Red Wings weighs A321 as back-up to Tu-204SM
Russian carrier Red Wings is looking at the Airbus A321 as a contingency to the Tupolev Tu-204SM, having cut back its initial commitment for the new type from 44 to just 15.
Red Wings negotiated a deal for 44 Tu-204SMs in 2010, but this plan lapsed after lessor Ilyushin Finance lost interest and the flight-test programme suffered delays.
Certification is not expected before autumn 2012 and a senior management source at the carrier says: "We continue to work out mutually agreeable solutions with United Aircraft, its suppliers and financial institutions. But the time runs fast and the window of opportunity is closing."
Red Wings is looking at acquiring 22-28 A321s as a contingency plan. The carrier believes falling prices for the type - as well as used Boeing 737s and 757s - are a threat to the Tu-204SM project.
Effective monthly lease rates are also "disproportionately higher" for the Tupolev compared with the Airbus, the source indicates, owing to peculiarities of the lease market and aircraft finance package structuring in Russia.
Red Wings is retaining faith in the Tu-204SM's terms of purchase, which it describes as a mix of "proven and some very innovative solutions" which focus on the "most common issues" of Russian commercial aviation, notably maintenance.
However, the source adds that Russian government subsidies for domestic products are "insufficient" to enable the Tu-204 to "fit into market realities". The carrier believes a broader application of other principles, such as power-by-the-hour schemes for the type's engines, would render Russian airliners more competitive in the market.
Russia's United Aircraft is to modify all in-service Sukhoi Superjet 100s to eliminate a defect at the centre of a gear-retraction incident involving an Aeroflot aircraft
On 16 March the pilots of the aircraft - operating flight SU709 to Astrakhan - returned to Moscow Sheremetyevo shortly after take-off at 16:58, after a door of the nose landing-gear refused to close. The twinjet landed safely at 18:06 after having burnt excess fuel.
There were no injuries among the 65 passengers and four crew on board.
United Aircraft says the type requires a shop visit to address the problem, traced to a broken link in the nose-gear door's linkage. The nose gear strut itself was found to be intact, and it retracted and extended normally.
Work on all in-service Superjets - Aeroflot operates six and Armavia one - will be carried out "during one week", says United Aircraft. The door that failed to close after take-off is located aft, on the starboard side.
United Aircraft points out that the failure did not threaten flight safety "as confirmed by a Superjet failure analysis".
Russia working on quiet supersonic business jet Flight International (14Mar12, 249 words)
A major Russian aeronautical research agency has launched preliminary design work for a quiet supersonic business jet that could fly over populated areas.
The Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) will develop the preliminary design in partnership with several Russian companies, including aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi and engine maker NPO Saturn,TsAGI says.
An official conceptual image of the aircraft shows it with a long, pointed nose and as many as four engines mounted on top of the aft fuselage. The aircraft also features twin vertical tails and long, thin wings.
The goal of the project is to establish Russia's aeronautics industry as a technology leader in a potential new market for business aviation, TsAGI says.
Sergei Lyapunov, deputy director general of TsAGI, says the broad spectrum of industry and research organisations involved in the project is unprecedented in Russian aeronautics.
TsAGI says a preliminary assessment suggests the supersonic aircraft should generate the same noise level as future subsonic aircraft for the civil market. In addition to completing the design, the research team will also assess the "promising domestic engines" that could power the new aircraft.
The concept of a Russian supersonic business jet has been on the drawing board for decades. In the early 1990s, Sukhoi partnered Gulfstream to develop a design of the S-21. Sukhoi continues to list a "supersonic business jet" on its website as an ongoing project, without elaborating further. Tupolev has also proposed the Tu-444 supersonic business jet, advertising 4h flight times between Moscow and New York.
Off, de mégsem.
Ukraine's Antonov design bureau and the Kharkov-based airframer KSAMC have been listed among the entities open to investment this year under an extensive state privatisation programme.
The government has been keen to reform the country's economy and, over the last few months, has been finalising a draft law on privatisation of state property for 2011-14.
Adoption of this law, it said, would create conditions for privatisation to take a "primary role" as an "instrument of transformation" of property in Ukraine.
In a detailed statement on the programme, the government said it would provide a mechanism to privatise entities for which state ownership is "economically impractical".
As a result, it added, the share of the public sector in the country's economy would be cut to around 25-30% of gross domestic product, and reduce the "burden" on public sector management.
"At the same time the private capital raised - including foreign capital - will be crucial to accelerating the restructuring of the Ukrainian economy," it said.
Both Antonov and KSAMC are to be "made available for investors" this year, along with power station operators, liquor producers and the Kharkov metro.
The government estimates that, over the period of the scheme, it could raise up to $7.5 billion.
Russia's United Aircraft has a joint venture with Antonov that became operational last year, which intends to co-operate on civil aviation projects.
Under the privatisation programme the government plans to encourage small investors to become shareholders and lift limitations which have previously hampered privatisation efforts.
IRKUT to Lead with 180 Passenger Model
By Christine Boynton, ATW Daily News | Feb. 16, 2012
Russian aircraft manufacturer IRKUT said at the Singapore Airshow Wednesday it plans to sign contracts for further construction of the MC-21 soon, with manufacturers of aircraft systems. Already on board are Pratt & Whitney, Rockwell Collins, Eaton, Goodrich, Hamilton Sundstrand and Zodiac Aerospace.
Based on the demand it has seen and contracts it has already signed, IRKUT said it will initially start with its 180 passenger model, the MC-21-300. Aeroflot and lessor Ilyushin Finance are two of its major customers; Malaysia Airlines is planning to order a "big bunch" of the aircraft, IRKUT said.
The Russian manufacturer said the aircraft will have 7 percent better aerodynamic characteristics, 23 percent better fuel savings, and more than 50 percent in sound reductions, compared to its main competitors.
IRKIT said the design of the aircraft is "practically frozen," and should be more finalized in another two to three months.
