Ahogy nézegettem a MO diszkográfiákat unalmas időmben:), kiderült, hogy lemaradtunk egy újabb évfordulóról: 1980. október 31-én (azaz pont húsz évvel ezelőtt) jelent meg a QE2 nagylemez!

ha itten valami forditos-buli van, csak futtyentsetek, hogy mi kell, es en forditok, mint az a bizonyos szarnyas lenay (kisangyal).
Es még (jé, itt vannak ékezetek) egyszer hadd kérjelek titeket, hogy szoljatok, mikor és hol lesz, mert itt sokan sok időpontban akarnak talizni, és én nem fogok tudni róla. Másrészt meg kis szerencsével lehet, hogy vinni fogok magammal egy igazi kegytárgyat (egy dedikált CD-t !!!, bár ez attól függ, hogy a tulaja odaadja-e).
Magam részéről azért nem válaszoltam talikérdésedre, mert egyszerűen nem tudom rá a választ és nem akartam egy hozzászólást elpazarolni, hogy ezt a tényt tudassam a világgal.
A White Wateres megfejtésedet annyira nem értem, amennyire ez csak lehetséges. Ok, van az Incantations album, a II. rész végén a Longfellow-s Hiawatha's Departure és a IV. rész végén a Ben Johnson féle Ode to Cynthia. De hogy jön mindehhez a White Paper?????
Próbáltam utána nézni én is diszkográfiákban a waternek és érdekes dolgokat láttam, de megtalálni nem találtam meg. Nem számítva, ha mégis lenne összefüggés szati ötlete és a White Paper között, nem lehet, hogy a srác értett félre valamit? Vagy pedig el kéne kérni tőle a felvételt! :o))
Nos, pontosítanám az elôzô hozzászólásom (miután nem hagyott nyugodni a dolog, utánanéztem a tubular.net-en): Jó helyen kapiskáltam, de nem az Incantations 4. részérôl, hanem mégis a 2. részérôl, annak is a befejezô szakaszáról van szó. Ez még Longfellow szövege (Hiawatha), ellenben a 4. részben elhangzó szöveget Ben Jonson írta és "Ode To Cynthia" a címe.
Közben észrevettem és meglepôdtem azon, hogy a fenti dallamokat Maddy Prior énekli. Én valamiért mindig azt hittem, hogy itt Sally Oldfield énekel. Errôl a bizonyos Maddy Priorról tudtok valami bôvebbet?
Szomorúan állapítottam meg, hogy az én korábbi találós kérdésemre (996-os hozzászólás) egyetlen helyes válasz sem érkezett. (Igaz, helytelen se!)
Lehetséges értelmezések:
1. Túl nehéz volt a kérdés (gondolatolvasásra nem vállalkoztok)
2. Túl könnyű volt a kérdés (minek irkáljatok trivialitásokról)
3. A kutyát sem érdekelte a dolog (menjek a fenébe az ilyen hülyeségekkel, nem játszótér ez)

Bár most nem tudom ellenôrizni (mivel én és a CD-im pillanatnyilag nem tartózkodunk egyazon épületben), de eléggé biztos vagyok benne, hogy a "The Son of the Evening" címmel ellátott szöveg egyik kedvenc lemezem, az Incantations 4. részébôl való, ahol visszatér a 2. rész Hiawatha témája kissé lassított változatban. Remélem, nem tévedek!
Egy srác feltette ide az mp3-as listáját. Köztük két Mike Oldfield nóta szerepelt. Az egyik a "Moonlight Shadow" (ismerem!:), a másik címe: White Water. Na őróla nem hallottam... És ti?
Találóskérdés következik, amire én sem tudom a választ!
Valaki, aki szintén MO rajongó (is) lehet, feltett néhány Oldfield-szöveget a világhálóra ebbe a könyvtárba. Nos, ezek közül egyetlenegy nótaszöveg számomra teljesen ismeretlen volt. Mégpedig ez. Szerintetek mi ez? Honnan van? Szegényes Oldfield-tudásomnak köszönhetően nem tudok erről vagy mi?
Megpróbálkozom a SHINE szövegének lefordításával is. Lehet, hogy gyarló fordítási
kísérleteimet külön topicba kéne eldugni kultúremberek szeme elöl? :o) "Mindösszesen"
csak a költészethez, az angolhoz és a fordításhoz vagyok teljesen TÖK, mintha én
lennék erre a fordításra a legalkalmatlanabb ember a világon /és ebben nincs semmi
(ál)szerénység csak tény/. Sajnos ez a szöveg összehasonlíthatatlanul nehezebb nekem,
mint az Innocenté. Soha nem láttam és elképzelni sem tudok I'M PUT és HE'D DANCE
szerkezeteket, ezt hozzáértőknek kell pontosítaniuk. Gondolkodtam, hogy nem elég-e
a lényeges sorokat közreadni csak helykímélés céljából, de aztán azt gondoltam hogy jönnék
én ahhoz, hogy egy Mike Oldfield vagy egy Vissai szövegét megcsonkítsam, így az eredetit
követem. :o)) Egyébként a fordításom "használati utasításáért" mindenki forduljon a 999-ik

