, not their governor. Or as William James put it: “In the metaphysical and religious sphere, articulate reasons are cogent for us only when our inarticulate feelings of reality have already been impressed in favour of the same conclusion.”
The important thing is to be aware of both. Imagination can give us an empathetic understanding of the world of magic; reason reminds us that the cast of mind that persecuted witches is still alive. The Home Office’s ‘hostile environment’ policy appeals to the same dark instinct. The Varieties of Magical Experience still has to be written, as far as I know; and it will only be done successfully by someone who engages the subject with both reason and imagination.
1. A progresszív terhelés
könnyű túledzeni magunkat ezzel a módszerrel
3. A negatív szakasz fontossága
Na, ebben a negatív szakaszban keletkezik a rostokban a legnagyobb sérülés.

a gondolkodás veszélyes.

Szereted a reggeli terem nyugis hangulatát.
A szokott arcok rendíthetetlenül nyomják a szokott edzésüket.
Lejött a másik páros is.
Kezdenek befutni a nyuggerek is.
Kezd beszállingózni a fiatalabb korosztály is.
A 3 órát edző vállalkozó szintén proteinezik.
Lassan a te edzésed is a végére ér… De holnap, új nap, új edzés vár, amikor ismét visszatérsz a reggeli edzőterem sajátos hangulatába, ami igazi kis nyugalom szigete számodra a mindennapos hajtás közepette.
ücsörgés csontvárytól a louvre hammurapi-sztéléig, a vak egér mocskos asztalától a zöld dombig, a rammsteinig, és a triatlonos bringától a gym shoulder gépéig.
Hétvégeken mindig Beethoven zenekari művei bömböltek a házban. Velük nőtt fel. A lemezeket moszkvában (is) vette. Ez a hatvanas évek végén, a hetvenes évek elején történt. Minden hangjegyet magába szívottt tehát már kisgyerekként - de jellemző módon a ritmusokat, a "hosszúságot" is. Az ötvenes-hatvanas évek lemezeinek idejében szóló beethovenek voltak számára autentikusak. A nyitányok, szimfóniák, stb.
parsifal hendrix az erdőkre, ligetekre, patakokra, mezőkre gondolt. kb. 1O éven át csavarogta őket végig különféle kutyáival, moszkvai őrkutyával, kaukázusi juhásszal, német doggal, részegn vagy másnaposan. reggeltől estéig, délutáni munkától késő éjszakáig, elmenekülve a civilizáció elől, a társadalmi elvárások elől,zuhogó esőben, kánikulában. míg mások a karrierjüket építették ő csavargott, menekült, létet fejtett, meditált ájulásig.
