This fresco of the Good Shepherd was found on the ceiling of the Vault of Lucina in the Catacomb of Callixtus in Rome.
The construction of the vault itself has been dated to the second half of the 2nd century, but the use of the red and green lines to divide the space (similar to the chambers under San Sebastiano) has suggested the first half or middle of the 3rd century for this fresco.
The image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd was an especially popular motif in the early Christian centuries.
It was based in several biblical passages, including the 23rd Psalm and sayings of Jesus, and is also an adaptation of a popular pagan image.

''I am a classical archaeologist, with a degree from Brown University, who teaches ancient art history at the University of Georgia. In my research, I have constantly pushed myself to master different methodologies. I started out as a specialist in mythology on architectural sculptures from Greek temples. I then expanded this work into mythology in ancient and later art, up to the present. Then I became interested in archival research, and have worked with documents in this country and in Rome. I then realized that the most important and definitive contributions to archaeology were being made by archaeologists working in collaboration with scientists. My collaborative research in archaeological science has involved analyses of samples of white marble from Roman antiquities, to determine the location of the quarries that were the sources of the marbles. Éva: Érdekes oldalakra jutsz el. Látom, vannak ott már ismerős képek is. Érdekes ennek az elefántcsontnak a perem törése... De lehet, hogy csak a kép miatt tűnik nem csont hatásúnak... De mit is okoskodok. :) Szívesen nézegetem, böngészgetem a kincseidet azon az oldalon. :) ... lentebb is van egy szarkofág relief, amin előfordul a dombormű helyett a teljesen kiemelkedő szoborszerű ábrázolás, bár csak a növénymotívumnál. (Ezt csak úgy megjegyeztem.)

''Das Lararium (Plural: Lararien) war im römischen Haus der Kultschrein der lares familiares, der Schutzgötter des Hauses bzw. der Familie.
Das Lararium befand sich ursprünglich meist im Atrium. Mit der Verlegung des Herdes aus dem Atrium in eine separate Küche wurde auch das Lararium verlegt, häufig in Küche, Pistrinum oder das Schlafzimmer, manchmal auch in das Peristyl oder den Garten.
Die Befunde in Pompeji sprechen dafür, dass das Lararium oft nur gemalt war, es gibt auch zahlreiche Funde aufwendig ausgestatteter Lararien. Neben den Laren wurden auch Bildnisse anderer Schutzgötter aufgestellt werden. Die (als unzuverlässig geltende) Historia Augusta berichtet von Alexander Severus, er habe die Bildnisse von Apollonios von Tyana, Christus, Abraham und Orpheus aufgestellt. Außerdem wurden im Lararium auch häufig die Ahnenbilder aufgestellt.
Der Begriff ist erst aus der Kaiserzeit belegt. Vorher nannte man die Schreine sacrarium, sacellum oder aedicula.
Die an den Weg- und Straßenkreuzungen, den Compitalien, sich befindenden Larenschreine werden in der Archäologie nicht als Lararien bezeichnet.''