Jó nagy fába vágom a fejszém: mivel úgy veszem észre LoviGabi igen csak szereti
a Mike Oldfield szövegeket magyarul is olvasni (FATC, Shine), megpróbálkoznék
egynek a fordításával. Mivel ugatom csak az angolt, ezért mindenkit kérek legyen
kíméletes velem és fordítási hibáimmal szemben. Ne forduljon elő az, ami Siskával
egyszer előfordult még az Internettós időkben, hogy szintén LoviGabi kérésére
jóindulatúan a legjobb tudása szerint megpróbált lefordítani egy nehéz bekezdést,
és egy angol szakos ELTE-s neki esett ('aki nem tud arabusul'). És aki - lehet ettől
függetlenül - de teljesen eltűnt a topicból, pedig rengetegszer próbáltam vele
felvenni a kapcsolatot. Bőven elég, ha tárgyilagosan feltárja a hibákat valaki,
én ezt el fogom fogadni, és ha túl sokat hibázok, nem fogom eröltetni a dolgot.
Nem nyers fordítást adok, hanem hogy szerintem mit akart kifejezni a szöveg,

some of the tracks recorded for
Reflection in 1976/7 appeared
very much later - including
Woodhenge and The Path (in
1986!) I have also heard that both
Incantations and Voyager as they
appeared in their final form - were
very different to the original
recordings.
Very little of the material
described here is available in any
form - so please do not ask for
copies! Unlike many other artists,
Mike’s working style means that
this kind of material could stay
safely locked up in his vaults!
Much of the information has been
gleaned from various discussions
and interviews with Mike, Tom
Newman, Bridget St. John and
Barry Palmer over the years.
I hope that when the time comes
to produce a rarities compilation,
the compilers will consider some
of the tracks that have been
included here, although I fear that
many masters will have disap-peared
long ago.
‘Orrible Orange
1971/2
A Kevin Ayers track that has not
officially seen the light of day.
Mike has a whole verse all to
himself.
Tubular Bells,
1972/3
Unreleased segments from the
original demo tape, including the
“Hoover” piece. This recording
still exists in Mike’s archives.
This section was finally used on
Amarok, albeit in a re-recorded
form. The known “Hoover”
section (16:11) is a remake.
Spanish Tune,
1974
Unreleased track from the Hergest
Ridge sessions. Reputedly
released as 2 sided promotional 7"
single in 1974 complete with an
extract from Hergest Ridge Part 2
on the B side. This has not been
confirmed to exist either as a
single in this form or as a track
with this name. However, a 1
sided white label test pressing
which contains an extract from
Hergest Ridge Part 2 does exist.
Ask Me No
Questions, 1975
A track originally recorded by
Bridget St. John, which was a
favourite of Mike’s. The new
version was taped during the
Ommadawn sessions, with Mike
playing all the instruments
accompanied by Bridget on
vocals.
Reflection, 1977
Reflection was a documentary
commissioned by the UK Arts
Council in 1976, and is essen-
tially about sacred geometry, and
form in nature and man-made
features including stone circles,
mazes etc. Mike was actually
comissioned to write music for
the TV film which was produced
by Keith Critchlow with
Lawrence Moore.
The soundtrack contains some
very unique out-takes/re-workings
of pieces from Hergest Ridge,
Ommadawn and Incantations, The
Path!! (later released as the B side
to Shine in 1980’s), Woodhenge
(later released as a B side to Blue
Peter, and of course on Platinum)
and some short linking sections
and tracks. The latter all remain
unreleased and include a track
played over the Chartres Maze
sequence which includes Alan
Hacker a clarinettist, horn and sax
player with Sally Oldfield and
Alan’s daughter Katy providing
vocals, and a track called Making
Way which is played at the end of
the programme.
The film is available as a VHS
video cassette from Concorde

Sit You Down
1977
A track written by a friend of Phil
Beer’s (one of the guitarists on the
Exposed tour), Steve Knightley,
which was recorded by Mike at
the same time as Passed You By -which
later appeared on the
“Where would you rather be
Tonight” LP.
Ad lib track
This track was recorded during
Tour Rehearsals in January 1979.
It has not been officially released.
Untitled
A short, circa 1 minute, very early
version of an up-tempo reworking
of Tubular Bells. It is believed to
be the early beginnings of a
dance-based track in the style of
Guilty, but based around the
Tubular Bells theme, and is
understood to be from the
Platinum album sessions.
Alright Now
Mike recorded (at his studio) the
well-known Free song for a UK
Tyne Tees TV called the Tube,
which was presented by Paula
Yates and Jools Holland. It is
rumoured that Virgin were
contemplating the release of this
track over Blue Peter, although
this seems unlikely given the
former’s association with a
charity appeal and the re-recording
of the theme tune to the
Blue Peter UK television
programme. A dark blue vinyl
flexi disc of the recording,
featuring Wendy Roberts on
vocals, with the catalogue number
of TT 362 exists in very small
quantities. Contrary to popular
opinion, it was not released or
pressed by the UK Flexipop
magazine.
Orchestral
Hergest Ridge
There have been a number of
orchestral recordings of Hergest
Ridge, none of which have
officially seen the light of day.
Extracts used for the Space Movie
video soundtrack were taken from
a performance which did not
feature Mike on guitar - one
reason why it is suggested that
this version was not given a full
release. There are a handful of
copies of the soundtrack from
Tony Palmer’s film available as a
white label test pressing. This LP
was cancelled before release.
Incantations
outtake. The Space Movie
soundtrack also yields a further
gem - a section of an Incantations
outtake. This extract uses the
section of music that appears
before the Song of Diana (i.e. the
section between the marimbas /
glockenspiels and the Diana
finale). On the soundtrack this
section has words sung to it,
which are hard to make out, as is
the identity of the vocalist. The
vocals, which do not appear on
the issued LP, go something like:

And in the fire there is a storm

Polka with
Radetzky March
The B-side to the Arrival single
was recorded during the tour of
Europe in 1980. At the concert in
Vienna at the Stadthalle on 28th
of April 1980 - Polka was segued
with the Radetzky March.
Blue Peter Theme
Mike was commissioned by the
BBC to re-record the theme tune
for this popular English children’s
TV program. The recording of the
track as broadcast on Blue Peter
was never released. A remixed
single was released for charity. A
snippet of the television version is

Silent Night
Originally performed at Dort-mund,
Westfalen Halle, 20th
December 1980 with Maggie
Reilly on vocals, and then
released in a studio form on the
UK releases of Tattoo from
Tubular Bells II album.
Blaydon Races
A short extract of a piece of music
associated with Newcastle-upon-Tyne
in the North East of
England, played at the Newcastle
City Hall on 22nd of May 1981.
Wedding Anthem
Perhaps one of the most well
known pieces of Mike’s
unreleased music, due largely to
its association with the marriage
of Prince Charles and Lady
Diana. This is a standalone track
that has only ever been played at
the free concert given by Mike on
28th July 1981 at London’s
Guildhall Yard. Very short extracts
were broadcast on English TV.
Mike was awarded the “Freeman
of the City of London” award for
this, which entitles him, amongst
other things, to herd his sheep
across London Bridge whenever
he pleases!
Blue Danube
This famous Austrian piece was
played, albeit briefly, at the
Vienna Stadthalle on 20th July
1981. I also believe that this was
played in 1984’s Discovery Tour.
Nellie the Elephant
A lighthearted stab at this
children’s song. It was sung by
Maggie Reilly on the 1981
German tour.
O Sole Mio
O Sole Mio was performed at
Livorno, on 10th July 1981
running on from Punkadiddle.
Pastosi
Performed by Mike assisted with
Diego Cortes. This was reportedly
broadcast on Spanish TV on 9th
July 1981. This has at various
times been mistaken for the
infamous Spanish Tune track.
Fanny Planxty
Power
Duet with Paddy Moloney on
broadcast on German TV in 1982.
Ready Mix
This track was recorded with Carl
Palmer, probably at the same time
as Mount Teide.
In High Places/
Etude
The original version of In High
Places was quite different from
the version released on Crises. To
start with the track was an
instrumental, and certainly at the
Hammersmith Odeon perform-ance
in 1982 was introduced by
Mike as a “song about little
people”. It was segued together
with an early version of Etude.
Crises
Interviews with Mike at the time
of the Crises issue stated that
there were a number of recorded,
but unused sections for main
Crises track. This appeared in the
NME I believe.
Midnight Passion
The original version of Moonlight
Shadow was sung by Hazel
O’Connor, and was entitled
Midnight Passion. Discussed by
Mike in an interview with Record
Mirror, July 1983.
Killing Fields
unreleased soundtrack excerpts.
The writing of the music for the
soundtrack was cited by Mike
himself as a very tortuous
process; particularly as the
sequencing of the music with the
images was something that Mike
expended a lot of time and trouble
on. He is known to have been
unhappy with the editing of the

film, which was changed without
consultation and affected the
sequencing of the music with the
images. There is a small amount
of additional music on the video
release - in particular the
sequence known as the “Dark
Room” - which features just over
a minute of music exclusive to the
video / film. According to Sean
Moraghan’s book, Mike recorded
over 4 1/2 hours of material.
Discovery sessions
unreleased tracks. The inner
sleeve notes from the album
reproduce some notes written by
Simon Philips during the
recording sessions (these are best
viewed on the vinyl edition). The
notes list tracks (in order)
including Poison Arrows, To
France, Saved by T’ Bell,
T’ Snow or The
Sword, In the Pool, Tricks of the
Light, Thing
(possibly Celtic Thing - this later
became Afghan), Heart. On another photo, Poison
Arrows, China, Tricks of the
Light and In the Pool. This could
suggest at least 4 tracks that have
not yet seen the light of day.
Freude Schoener
Goetterfunken
Performed at Frankfurt, 27th of
September 1984.
Le Marseillaise
At a concert in France towards the
end of the Discovery tour in 1984,
Mike added a rendition of the
French national anthem to the
encore of Shadow on the Wall.
In The Pool
Two vocal versions of this track,
sung by Barry Palmer and Maggie
Reilly did not appear because the
vocals did not fit the style.
Pictures i.t. Dark
There is a version of this track
with vocals by Barry Palmer as
well as the normal version.
Sutton Hoo
Mike was commissioned to write
the theme and incidental music
for a UK TV documentary about
archaeology. First aired in1985.
Magic Touch
Two versions of Magic Touch
were released i.e. vocals by Jim
Price and Max Bacon. However,
there is a third version with vocals
by John Pain of Asia. Apparently,
this version was intended for issue
right up until the release of
Islands, but Mike had a change of
heart at the last moment.
Man in the Rain
Track recorded during the Islands
sessions, with vocals by Barry
Palmer. Barry confirmed after
listening to Heaven’s Open that
Man in the Rain had metamor-phosed
into the track Heavens
Open. See Amarok Daily Digest
V97 #327 for further details.
“Other takes”
According to Barry Palmer “... the
day you are doing a song for
Mike you cannot be sure it will
come out on the record until you
see your name on it. I can say on
Islands - especially on Islands -that
he used many different
singers and recorded lots of
different versions” One of these
vocalists is Derek William Dick,
better known as Fish, formerly the
vocalist with Marillion.
Signature theme
for Mike Oldfield Productions.
The Wind Chimes features a short
instrumental TB theme piece .
Aubrey Theme
Aubrey was a children’s cartoon
featured on UK TV. Mike
apparently recorded the theme
tune.

Country
These four tracks were re-recorded
in a BBC recording
studio to be aired by Nicky
Campbell 23/8/89 on Radio One
in the UK. It is understood that all
the tracks were recorded with all
the instruments being played by
hand. This prompted the back to
basics approach in Amarok. There
are two versions of the Tubular
Bells track - one features John
Peel as the Master of Ceremonies,
the other is simply an instrumen-tal.
“Irish Air”
During the Amarok sessions,
Mike wrote a short Irish Air, in
Gaelic, which was sung by
Bridget St John. According to
Bridget it was a very beautiful
piece.
“Tomorrow’s
World Theme”
Mike submitted a new theme for
the English TV program
Tomorrows World, which was a
reworking of a track culled from
The Songs of Distant Earth. Only
2 of the 4 producers of the show
wanted to use the track, which
was never used.
